I'm a digital artist, and this helped me boost my confidence to start painting my pieces instead of leaving them with flat color. Thanks.
🙏🏼 HOW REFRESHING that you answer the question in the VERY FIRST SENTENCE! Appreciation for that fact alone-that you got straight to the point and didn’t do the usual infuriating tease (which makes me instantly click away)-influenced me to watch the whole video. And it didn’t disappoint. Thank you thank you thank you. Subscribed ✅

Hey, can you do a video on the proper storage, clean up and disposal of oil paints, thinners and mediums? Would be very helpful.
@lb10003

And how do you dispose of rags/paper towels soaked with linseed oil?
@1hunnybadger
Жыл бұрын
@lb10003 I place my used linseed rags in an old metal, air tight paint can. My solvent rags go in a separate air tight metal can. I use non cotton painters rags for both. I let them dry out in the cans, then drop them off at the hazardous waste area at the dump as if they were paint or old deck stain.

@@lb10003 am pretty certain there is a place in the community somewhere that has a combustible disposal center? I know auto-zone has vats you can get rid of your oil there. I take mine to a friend with a shop but I bought a reciprocal that is red and has a foot pedal it is an actual industrial shop container for the disposal of combustible items. You can get one on Amazon . Then I heard Some people soak them in a bucket of water until they dispose of them I guess that’s the safe thing to do? . For the left over paint I just went and got an unused paint can’t and with any globs I put it in there and reseal it ( in hopes 😂to make black or even a grey at another time) Not tying to take over anyone’s post just trying to help and share what’s seems to work for me.
I'm so grateful that you go over the basics so thoroughly
This came up in my suggested videos tonight; I've just binged about 5 others. I graduated best portfolio with a Bachelor's degree in Illustration in 2008, have worked as a free-lance artist and concept artist for over 13 years in the video game industry. I've had wonderful painting teachers. Have produced some technically well-executed oil paintings while in college. But since graduating I haven't picked up a paintbrush; I feel like I'm stuck. A blank canvas gives me anxiety. Conforming/appeasing professors in order to pass a class stripped all the creativity out of art for me. Comparing my work to other artists. Thinking every work I produce has to be a marketable, finished piece. Doubting my abilities when something didn't turn out exactly as I'd envisioned it. It all paralyzed me artistically for years. But after watching these videos where he explains the process in such an effortlessly tangible way...painting suddenly seems comfortable again. I just bought some oil paint and a canvas pad. I can't even express how grateful I am to this amazing person who's inspiring so many people

Loved this story. I’ve been stuck too for a few Covid years. The world went so downhill that I lost all enthusiasm for painting as it seemed so trivial suddenly. Hoping to get some joy back and start up again

Thank you for doing what you do. Your helpful, direct, easy-to-digest videos are like a tonic for us artists who just need a little guidance now and then.
Thank you for creating this awesome video and sharing the unique inner experience that we express through art. It is truly amazing to witness how you work on yourself and develop. You are doing great, and keep creating and sharing so we can all help each other uplift our artistic spirit.
I'm new to oil painting and am so glad I found your channel! I really appreciate all you share. I'm definitely too detail oriented when I paint and need to learn to block forms. I'm going to check out your courses.
My goodness!!! What a fantastic gorgeous peaces of advices that you crumbled and packed beautifully in a so short video! You are incredible!!! I will see this video numerous times again and again! So worth it!!! I am feeling really inspired and you helped a tone with your expertise and advices. Congratulations!!! I’m so grateful! Sending you much love! ❤
This teaching video is a life saver. I struggled a lot with painting portraits ! I will implement this 🎉
Your advice is always so clear and your demonstrations reinforce your advice so well, it makes your videos a pleasure to watch - and I know I'm going to learn something. Thanks for all the great lessons
Chris thanks for this video! Your a constant voice in my head on this learning journey.😊
This is the best art lesson. I never learned this while getting a minor in art and will start to apply this method immediately.
Thank you for your videos, they help me think differently about how to start a painting,.Blocking the shapes and working from there builds up my paintings now. 🖼
Thank you. I would never have thought of it this way on my own. I'm going to try it on my work.
Thanks Chris, This is one of the best tutorials I've ever watched. My problem has always been that I get lost in detail, right from the start. In the end everything looked flat and round. This tutorial really helps me be more strategic with my paintings. I have to admit I admire the old style advertising paintings because of the exact fact that they have this blocky appeal. A great example is the Erik Henningsen advertising for Tuborg beer.
I have dabbled in sculpture before and looking at painting from this angle is extremely helpful. Thank you.
Love this video. Brilliant, crucial and solid tuition (as always). Thanks so much.
You are such a gifted art instructor and artist!
I learned this a year ago for sketching and I improved enormously. Time to try painting.
Dude! I love your way of explaining and thinking about it, breaking it down. ❤❤❤
This is one of the MOST important tools I've learned. Not only does it improve your use of light and shadow but it often gets me past that paralyzed stage at the start of some projects where you sometimes just don't know where to begin. It helps you turn that mental image into something you can work with. Definitely subscribing and following this channel.
just a hobby for me - but i learned so much here! thanks! really cool that I was using my eyes my whole life - and now I'm learning new ways to use them! so cool!
well thought out and narrated. very helpful.
This way of thinking is incredibly helpful; I can’t wait to try it. I often get bogged down in the microcosm of detail when I should pull back and get the macrocosm squared away. Thank you.
Amazing tutorial. Very indepth and straight to the point. Thank your for investing your time in doing this.
I just happened across this video and decided to try the technique on a landscape painting I am working on. It is a picture of a river with lots of river rocks. The rocks were looking way to smooth and unrealistic. This technique totally transformed my painting and fixed the problem. I will definitely be using it from now on! Thank you so much!
Thank you! Very helpful, I’m one of those painters that gets lost painting flowers. Going to give this technique a try!
Extremely helpful. My art teacher pointed me to your video and I am grateful.
Your videos are so instructive and your points are so enhanced perfectly using the images showing the shapes you block out. The clay fruit are a brilliamt tool! So glad I found your videos! 😊❤
Hadn’t seen a video in a week or two. I was worried about you. Glad to see you post.
I always press the like button because you teach so generously.
Your so inspiring! Your art work is improving sooo much! It brought tears to my eyes! So happy for you. Your a great teacher too but real and generous of heart! Thank you.
I enjoyed your demonstrating and ways in painting. I find it so relaxing and therapeutic. Thanks for your expertise ❤️🩹👍
Agree 100%! I paint loose bold pet portraits, and I definitely use, and always have used this technique in a different way, I actually squint, and blur the reference to capture shapes rather than getting caught up in a nose or eye or detail. Thanks you for this awesome way to describe this way of painting!

I am getting better at animals and they are what I really want to paint, but I reeeeally struggle when the animal is multiple colours like black and white or brown with white patches, I can't seem to get the light and shade right, any tips?
You have helped me more than any other youtube instruction on my initial approach to simplifying how to proceed on my mental painting start up. .
i've known about this technique for years but i've always ignored it because i get my stuff done anyways but now i wanted to try it for real and your vid was the perfect first hit and got me the info i needed. thx. keep painting.
Something that helps me a ton with this (which you demonstrated when showing the blurry flower reference image) is unfocusing my eyes when looking at a subject and painting the blocky, blobby shapes. I used to fixate on really small details to the point I’d have a really small detailed section with essentially nothing else around it, which overwhelmed me to the point of quitting pieces. Learning to paint the basic shapes of everything first was awesome and I actually started getting paintings done because of it!

Glad u finally understand how to paint better...all is basically shapes and layers. Just keep trusting the process. At least that's what I keep telling myself when I start to freak out lol
Wow! I just learned a lot more about writing than I ever have before. I mean, not how to do it, but how to do it better. I understand plot points and lines now. It's the same thing. Find the big structure. For that you need the light and dark (reasons, motivations, tempers) and then you start chipping away at the blockiness by adding in detail. Lovely!
Holy crap this completely changed the way my brain is looking at the things around me, that's wild! First of all thank you for jumping right into the explanation lol, and second thank you so much for sharing this tip!!!
One of your very best videos! And I've seen them all. Thank you!!!!
wow you're not only an amazing painter but also teacher!
you are my favorite art teacher!! i am nearly entirely self-taught (took drawing/painting throughout high school but that's about it for traditional art) and your tips are so helpful and you're very concise when you provide direction! i had stopped painting for some time but i've been getting back into it and watching your videos has given me new inspiration and useful tools to continue to improve. thank you for your videos!! (won't be long until i'm on your patreon i'm sure!)
Currently busy with a new painting and I am so going to try this. Thanks
Thank you for that advice. That makes sense. Can’t wait to try it.
Perfectly explained! Makes so much sense and allows me to focus on the overall shape and light, without getting overwhelmed with details when I am starting a piece. Thank you!
Makes sense to look at it this way that I can't believe it hasn't occure to all of us. TY The portrait made me think of paint by numbers.
Wow this is gold! This will improve my digital and conventional art ten folds.
I did the exact same thing: carving blocks of wood into fruit shapes and painting them so students could see the value changes as the sides moved away from the light source. I also taught this technique in life drawing. Very effective! Nice job.
This is so paradigm shifting, one has to ask why it isn't talked about in most beginner tutorials. I had to subscribe and comment. I behove you to do a whole series on these sorts of "actually clever yet easy" tricks to improve your paintings, please. Good day to you.
This is awesome! Thank you. I’m going to explore and experiment with this.
I really appreciate that you gave the answer within the first 6 seconds. Thank you.
Still in the first 5 years of painting and I found this extremely helpful. I appreciate the lesson and hope to get some weight to things.
Thanks for not making us wait until the middle or the end to getting right to the point of the title. A+ !!
I love your teaching techniques. Thank you
I am so grateful!!! I needed you right now😭😭😭 God bless you🙏 I have a better understanding. Not only that, you brought back memories from my grid paper portrait assignment to paint face in performing arts high school.
Truly this is an amazing breakthrough especially for the novice artist like myself.
thank you for answering your own question in the first thirty seconds! it actually made me want to keep watching much more than if id been skipping around to find where you get to the point.
my mind was blown by the end of this video. Seriously greatly appreciated
Wow. Just wow. Painting has been seeming quite intimidating to me, but this video really clicked with me and makes me excited to begin!!! I’ve watched yours and others’ videos for over a year now, but this makes me feel ready to get started!!! Now it doesn’t feel so intimidating!! Thank you!
Pretty wise for a young feller 😀 i appreciate your videos and sharing your knowledge, a natural teacher
Maybe the first time someone promising the "one thing" and it actually helped! Very helpful indeed!
Coming across this video made my ENTIRE DAY. I have plateaued and lost some motivation with painting, I have been thinking the only way to improve is to sign up for a long/expensive art program, but the algorithm did me a huge favour today in recommending this video. Thank you. Can't wait to follow along and sing up for some of your courses too.
I love every second of this 9.19 min. video. Thank you "Coach".
Brilliant! Very smart about using fewer brushstrokes and how it looks better because it shows confidence. ...Always wondered what I wasn't doing quite right with painting! -New subscriber!
As someone who has challenged themselves to learn to paint a bit to be a bit more creative this was the best advice I’ve seen on KZread and you gave the main advice instantly. Thank you.
You have a gift for teaching-you’re awesome man!!! Thanks!
Furthermore, I love your style and paintings.
This is such a helpful video and not a concept Ive really seen explained before.
This is so incredibly helpful! I’ve been painting for years and am just starting to sell my art.. all these videos on KZread seem to say the same things that I’ve already tried and I feel like this is what I’ve been missing! Thank you!
This was so helpful. New subscriber as a result. Not sure I'm ready to give up my acrylics, but I'm thinking about it.
Came across your video tonight and really enjoyed it. So much great info in a short time. I subscribed so I'll be back often. Beautiful work! 👍
Shortly after the barn pic popped up (@4:00) and the blocky shapes are placed over the tree, almost instantly everything else around appeared as flat and blocky too... patches in the mountain, the barn, the field, the yellow tractor. Some switch turned on in my brain... Thank you Chris!!!
Great video! Couldn’t help but notice the Wawa cup 😅 There was a Wawa on every corner when we lived in Midlothian, VA none of that down here in NOLA
I'm so glad I found this channel. I tried working with acrylics and they r just not for me, I am a beginner at oil painting and you help me so much. Thank you!
Thank you so much! Got my art exam tmr helped a lot
Cool video! When I first started drawing, I was instructed to feel the reality of the subject. The goal being that reality is absolutely obtainable. It's not. I've since learned, it's much better to see behind the reality and see the illusion you're making.

Heard one good instructor say, "If you want perfect realism, consider getting into photography instead. You're painters."
anyone else kinda just mesmerized by the mixing of colors on his palette? I like watching the colors start as dabs, than gradually over time blended, and merging into each other :)
The most excellent tutorial and so succinctly narrated. I have waited A WHOLE LIFETIME to pick up this technique. Prior to this I used the shape within the shape to work across the top to th bottom, For the outline I turned the picture upsidedown and pretended to be a small boat traversing slowly around the edge of a shore, stopping to change tack at directional drifts. The method of yours is an eye opener. Thanks for the very valuable tip. Rosie Hoy New Zealand
Thanks so much for this video..Very helpful indeed!..especially for new painters like me..
My dude... I needed this video. Thank you.
omg finally someone actually teaching how to approach painting with colours. i couldn't figure it out. also idk why I'm scared of sharpness. I like my art cute and round. but yes I understand now sculpt then smooth. thank you. I'm going to continue using your approach

This has helped me so much. Excellent tips and instruction.
Thank you so much! I really needed this demo.
Great straight forward & into it vid 👌🏼. Cheers
Thank you! Its so useful. I reached a plateau in my painting. Although most were “pretty good”, I couldn’t get better. Took classes, expensive workshops from great local artists, flew to a art workshop in Italy and read a few more books. Very little improvement from being pretty good, even selling some, to where I longed to be! I couldn’t stand it anymore. I’d start a painting and within a half hour, just didn’t care. I stopped, got depressed and hadn’t picked up a brush for at least five years. I told my friends, sure, I can paint, but I just can’t SEE! I can’t do this anymore. Discouraged, I walked away from painting. THIS IS WHAT I NEEDED! I feel like I can finally see again! OMG I feel like I can see objects in a new way. THANK YOU. Thank you! I’ll watch everything you post on KZread. If you teach, I’d love to come for some classes etc. Oh! Did I say, THANKS!

I'm a self-taught painter as well. This very helped me out a lot!
Great instructions thanks PC, your film got me thinking thanks. I much prefer a painting over a photo but once upon a time, working at different film studio's, making features and commercials, I met some fantastic animator artists, European, African, Canadian and American, who all did such fabulous work and who were all so different as a humble inbetweener artist, I was never going to be as good as them. But if you work every day you will improve that's for sure, you just need to practice and draw/paint what you see, not what you think you can see. My world changed for the better when a friend told me about a Disney job in Camden, London. Went along, passed the drawing test and got a job working as an inbetweener for Disney in 1986, we were expected to do 8 to 10 drawings a day (animators were paid a footage rate) whereas with commercials you had to do a minimum of 40 a day. One thing that will definitely help any artist is to drawing a live model, even the big gun animators would go along to these 1 or 2 hour stints because, PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT, and everybody can improve and this is as true today as it ever was, all artists copy from other artists, it's how we develop. So start drawing friends and family. I left the business and all my contacts in about 2002 when everything went digital, it was a nightmare time with very little freelance work, even Disney was dumping so many artists, it was such a waste. I could have stayed on but it was a cut-throat business with lots of shallow, selfish people and after spending a year learning about CGI, I didn't want to do CGI, it was time to move on, yet with digital, we have such amazing films, games and porn, digital has changed the world and now AI can do it better than us, and much, much quicker. It's now so hard to tell what is real and what is fake, the available zillion colour pallets are fantastic but it's all too much choice and we can spend half a day in meetings about hair colour or what sounds to use, it's all a big distraction and nothing gets done. . These days I'm a lime plasterer (not drywall) and work in sustainable buildings doing pargetting (designs in mortar) work on peoples homes which adds a bit more value to them and can look so awesome, my drawings are just for fun and birthdays. Thanks for reading this, have a great 2023, all the best from England.
Nicely done. I think it’s really important to learn how to see. I’ve come to think that to much construction makes a drawing or painting look dead. Also trying to work back from the not real to the real to me, I now believe encourages lazy seeing. But all that said, I think what you said here is solid and helpful.
Very useful, this will help me in painting portraits. Subscribed.
Great advice. I am always fussing the details and need to literally step back, hold the brush near its end and makes bigger strokes and block forms and values.
