The Mind of Watercolor

The Mind of Watercolor

Hello, my name is Steve Mitchell. Welcome to the Mind of Watercolor. I have been a professional designer and illustrator for 30+ years but on this channel I've returned to my fine art roots. This channel is for watercolor and mixed media enthusiasts. I share tips and techniques in a quick, easy to digest fashion. I'll also do product reviews, offer challenges, look at other great artists' work and perhaps even have a few giveaways. Take a break with me and step into the Mind of Watercolor.

    So many cool things going on for you! Your studio is awesome and seems like a great creative space. Congratulations to your daughter for her book - with an awesome illustration - and for her nursing degree! 💐 That is no small feat and we desperately need good people in healthcare. Looking forward to a video about your experience at PACE. Thanks for being such an inspiration 😘

    What a wonderful new room Steve! Fellow Sci-Fi / Fantasy fan. I too saw Star Wars in the theatre in '77 with my future hubby when I was just 16. It was life changing for me as I went on to sculpt and paint custom figures, create dioramas in my collection room and because of that was hired to work for an online Star Wars fan site. That led to my working and presenting at Star Wars Celebrations, meeting many of the actors (including Carrie Fisher), Lucasfilm staff and visiting Skywalker Ranch. If you ever want to see a bit of my geekdom, I have a Star Wars tour video on my KZread channel. Thanks for sharing Steve - always been a fan of your awesome art.

    I am from Montana but got to sit up on the huge branch of an oak in Georgia. It had its own garden growing on it's branches, I will never forget them, I fell in love. Also loved this technique, it glowed.

    If you had to choose Princeton Mottler or Sterling Edwards Glazing/Blender? Or both?

  • @mindofwatercolor
    @mindofwatercolor3 күн бұрын

    They are very different. The mottled is a better wash painting brush but won’t blend tike the Edward’s brush which is much stiffer. Both will apply water well.

    You and I have the same studio décor! I’m envious of Darth Tater and Spider Spud😂 My figurines include Padmé, Mr. Fantastic, and Mike, Sully & Boo from Monsters, Inc. Im also surrounded by comic art and greatly enamored of their styles. Congrats to your daughter! I’ll look for the book-how exciting! Your son-in-law’s Mandeloroan is fantastic, too. Your artwork is inspirational, Steve. Thank you for this tour. I am also in the process of a studio re-do. It’s a labor of love, that’s for certain. I enjoy your stories-we are both at the same phase in life and I, too, remember the wonder of seeing the original Star Wars in ‘77. At the moment Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker fought with light sabers, the audience was enraptured with the amazing technology on film before us. We had never seen anything like it at all-special effects like that just didn’t exist. At that moment, the film burned (another phenomenon younger generations may never have experienced) and the entire audience gasped! Then just as suddenly, we all collectively sighed, realizing the firey effects weren’t the work of George Lucas, but merely an overheating projector😂. PACE looked amazing-I’m hoping to attend the next one 🤞🏼 Thanks again!

    Hello again Steve! Love the new studio! Your memorabilia shelves must have been very satisfying to put together. Its nice to meet a fellow geek pop culture fan. I also am a huge fan of all those things....Tron, LOTR, SW, Dune. Do you like any of the Miyazaki films? They are great inspiration for paintings. You also look like you enjoy reading......if you are looking for a book recommendation, I am currently reading the Senlin Ascends books by Josiah Bancroft. Kinda of steampunky with fantasy elements. Im not really a steampunk person but I am loving this story. The writing style is exceptional. As always, thanks for your videos, they've been a tremendous help with my painting skills. Cheers, Justin

    I purchased one of these stretchers over a year ago. I havent used it yet. I definately need to give it a go. I teach watercolor and I usually have 2 different types of students - the open learner and the idealist/perfectionist. Even if they've had zero experience with art, the idealist expects the outcome that they set forth in thier mind and have difficulty letting go of it. It usually leads to self judgment in thier abilities and frankly can have a negative atmosphere within the group. Watercolor has a way of teaching those students, whose boss, if you will. Evenually they begin to let go and respect what watercolor wants to be vs what they want to force it to be. Thanks for the inspiration

    Thank you for sharing frustrations, sense of getting it wrong, and pushing through anyway. Great lesson. And when watercolor is totally dry, if I don’t want to throw away the work, I can gesso over the whole thing and create a new painting. Which amazes me frankly. Yay for gesso.

    Another thank you. Started using Silver Brush Black Velvets and like them a lot. In the video about caring for and cleaning brushes, you had as an option for shaping/reshaping a CVS hair product. I realized I had this big tube of stuff for holding hair that I never use, a gel. I tried it on a few of my older brushes. Works great. Brilliant tip. The videos I’m watching may be six and seven years old - going through them all in order - but the information does get old.
