This early 60s bit of music history, restored via ai music magic, comes to you crisp and dry from Freddy and The Shore Trotters. Originally a cover band, Freddy eventually steered the band toward a genre he called "observational surf." "If he was anything, he was honest," Chet Trotter said of his late bandmate’s lyrical style. "I think reliving that every night took a toll on him. After we came back from the tour, he spent a good year in his room alone before our next album. We got worried because after that whole thing at the beach he was deathly afraid of water. Sometimes we had to remind him to drink. So what the hell was he drinking in his room?"
It would take until their 1966 album - Engine Sounds - for Freddy to feel comfortable enough to recount the tragic events that followed "I Can't F**king Swim."

Fun fact: There used to be a 4th member of the band that drowned during the recording of this album. That's why the remaining 3 look so sad on the cover

We studied This Exact phenomenon for my Masters Thesis, Freddy and The Shore Trotters as the example why its best to break up (if a band) or get divorced(if a couple and the child of the couple dies). Staying together results in reliving the trauma. Fun fact: Sadness is measurable and off the charts when in shared company of former mates/members of common traumatic experiences. Run! Do not look back!

The first thing I saw was "observational surf" and I'm already dying laughing. That alone is brilliant.
Every one I listen to is better thn the one before.
Ironically, not swimming was what kept Freddy's career afloat for a few more years. The follow up record, "I can fly from this fucking rooftop" was when Freddy's downfall truly began.

The Shore Brothers really peaked with the help of their genius songwriter Wyan Brilson, though some say they sold out under the leadership of their co-writer, Mike Hatred.
it's still hard to believe 47 people drowned in the making of that album cover. that's not the beach, either - that's the late Dirk (pictured left)'s swimming pool. what happened was Freddy insisted on trying to swim while frantically yelling "i can't fucking swim!" and the crew came in to rescue him, but Freddy was so scared he'd just dogpile them and use their bodies as rafts. eventually the bodies became so numerous it created a little island mass and Chet pushed it to the edge of the pool. Freddy is quoted as saying "erm, well that was awkward..." and called out for Dirk, but they both saw him at the bottom of the pool looking up at him showing his palm that read, "Not Penny's Boat". this is what that Pavement song is about, "the second drummer drowned!"
I remember when this came out. I was 15. I listened to alternative stations.

The last time I saw that expression on a face was this morning on my dog.
He needs to encounter the fairy godmother from the classic Public Information Film - "Learn to swim, young man - Learn. To. Swim!"
They split over multiple reasons 1. Billy left and took Red Cross Swim Classes! 2.Johnny left to go to Mountains of Montana to study Grizzlies,Sharks was just to scary to study. 3. Freddy never left the Beach, he can still be seen trotting the Beach with envy of All who left! He is an Old Dude now full of Rage and Bitterness
As a giy who cant fuckin' swim and thus gets passed on by all the hotties, this feels like a personal attack.

He was the only one that was a good surfer and one hell of a drummer. He was the wild one of the band.

Tragic tale with a great tune! Reminds me that I was once an excellent swimmer, the only sport that I ever excelled at... Then I became a total fat arsed mouth breather as a teenager and swore a solemn oath never to go shirtless in public ever again, sob!!!🤣
To be a downer lol But its eerie how this is so similiar to a situation that happened a couple years back in my town. Some kids just graduated high school and came to town to swim in the pits and quarries of yesteryear. Everyone was jumping off the rocks into the water, and a girl kept telling this guy to join in. The last words the boy ever hear were "youll regret it for the rest of your life if you dont jump." The kid couldnt swim. He jumped in, and never came back up. My uncle was one of the responding officers with diving gear to find the body.
