I Bought The First 5 Things TikTok Ads Recommended To Me

Check out our new merch here!! fiendishbehavior.com
HELLO FRIENDS!! Today, I return to the land of internet hauls and social media targeted recommendations - with a deep dive into the sponsored posts that appear on your TikTok "For You Page"! Previously, I have bought things recommended to me via targeted ads on Facebook, Instagram, KZread, and Snapchat - so when I finally relented and downloaded TikTok a few months ago -- I figured, we probably had to do a TikTok ad haul as well. So I spent a day scrolling on TikTok until I found 5 different targeted ads, purchased what they were advertising, and then put them to the test to try and figure out why TikTok might think I would like them, and whether or not they were any good. Which item was your favorite?? What ads do you get on TikTok?
Thanks to Kayley Melissa for helping me curl my hair!

Somehow, I feel the “ripped off” hair curler is the same machine as the “original” hair curler, but that company stamps their logo/get a better box to sell it at a higher price. It's a kind of common practice around, and both machines look so suspiciously similar.

I watched a channel that had vets rescuing homeless animals, and using the KZread money made to pay for their supplies/surgeries/etc. People liked the uncensored videos, because they were interested in becoming surgeons or veterinarians - it wasn't gratuitous, it was educational, and they had plenty of warnings. They had to move most of their content to Patreon behind a paywall, because KZread wouldn't let it be monetized anymore if it was shown.

Tiktok killed my startup. We were doing amazing with growing our audience and supporters and then tiktok downgraded my channel RIGHT before I launched my kickstarter to crowdfund in order to launch and now hardly anyone is seeing my videos and my kickstarter is going to fail probably. I know they did something intentional though bc they wouldn't respond to my inquiries about paid advertising spots, my comments answering our supporters are invisible to them (on my account it looks normal but I created another account and my comments can't be seen on that one or by anyone else I've asked) and I went from getting 10,000-200,000 views on my videos regularly to less than 1000 overnight basically. They literally killed my business.

Well, to be fair to the hair curler, it's not so much of a knock off, rather they're all the exact same and companies can pay to put their logo on it. After watching the tea one I started to think: I put turmeric in my tea, I could probably make it turn purple if I added baking soda... That probably wouldn't be a good idea though. (If you are wondering turmeric also reacts to bases and acids, but adding an acid just makes it turn brighter yellow, while a base turns it a soft purple. I know this because I once tried to get a turmeric stain out of clothing and the internet suggested lemon juice or baking soda, it did not work, but was a cool science experiment! RIP those shorts.)

They did get the small mystery box. I'd guess that the sellers try to calibrate the value of the items to just above "I got ripped off" level, while diversifying the contents as much as possible (to up the odds that at least one thing will be something the buyer will like). Hence, no chance of a tablet in the little box, possible chance for the larger ones. ...you're not wrong, I just got to overthinking.

@Pleoryo For reference, that bag is enough for 20 cups of tea, which puts it in the ballpark of right for nice teas and tisanes. H&S is pretty reputable as far as western sellers go, you can do a good bit better if you know what you want and order from a specialist, general sellers like H&S and Adagio tend to have a markup. For about that price I got about twice as much tea ordering a sampler from Mountain Stream Teas, but they only have taiwanese teas and nothing else.

tea blender here! can confirm those are actual butterfly pea flowers, and are typically on the pricer side of ingredients put in tea blends. its typically supposednto be added to a tea (green or herbal usually) as how you metioned, it doesnt smell great. my work pairs it with a blueberry green tea and it turns the tea into bluegreen anime looking water. its kinda just "ooo cool color" and "ooo acidity science" with the lemon juice turning it pink. its also used alot in alcoholic mixed drinks when they dont want to use that one blue alcohol, but want a blue colored drink.

tiktok ads seem a lot more random than any other social media i’ve been on, i kinda find it refreshing that instead of just targeting things specific to you that can make you feel a bit “watched” they must throw everything at you like tv ads

Fun fact that hair helps you hear! It wiggles around due to sound wave. As you get older it falls down and that’s what causes older people to not hear higher pitch sounds as well

The butterfly pea flower was meant to be added to your tea, it doesn't do anything except make the color change. The flower itself isn't the tea. If you ever want a real tea, Adagio Tea has "Bella Luna Blue" which has the same flower but also tea; it's very delicious!

I can’t believe they’re out here selling straight butterflies pea flowers as tea. And at that price…. Yes, it changes colors. Yes, it’s safe to consume. No, it’s not tea. Tea may just be “hot leaf water,” but some leaves are a lot more flavorful than others. Pea flowers are hardly flavorful

I think it's meant to be added to one of their tea blends to change the color. For example, they have a tea called "indigo punch" that includes these flowers to give it a purple color.

I used to sell this as a gimmick at a restaurant I worked at. It was the butterfly pea tea cooled down over ice and then we have a little glass of lemon juice and sugar syrup blended together, once dumped in it would change colors and it was basically making lemonade

What’s hilarious about the butterfly pea syrup is that at my work we have a cocktail that uses that as a simple syrup to make a “Ranch Water”. It turns purple with what we add!

That's actually my favorite tea company! There is a tea shop in Woodstock New York that got me hooked on that brand. Their Holiday Blend is next level, and White Earl Gray is so good. And all their baged tea comes in those nice silky bags feels very luxurious.

For anyone interested in the butterfly pea, 30$USD for that pack of butterfly tea is expensive honestly. I get it at the local asian market for a fraction of that price in CAD. Im sure there are better places to get it online Also, Mix it with lemonade instead of straight lemon juice. It tastes a lot better 🥰

I got some from Amazon a few years ago from a (apparently) family owned business. I think it was a similar quantity but I paid about $13CAD. And yes to the lemonade! The bubble tea shops and some Asian restaurants in my city that sell similar drinks will call them galaxy lemonade or tea.
