I Bought A Randall Knife! - The Classic Randall Knives Model 1

I have wanted a Randall Knife for a long time and I finally just bought one. I chose the knife that was on the cover of the first Randall Knives catalog, the Model 1 All-Purpose Fighting Knife. This is the knife that many US soldiers carried into battle during WWII so it seemed like a good choice. Randall Knives has had a multi year waiting list for orders for decades so I ordered mine from Gary Clinton at www.ClintonKnives.com and it only took about 5 months to get mine. It was worth the wait. Randall Knives are handmade in Orlando, Florida and are functional works of art.

Bought myself the same model, with a Micarta handle, in '85 when I graduated the Special Forces Q course. Ace pawn shop outside of Ft Bragg, they used to stock them. Maybe they still do. They 'bead-blasted' the blade for free to make the surface less shiny. It is a special thing. I've had other "fighting knives", Ka-bar's and Gerbers and various different bayonets, some issued and some traded for and a couple taken from the enemy. But until I got that Randall I never knew a knife could feel like such an extension of one's hand. You hold that thing and you can just feel the culmination of 5,000 years of edged weapon development. I carried it for several years until I broke the very tip during the 1st gulf war. No, not throwing it, but sitting down in a cramped Egyptian tank. I have no doubt it's as good a weapon as one can carry on a belt that you don't have to reload or take off to poop. But I wouldn't carry one into combat today. The "O1 Tool Steel" that lets it take and hold a fantastic edge is a bit brittle for many tasks, the full cross hilt that keeps your bloody hand from slipping onto the edge during a furious stab makes many more mundane tasks tedious, the length that will penetrate well into half a man's torso makes fine tasks difficult. It weighs as much as a small pistol and is twice as awkward to carry. Today I'd opt for a nice slim folder in one pocket, a multitool in the other, a 5" bushcraft or similar blade on the vest, a "banana knife" (short machete) and a titanium E-tool in the ruck. Maybe a small folding saw too, and pruners for sniper and recon work. That should cover just about everything anywhere. Still, every few years I pull the old Randall out from the bottom of the footlocker and just hold it for a bit. It's like slow dancing with your girl at the prom. Nothing else feels quite like she does. Oh and if you plug one side of the lanyard hole with a fingertip and blow across the other like a flute it makes a great loud whistle.

It only excels as a fighting knife, but it does everything else incredibly well if it's the only cutting tool you have. And it won't let you down. Mine is a 'sometimes' carry; I usually carry more specialized cutting tools instead. But for 'maybe' situations and serious survival I'll have mine on my belt simply because with just it and a ferro rod I can handle anything which I can handle at all. Best knife ever made but you only discover that if you use it.

Congratulations! These are the best knives ever. My first Randall was received about 1 year after my father died. He ordered them for himself, me, and my brother and after 3 years from the order they arrived about 1 year after his death. Needless to say my Randall means a world to me. Since then I’ve bought more for my sons and myself over the years. The leather sheath on my first knife caused corrosion where it contacted the brass guard, and I solved that by coating the leather in that area with Vaseline. Keep the blade oiled or coated in silicone, or keep it out of the sheath. The quality of the knife and the sheath is unbelievable. If you don’t want to wait AG Russell also keeps a stock of many of the models. Mine is a Model 3. The one knife I would carry if the SHTF.

Use Renaissance wax after giving it a good cleaning. Also great on leather sheaths but may darken light tan colored ones. I have used on some of my Black Jack knives and it won't remove any patina but gives the blade a great look and protects it also

I thought they cost a 1000 dollars or something. And i dont think that would be wrong eather. Handmade means perfection, 10 times better than factory knives. I forge and make knives and you dont earn much. It takes time to forge, make the knife by hand and then make the sheat. You have to do it for the love of knives and the creation itself. It takes time and you really work for it,and with the cost of materials and the time you use. You are happy just to cover the cost of materials alone. But gratulations with the knife, very cool knife to have. Good to have dreams come thru,it is healthy i think. I was afraid you where going to throw it.

They seemed to get here before I knew it....not this one. To borrow from Guy Clark, "my hand burns for the Randall knife (specifically the Model 1 with Thuja Burl handle). If a better blade was ever made, it was probably forged in hell."

I'm a little disappointed in the final product, IE sharpness of blade and top blade, and the tip seems rounded or blunt. I can definitely understand it is a fighting knife, as such to me, should be extremely sharp(thick behind edge though) and very stabby pokie. That aside, congratulations 👏 on acquiring a beautiful Randall model 1. Such a Excellent find without the wait. I have no doubt you will treat it right and not use as a bushcrafter but I suspect you won't lock it up in the safe, just doesn't seem like you Bryan. Posting this for a Marine (NOT Former Marine!) "During the war I served with a Recon Unit, Bo Randall would put a priority on building and shipping to Service men, I think the last Number 2 Randall I bought cost me $77.00 with shipping. I have none of the Randall's from that era because when you get wounded the other Marines got your gear (as it should be!) I do have some modern Randall's in my collection but CAN NOT use those! Knife King makes a micarta handled, D2 steel, number 1 style for around $50 for those who want one to field or Balance test. I wish we could post pictures here. Timber Wolf makes a pretty good leather handled Number 2 clone by the way. NO ONE makes a Ruana (Bowie) clone, as just the amount of steel he used would make the knife unprofitable! It’s not considered a “super steel” by today’s standards and neither are most of the “older” steels like 1075, 1080, 1095, 5160, O-1, D2, 440C, etc. These steels when given a superior heat-treat perform extremely well and have withstood the test of time. IMHO any steel that is given a proper heat-treatment for that particular steel will perform well. Randall 440B stainless is a good stainless steel, is tough, and holds an edge well. Look on their website & they will explain how & why they came up with using 440B. Pretty sure they came up with the “Astro” knife for NASA back in the early 1960’s. Being hand made, nothing is perfect. 83 yrs of satisfied customers. They must be doing something right.

Dang that’s been one of my unafordable (to me) knives. Enjoy it it’s a great knife. I wanted one the first time I ever saw it offered (when I was a kid I believe )and that was years before I heardGuy Clark’s song. It’s a beautiful blade and well proven.

I've wanted a Randall knife since the first time I saw one. While looking at some model 1s on ebay I came across a Black Jack Effingham 1-7. I ended up buying it because the price was much better than that of a Randall. And being made of carbon steel, I see no difference really between a Randall and a Black Jack which from my understanding are also handmade. My 1-7 has stacked leather handle and brass cross guard. Now I own a few different BJ 1-7s, hunters, Sabre handles etc. The sheaths are also high quality. I'd still love a Randall but I believe these early BJ 1-7s are sleepers. BTW, great video and you got that for a great price.

I got the new catalog/price list today. The price is $460.00 as of January 2022 for a #1, with a delivery time of August 2027. I bought my used 8” #1 at a gun show in the mid 1980’s from someone who knew nothing about Randall made knives for $35.00. Yes, that’s not a typo! Still have it and yes, it’s my favorite knife!

My Model 1 was a safe queen NEVER abused. Got it 30 years ago, every year I take it out and oil it, (yes it is stainless but it is just something I do) and the tang had broke 1 inch behind the hilt. Never dropped it, Never abused it. It was just broke. Randall replaced it for me, saying sometimes this happens with the stainless blades. My thinking now is the knifes that I will carry and use on a regular basis in the field will all be full tangs. Don't get me wrong, I love my Randall's, I have a Model 14 and two Model 1's, and they are beautiful knives, but that being said, I will have a full tang knife on my belt in the field.

Blackjack knives makes several versions of them,i have the nr 5 fighting knife in black micarta, nice liners. Polished aluminum pommel and finger guards. The blade is A2 tool steel. That steel get crasy sharp and is very strong. The leather sheat is also very good quality, i think they are made by Bark River. Very cool combo together with a RMJ made Vietnam Lagana hawk, which i have bought 3 of;-) dont know why,but i just love that type of hawk. So a Blackjack nr5,Lagana hawk, millitary grade Rem Wingmaster 870 and a 1911 you are good to go. I like it old school.

My dad had a Randall Model 1 made with his name stamped in it. After I am done with it it will be passed down to his grandson and then to his two year old great grand son. Good knife.A friend of my dad's son stole it, but I found it in his closet. He had cut the whetstone pocket off the sheath and the stone was gone. I'm thinking of having a custom leather guy make a pocket and putting a sheath back on the knife.

Most I've spent on a knife is a custom chopper I designed, $310. I know that's not $450, but I can see spending that on a knife. I wouldn't unless it's a custom for me, but I can see it.

They made your Randall with a long handle! On all three of mine they are all 4 3/4 with one being 4 3/4 short! 5 3/8 never seen one with that length. One of my model 1 has a blade length of 6 7/8 strong. With the other being 6 7/8 and the last one being 6 3/4. I wish they could had made them all with a true 7 inch blades. Yep, they are all different.

Beautiful! Carbon steel and leather don't mix too well in humid climates, like Georgia, even when stored indoors in a climate controlled environment. It might never rust if you take it out and fondle it now and then and keep it clean and oiled but with that kind of money invested I'm not sure I'd store in the sheath. One of my cousins inherited a pistol that belonged to his grandfather. It was in a leather holster and ended up pushed to the back of a shelf in a closet for 20 years. Had quite a bit of rust and some pitting on it where the leather was touching the slide and other areas.
