It's inspiring to see that unloved older cars can be bought back to life and used for a few more years. We're so quick to buy new. Love these videos, I am addicted to them. You have got such a great niche in these cheap car videos, love them and your elation or disappointment at this budget end!! 😄
Another absolute winner of a video. There are hundreds of car channels on KZread however this is,imo,by far the best. All top often they start with cheap and cheerful but soon creep up to spending £10k plus. They soon drift into uncomfortable collaborations with other channels. This however is gold. He's found a winning formula and sticks to it. I'm addicted to these brilliant videos
I used to have the 1.4 petrol version, it was a very very good car, really reliable. I managed to get one and a replacement half wings paid for by VW too!
This might sound weird but at about 12:06 when you're turning the pages of that book, I find the sound of the pages rubbing together really satisfying!! 🤣

Funny, it made my skin crawl.
I just sold my 05 mkV Golf TDI which I had it the last 8 years. Thankfully it was never a horror show of problems and warning lights. It was just a decent reliable motor. Except for the crusty front wing problem which I got sorted! I valeted the car, buffed up the head lights and added a fresh set of number plates. Great advice (inspired by this channel) which transformed the car 👍🏻 Great video as always. Cheers.
A lot of honesty and integrity goes a long way in these videos to dispel the used car dealer stigma, well done. Thanks for the upload.
Matt, just bought a new car and your recommendation for Car Vertical was a life saver. Used them on what appeared to be a great car at a reasonable price but discovered more than a few gremlins in its past. Well worth the £20 not to have to deal with those issues and know to go for something else!

Yes. I've seen a white 2 year old Dacia estate up on the North coast of Scotland, and it had rust forming around the wheel arches. Particularly the rear ones.....
An easy fix for those wheel arches could probably be to add some of those plastic extenders. My VW garage suggested to that to my mk2 after I had severely scratched one of them.
@allosaurusfragilis7782

I'm pretty sure the wings are bolt on with these. It's an easier job than fitting extenders straight. A bit of paint and that would last 3 or even 4 years.

Your mate's mate has got himself bargain, Everyone needs a friend like you.
Another great video, and an old story for you! I bet you can’t wait! In the 80s VW kept the price down, by making unusual things, options. A dealer received a Mars Red, under a year old 5 door Golf, low mileage that would normally fly out the door. But the one person who didn’t spend £145 or so, meant this one wouldn’t shift. So he bought it a new gear knob. With 5 written on it. On the test drive the new owner didn’t get beyond 4th, and never brought it back. Yes….5th gear was an option 😂
These Cheap Things Get Better Every Video Cheers Mat!
I have a 81k miless 2007 Golf GTI 3 door in basic standard trim with Aircon the only option ticked to my knowledge. A fantastic and thoroughly reliable car so far after almost 5 yrs. It has only needed tyres and some bushings to pass inspection and has been a delight to own. The interior even with the tartan seats is a little grey in colour and soul, but it looks like brand new. They clean up very well.
The wife and I both owned a GT Sport diesel at one point. Traded mine in, but we've, still got hers. I use it for work and it's a great car. It's reliable, simple and a great blend of performance and MPG. We've had hers 12 years now and it's been a great simple car, that makes you smile and it's no coincidence why they appear so much on police interceptor chases
There are cars for people and people for cars I think it’s great to keep any car on the road it’s just better🤷♂️ keep it up Matt thankyou 👏
That is an Inverness plate. The Highland winters are very harsh and cause serious corrosion issues. Cars last on average about 8 to 10 years up there. I know from bitter experience.

im looking to buy a mk5 golf, so thanks Mat, this'll really help.
The thing I like about the Mk5 is that it was the technical blue print for most Volkswagen, Skoda and Seat products going forward at least a decade. It makes retrofits and mods super easy. I'd toss the Pioneer head unit and replace it with a RCG-330g for the modern convenience of CarPlay and Android Auto with a factory look and integration. I'd also chuck a set of used alloys on - but only if it were my personal car and not a flip.
Great video Matt! Any advice on where to get plates?
I like the idea behind owning "just a car" like this for a year or 2 or bangernomics as i think you've called it if you look after it the thing will keep going, Then again having a nice motor is one of the only luxuries most of us have.
Great content Matt as always ... whats your favourite Golf mk?
Those 1.6lt FSI (BLF) engines have Chains, Sister had the bigger Horse Powered one and she loved it. Put plenty of miles on it. They runner between on Super Unleaded which is recommended in the Fuel Flap. Do use a bit oil though as my Sister found out.

This takes me back, when I was a child my mum had a mk5 1.9tdi Golf.
I'd say those marks/dents were from roof bars having been fitted for a long time, dirt getting under the feet etc. My guess would be window cleaners car previously.
'It's nice to be nice' says it all really👍
I think it's a crying shame that acar that once was new gets left to deteriorates..after a good job with the valeting guys it looks so much healthier & more like a car should look. Excellent these type of vlogs 👌
I had one of these (purchased during COVID so I didn't need to catch public transport) which I recently sold to a mate - super cheap. You're right, the finish isn't the best, but the 1.6 litre engine goes pretty well with the 5 speed gearbox.
1.9 TDI PD Is the greatest engine ever made
Old crusty wings seems to be the old vw trade mark lol specially on the golf's. Least you made a small profit its better than nothing. Really enjoy these videos 📹

That guy got a bargain
Here in the states vw had a program where they would repair any corrosion up until 2020 I think. My son has a 2010 MK5 jetta Wolfsburg DSG about 4 years ago with 111k miles with a recent cam belt. VW pretty much re-bodied it for free. New wings, new quarters, new boot and new bonnet, though all only had minor bubbling starting. Car looked brand new. Well kept otherwise. 137k now. Been pretty much flawless other than normal wear and tear items.
With that bodywork it was always worth loose change. You did alright.
Had a couple of golf's and agree they are garbage, I had one with the same fault you mentioned and would just cut out randomly and not restart. Took it loads of garages no one could find the fault until one day it broke down and would not restart! I called the AA and within two mins he had found and fixed the fault! It was the switch contacts on the back of the ignition barrel burnt out! Replaced that and never had the issue again!
Have had one of these mk5 with the same 1.6 fsi, weren't that bad, all of the rust had been taken care of, still drives great with 270k km on it. These engines can easily get to 400/500k km with good maintanance
Mk5 Golfs. I can only echo your sentiments about them. Rusty wings and sills are a given, they eat rear tyres, constant electrical glitches, duff window regulators.....they drive well when their working...but for long term durability...I'll take the 250 quid Fiat Panda! 😁

Never known or had a reliable Golf
I bought my wife a Mk5 2.0 diesel a few years ago. She loved it. I didn't, because it was me that was constantly getting the thing fixed. The body and interior was solid enough but the DSG and engine just seemed fragile. She now has a tuned Mk7 Golf Alltrack which I love, and she drives my Amarok...
Lovely Jubbly, nice wee Golf. Maybe they lived next to a Golf Course with all those wee dents😏
I don’t think I could find that kind of deal over here in the US if I tried. Well done!
I got a mk5 2,0 TDI couldn't be happier, bulletproof. Yes they can have electrical problems but if you put non OEM sensors in there can give out a wrong voltage readout and VW love to turn the engine light on for minor things. Also the door fabric de laminates the process starts from factory and is accelerated by heat me being in Australia I had to get it re trimmed.
Definitely better than the last Golf featured on your channel, Matt.👍
I have the 1.9 TDI estate, same year as this, and have to say, it has been faultless, I bought it when it was 4 years old, and right up until this last year, the only costs have been normal wear and tear. Having said that, it has now developed a small oil leak, which is coming from the crankcase bearing, so I am going to move it on to someone else. I don't have any rust issues, maybe that was already sorted by the previous owner on the recall you mentioned.
"Bong of doom": Sounds like a Hawkwind album. The mystery music sounded like Crosby, Stills & Nash - yes, I am old..
Decent little car for that money. The 1.6FSI has a chain and it's its Achilles heal. Also the coil packs go but not expensive if you get spurious ones. Always give it a minute after stating up and it'll last a long time. I've had one with 220k without issues other than a coil.
You need to clean out underneath the windscreen wipers and make sure the drains are empty because the leaves will let the water build up and you will get water ingress into the foot wells, underneath carpet notorious for the mark five. Smells and always damp n condensation inside
Filler and a few rattle cans from Halfords will probably have those front wings tenfold more presentable for the next owner. As a daily hack, it’ll do just fine. As long as it starts, stops and steers, you can’t go wrong. To get a running, driving car for under a grand is hard work at the minute. To get a nice branded car with FSH for under a grand is good going, even if it is a bit tatty.
While exchange rates aren't a perfect comparison, there seems to be a lot of cheap kind of good cars in the UK. The used car market in the U.S. is still crazy high, but getting not as bad.

Hi Matt, another great video, as soon as you said Arnold Clark i thought ex motability car maybe, Arnold is/was Scottish, anyway all the very best to you Matt, from Nick the Lexus guy.
That’s defiently had one of those Tentbox things on it, always knacker the roof on cars without roof rails
the sponge story is funny they only had the sponge in the diesel versions to reduce noise, the petrol engines did not had the sponge which got wet, was very common in the same gen passats
Hi Matt you missed the one about matching rust spots on wings. Another profit
It's interesting hearing you say cars from Scotland are often rotten. Just over two years ago I bought a 2015 Honda CRV from a dealer in Burton on Trent, show room condition. 4 months in I put new pads on the back just to find the underneath absolutely rotten, checked the service book, it came from Scotland! Thanks to mad used prices and WBAC I just about got my money back after 11 months.
This car proves what you say about regular maintenance: regular servicing pays dividends in the long term. My 03 reg petrol Octavia was still going strong at 17 years old and 155000 miles when I traded it in although I got next to nothing for it. Great video again.

Another great video and a “MASSIVE SHOUTOUT “ to “CAR VERTICAL “ for sponsoring the video.
It looked so much tidier after a clean, I’d say the interior looked almost brand new. My mate had the 2.0 CR diesel. He had endless trouble with it and ended up scrapping it. Yet my brother had one (3 door) 2.0 CR Diesel and it was a fantastic, and reliable car. I run a mk4 1.9tdi in a skirt !!!…….. A beetle 😂 I find with VW’s, you either land lucky or very unlucky with them. Excellent video but you missed if the climate worked or not 😂
Bought one last year, Ksh 500,000 2007, (£4000 equivalent) had a faulty fuse box which caused multiple electrical faults, replaced and is now a great car
A year, I would knock another 10 years out of that. The Fsi engine was new to Vw's at the time and cost a bit more --it was also easier to service with the oil filter on top of the engine. Also thought this engine had a chain. Good review again.
