Since I am a classical pianist, I wear a tuxedo on stage. And since my old one doesn't fit me anymore, I'll soon get a new one, and this tuxedo dates from the late 1930s ! And it is cheaper and much better than most tuxes you find in stores here.

I got this tip from Rafael's channel about three years ago. I went on eBay and found two Ermenegildo Zegna suits, one navy pinstripe and the other charcoal gray. I believe they are made from Super 150 wool. Made in Italy and very fine quality. I bought each one for about $150 apiece. They were almost dead-on for my measurements so they only required about $50 in alterations. Since buying them, I have worn them to a few weddings (and funerals, unfortunately) and always receive compliments on how they look. I feel very confident when I wear them because I know I'm dressed better than 99% of the other guys in the room. They were a great deal for $200 apiece. You couldn't come close to this quality buying something new for the price.

I was blessed with a Zenga blazer & suit from my father..And one my ex gfs was super into vintage..even worked at a vintage spot & repurposed old clothes. She put me up so many great vintage spots & the ways they would acquire vintage clothing, accessories & furniture.

Nice. I get sick of the whiners claiming they can only afford to wear gym clothes. I recently sold a Anthony Sinclair suit on eBay for $350. That suit currently retails for over $2k new. Bad luck for me, great deal for the guy that bought it. I had worn it twice. Great deals to be had out there.

I picked up a vintage Burberry trench coat on ebay for about $200 a few years back. Way nicer quality than the new ones at a bargain price.

I've taught myself to tailor over the years, so I don't have that added tailor's tax when getting a beautiful secondhand garment. It very quickly became my favor hobby , and i find it a Zen task in a hectic week. My closet is full of happy memories each time I pull something out to wear!

My best thrift shop finds have been a 100% cashmere full length overcoat for $20. Also, Burberry blazer for $4, fantastic vintage tweed jackets for $5, a Tombolini sports jacket for $3, Thomas Pink shirts for $4, and Gucci, Zegna, Dunhill, Burberry, Loewe, Armani ties and one Hermes tie for no more than $1 each. It is amazing what you can find thrufting. Great video and the suit looks great on you.

Excellent video, as always! I’m glad that more and more people are discovering the beauty of second hand shopping and the excitement of the hunting and finding the holy grails. I have been doing this for quite a while, and from last year, I also started reselling, which is also fun (and my shoppings are now 100% covered by the earnings from that). I have had some crazy deals during the years, for example: Ralph RL67 jacket for 200€, the legendary YSL double breasted suit for 25€, or a 80s Ralph cricket sweater for 10€. I think we can all agree that we are looking foward to your videos even more now, since you discovered second hand. Have a great hunting!

My first vintage suit was also a navy pinstriped suit made in Italy with Loro Piana fabric. I paid $35 for the suit, in excellent condition, and $150 on tailoring, so $185 in total.Some other finds have been even better bang for the buck, e.g. a Caruso suit for $110 (tailoring included)

I bought three Canali suits at my local rummage sale for $30 each. I recently bought about $40,000 worth of men's jackets at Goodwill for under $40 total.

I bought a used Burberry trench coat and was surprised at the number of compliments I received. I have since lost weight and bought another used one. Can’t go wrong with a classic that works.

I have just started to purchase second hand items online. My favorite piece I found online is a three piece Dinner suit with grosgrain lapels from the 30s, it is a perfect fit and needs no alterations, with that beautiful silhouette with you should expect from such a garment.

This was a great and very needed video! I recently bought a 1980s Hart Schaffner and Marx 2pc suit on eBay. It’s a beautiful single breasted, deep gray, brown pinstripe w/ lower wide lapels which I personally look for. The Trousers are pleated and slightly higher waisted. I got it dry cleaned and now I just need to see the tailor.

I bought all my best shoes in Ebay… Prada, Churchs, Tods, Calzoleria Harris and… Brunello Cucinelli… Always, great deals… Your video moves me to, finally, take to my tailor a Caruso italian pinstripe navy wooll 42 suit that I get from Marshalls!!! years ago for a ridiculous red tag price and never use it. In grad school I had a part time job that required a suit. I bought about a dozen over five or six years. Great labels, never paid more than $35+fitting. Fitting made the difference. I still own most of them. Valentino, Hickey Freeman, Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, Tom Ford, others; beautiful suits for pennies on the dollar.

The suit came out just wonderful!!

I never met my maternal grandfather, but he had great taste, roughly the same build, and I'm forever grateful grandmother saved a bunch of his jackets.

I have done a little bit of used clothes shopping and have had good results. My best was a Brooks Brothers sport jacket I bought for $41 US that is in near pristine condition and only required minor tailoring.

Very stylish 30s style suit! I am also very partial to second hand clothes and have amassed a wonderful wardrobe over the years with this technique. As Alan Flusser notes “all the nicest clothes are always a little bit shabby”.

This works for those that typically fall within the "standard sizing" of RTW clothes. However, for those much taller or shorter than average, those who have much larger or smaller than average shoulders or other measurements that are typically unalterable by a tailor, the only remaining option is made to measure or bespoke.

As someone whose budget limits them to exclusively second-hand classic menswear pieces, I love this video. Very early on in my menswear journey, I scored a Hickey-Freeman Bespoke 100% cashmere Prince of Whales sport coat for $1 at my local thrift store in perfect condition with no alterations needed - definitely not the norm, but finding a quality piece like what you found even with alterations is an incredible feeling like no other. Great score man, keep up the incredible work and if you’re up for it and it aligns with your content, a series where you put together a 4 season classic menswear capsule wardrobe with only second-hand pieces including alterations would be an incredible watch and would provide immense value.

I would say over a year ago I went thrifting nearby in New Jersey and managed to find two of my absolute favorite wool overcoats both in a beautiful tweed. One is DB, peak lapels, and gray. It is a heavy coat and the sleeves fit perfectly. My only concern was its length which had been fixed with my trusted alterations tailor. The other coat is from the same store a couple months later. It was tailored back in the 60s and just fit me perfectly (length, sleeves, shoulders). One small hole that could be mended but it really isn't visible to anyone. From eBay I would say my best purchase was a vintage Ralph Lauren (Blue Label), pinstripe DB suit in a dark brown. I purchased it because it had been listed with a hole in the seams of the trousers (absolute easy fix). I managed to get a great deal of $80 and the buyer was very kind and understanding. Luckily, it was to my perfect length but just needed sleeve alterations and tapering. Upon shipping here, there was one small moth hole, but it was on the seam of the coat where it would be tapered anyways. It is absolutely one of my favorite suits from second-hand buying. I believe some great points are to have a trusted alterations tailor, and an open mind to buying second-hand. It is green in a way and why not wear these amazing pieces that others would have thrown away.

Wonderful find and beautiful fit. I have purchased 3 Kiton suits from ebay valued at over $20,000. I paid just over $1,500 and less than $200 for tailoring. I enjoy the new life they have with me and the fabulous feel they give me every time I wear them.

The suit looks fantastic! Great score, but was anything done about the holes? I purchased a Brooks Brothers navy sport coat from a thrift shop a couple of months back. I was able to try it on, it had no size tag. It fit me like it was made for me, so I bought it...$6. When I got it home I discovered a tiny pinhole in the back, barely visible. Even though it was tiny I didn't want contrasting shirt fabric to show through the hole, so I picked up some iron-on patches in navy blue, cut one to the size I needed and ironed it on the inside of the jacket, covering the hole. Instant fix. I have worn it several times since then, it looks great.

It's funny, but I think I saw that listing. We are the same size. I just started buying on eBay and taking what i find to my tailor. It's a game changer. I wish I had grabed that one up! Nice find!

Ebay can become quite an addiction once you have a few saved searches with email alerts. I typically receive 40-50 emails a day! I have spent a lot of money over the last 12 months but the items were normally 10-15% of the retail price. My best bargains recently: 2 Gieves & Hawkes blazers - one a wool Light Grey Check, the other a Needlecord in sand. £120 for the pair. Both look awesome!

I have several suits from The Custom Shop which is now just in New York I believe that has shows around the country. For me nothing like them and if I could, I would be buried in all the ones I have.🧐 But for a budget in California, we have the three day suit broker. As an example a few years back, I picked up a great Hugo Boss for $150 and wore it so much I finally wore it out.…… You’ll always have good ideas

Great looking suit. Been picking up second hand Zegna and Canali suits for years on eBay. They’d normally be way out my price range but easily found for less than £100.

I bought 2 Orazio Luciano car coats off of eBay, checked the measurements and they were my exact measurements fit, basted stitching and the price for both were $400 each. Sometimes you find those treasures. Best kept secret in the industry. Thank you!

I very rarely find clothes online that are modern and that I like. Sometimes the brands are not expensive and the price is nearly the same like in a shop🙄😃. But I have noticed that sometimes there are classical shoe types, like the Derby, that have only been worn a few times and cost between $200 and $600 in the store. At a flea market there is a dealer who used to have 2 good shops in the past and sometimes he offers modern and good dress shirts by famous brands. But you have to be careful when people sell clothes that only a professional can repair. Once found a jacket from Switzerland that was made with good English wool. Although it was made in the 1970s, it had narrow lapels and is in keeping with today's fashion. This jacket contained a number of tailor's and fabric merchant's labels. That was amazing. It was a high quality product for sure. I have roughly the same body shape as our presenter.

I had to pause this to go put on a Navy pinstripe RL Polo suit jacket made in Italy. It is a two piece suit I got for $10 (it was $20 but half price day). While fetching the jacket part of the suit I "found" a Canadian made grey suit in my closest I likely paid a similar price for and forgot I had it. It is a bit of a pinstripe but I also found a solid gray vest of similar tone. I am 90% happy with the fit of both but need to take them to a tailor to get an expert opinion. Before I go the eBay route, I'd want to get all my measurements professionally done. Other picks is a Charles Tyrwhitt yellow plaid overcoat I love, a Burburry's Car Coat $2000 for $150, Allen Edmond shoes for $100, and more recently a Canadian made of British wool navy jumper ($275 for $60) and a ivory Irish made fishermen's sweater. I try for a perfect fit now so I am willing to pay a bit more than the usual $10-$20. Really, too many good deals to list.

Came across this just 2 hours after picking up a woolblend suit for just 20€. The pants legs need slight alterations to fit my silhouette and length, but that’s great value for money if you ask me!

Fusing tape is very good for minor moth holes, use tape on top to rejoin it, then iron on the fuse tape underneath to close the holes.

Yet again I have found myself very impressed and interested after watching a video of yours! I was wondering if you could make a deeper dive into this subject, and maybe explain what you were looking for when buying this wonderful suit.

I found sartorial bliss on ebay several years ago with Hilditch and Key shirts, a Turnbull and Asser dress shirt. Recently I have picked up a half dozen really nice Eton shirts, 3 Paul Smith shirts, 3 Egyptian cotton Brooks Brothers shirts, 3 Canali shirts, and a Canali and 2 Corneliani sport coats. Almost got an Isaia sport coat, but some beat me to it. Just beware that you will likely have to have some of it tailored (Eton shirt sleeves are 36+ inches, I wear a 35). But it is still worth it when the average price for a high quality shirt is $35-$40 including shipping. My favorites have been the Canali navy sport coat (about $150, a recent model, tailoring about $150) and a Corneliani light blue herringbone blazer (about $100, tailoring about $50). Congrats on your find!

I have bought several pieces from thrift stores and I do find that I spend more on the tailoring afterwards but I still come out ahead.

When coming to sourcing luxury suiting fabric on a budget, Ebay has been my go to place and i have never been disappointed. I have a trusted tailor in my city he only bills me $250 for labour to do an MTM suit.

Since I was a child, I learned how to hunt for second-hand clothes. It is surprising that people first buy those with Nike and Adidas logos. My trophies include a Brunello Cucinelli cashmere coat purchased for $7, an Ermenegildo Zegna cashmere jacket for $10, and a brand new Barbour jacket for $35. 80% of my wardrobe is second-hand, I only buy new leather shoes and basic things. For me, hunting is part of the adventure of dressing stylishly. It's great that you raise this topic, I've been following your channel from the very beginning and I keep my fingers crossed for your development.

My wardrobe is a mixture of items I bought new, and secondhand, from TradeMe (local NZ equivalent to Ebay), FB marketplace and charity shops. In one such shop, I found a $20 AUD note (~$22 NZD) in the inside pocket of a jacket I bought for about $30, so it almost paid for itself 😂

I spent a huge amount of time on eBay looking for suits and pants .. only the dress type. Landed a Brioni suit just like your pinstripe but on black, not blue. Paid $250 and I'm happy.

Superb result... I expect that cloth is not at all cheap and it's fits pretty much spot on. I've bought all my clothes shoes used. Certainly with the shoes I could never justify what they cost new. I currently have about a dozen pairs of British made shoes from Crockett & Jones, Cheaney, Trickers and Church's. I also have a pair of velvet slippers from a shop in that posh arcade in St James's that were a few hundred quid new. I seek out shoes that have worn soles as I am able to resole them myself to a better standard than most cobblers can offer.... I do have to get a friendly cobbler to do the outsole stitch for me though.... but it's the quick easy element of a resole so costs very little. All i need is a worn out shoe with uppers in good condition... the rest I can do myself, including renewing the welt, by hand. I also have a sewing machine so I can shorten shirt sleaves, add a dart, shorten and narrow trousers, take in or let out the waist and similar alterations on suits... only the very basic stuff though. I would never be able to afford this level of quality new. great video and congrats on buying something rather excellent. M

Great job I’ve been able to purchase a Burberry navy double breasted blazer with brass buttons.Armani double breasted glen plaid blazer and I’m currently waiting for my latest purchase to arrive a Givenchy double breasted grey pin strip suit that I’ll have to have the pants shortened but with cleaners and slight alterations I will have spent less than $300 total

I recently started buying jackets from eBay and I'm really kicking myself for not having done it earlier. You can find a lot of Suit Supply jackets for under $100 and some appear brand new still with the pockets stitched, like one I bought. Haven't had any altered yet, but since there's a Suit Supply store in the mall near me, they do alterations similar to Charles Tyrwhitt, and I've bought CT jackets and had them altered there also. The one thing to be aware of is that the sellers rarely if ever say what kind of weave the jacket is. For example, they'll just say it's a Navy jacket and you'll have to use your eye to see if it's worsted, or serge, or sharkskin or hopsack. Though they will say if it's flannel or tweed. Luckily I bought a nice Suit Supply navy VBC hopsack jacket, which was exactly what I was looking for. The sleeves are a bit long and overall the fits of the jackets are good. Navy, grey and brown are the easiest colors to find. Something a bit different will require patience. I'm looking for a nice Prince of Wales or hounds tooth check wool/linen/silk or wool/linen sportcoat. I think that will round out my wardrobe nicely with what I already have. I'm patiently waiting for the right one to pop up. I would definitely caution not to become too overly enthusiastic with the lower prices. Like James mentioned, you very easily could spend more on the alterations than on the jacket itself. Also beware of the shipping cost because if you have to return it, you're basically spending double the shipping cost to return it. There aren't many people who offer free shipping or free returns. There are a few overseas sellers, usually in Eastern Europe who offer free shipping and returns but the shipping time is longer.

After watching, I got 6/4 gold button double breasted Navy blue blazer and a blue 6/4 double breasted blazer. Both garments are well made, maybe 20-30 years old for stores that closed in the last century, in good shape. I have regularly used tailoring, but unexpectedly, none necessary. I am very close to perfect 40R. I suspect the prior owners never had the jackets altered. My win. Jackets from the 80s and 90s were just better made. No receipts or gum. I already had success getting ties, especially bow ties, overcoats, shoes, boots, and pocket squares on eBay. I held off on jackets till now.

I also like a slightly shorter suit jacket and for the cuffs to show. After switching from size 42L to 42R I rarely have to do alterations. I am 6’3” for reference.

I buy most of my jackets and suits second hand. Mainly from thrift stores. My greatest find must be a white tie ensamble, tail coat, vest and trousers for around $ 25. Being a lodge guy i have had two occasions to wear it.

I bought 2 suits from ebay, and while I didn't get them tailored, I wore them for a few years on rotation. I lost a button on one, then gained some weight, so I decided to buy a new suit. I was disappointed in my purchase from Mens Wearhouse, with stretch fabric and poor tailoring. It was half the price of a custom $1k suit though. I've also bought several pairs of Allen Edmonds shoes from ebay, and have worn them for the last 3-5 years. I'm fully satisfied with those. I buy all my dress pants (that I wear to work daily) from a local thrift store, so I don't have to worry about damaging them.

Man.. I could never recommend shortening a jacket by more than MAYBE an inch. The balance can be terribly affected and while most won't notice, the ones who do will be people whose opinion I wouldn't dismiss. I understand that saving money by buying an older jacket might seem ideal, but the risk you run is those alterations creative a negative aesthetic in the suit, making it look like you lost a ton of weight / were given a hand me down jacket and don't have the money to buy new. It's such a fine line between having a piece that looks made for you and altered for you. And make no mistake: if a suit looks altered for you, it instantly cheapens the garment. A good tailor (seamster / seamstress, actually, as the garment is pre-existing while a tailor creates from scratch) alters in such a way that the garment looks unaltered. Measured twice, cut once, custom crafted. That's the ideal. Extreme alterations don't give that affect.

I brought a nice pair of shoes from Ebay in 2021. Still wearing them today.

I did the same for what's my first and only suit as for now, a vintage double breasted Zegna one in charcoal gray, that I bought for 150 bucks. Fantastic drape cut for the jacket and high waisted, full cut trousers. There's only one downside to it and it's the quite low armholes, which make the jacket look terrible when I raise my arms past a certain point, but hey, for the price... Can't complain.

With those shoulders and stripes, Now all you need is a pair of Oliver People’s tortoise shell spectacles, and a Bone business card with Sillian Rail font.

I like structured suit jackets for formal events but for casual and spring/summer I like unstructured suit jackets.

Found an unknown, made in Canada suit about a year ago. Has no brand tag, or even size tag, all it says is Made in Canada and 100% wool. The thing fits me perfectly, like it was bespoke made for me. $30 USD.

Look for shoes! I bought a pair of Trotter and Deane suede shoes for £25. Would normally have cost over 200. Fantastic and no extra cost.

Thanks for not just promoting expensive things on your channel. Quite rare to see videos like this these days when everyone is pushing sponsors. I'm not sure I would risk buying normal clothes on eBay because the hassle of it not fitting would be more trouble than its worth, but for something expensive like a suit, for which tailoring is probably a good idea anyway, makes it quite a good idea. If there's one thing I could ask though, is that even though you've now "made it big" in America, please don't forget your British viewers when it comes to making recommendations for stores and brands.

Yes, Bermuda has some of the best prices at thrift shops i have found. We have a lot of offshore financial companies here and there is a big turn over of staff. I'm guessing they don't like taking their clothes with them when they leave. I have also found Eton shirts, Churchs shoes, etc but not in my size. Oh, and a Tom Ford tie for $2.

Great video. I buy second hand only. I trawl the op shops. My latest buy was a pair of black suede Milano boots. $50. My size and a clean and detail of the edges and good to go. When you pick up quality shoes you get an instant feel of quality. I buy $30 Suit supply jackets. I think they are special orders not picked up. Brand new. YSL boots $50. Vintage scarves,cravats,dressing gowns shirts. Versace Ferragamo YSL Calbre Dunhill Dolce and Gabbana T-shirt’s. Antique rings. It’s a smorgasbord in op shops and second hand vintage. Great video. Unfortunately, I find it a bit more difficult to find vintage suits that I like, because I am of average height and have quite muscular shoulders so I prefer more unstructured suits with less padding around the shoulders. But I‘ll keep looking

I love thrifting suits. I particularly have a taste for Isaia suits and blazers and I can regularly pick them up in practically brand new condition off of second hand stores for around 300 usually but I’ve gotten fantastic ones for about $100 before. If you looked on tags alone you would think my wardrobe belonged to a millionaire, but I really only spend a little above average cost on most of the items in my wardrobe

My favorite item I've ever bought is actually a pair of shoes, Allen Edmonds park avenue. Beautiful color, absolutely magnificent leather. Once I hydrated them they easily became my favorite. And, I think, the best part is the date code shows Jan 1985. 40 year old shoes, and now they have a new home where I can care for them.

Great content, James. I have purchased three jackets on eBay; two turned out well, the third one was a non starter. Here are some words of caution when buying second hand clothes online. Size: Jackets and suits are available in ‘Regular’, ‘Long’ and ‘Short’ fittings. For example my size is 38 Regular (38R). Just because something is described as `38’ does not indicate which of those fittings it is. Having sight of the labels on the garment is essential. These will also tell you what it is made of. The 38” jacket I purchased turned out to be a 38 Long. Shortening jackets can be a red flag because, in the instance of a 'Long' fit jacket, the pocket locations are all in proportion for the longer body the jacket was cut to fit. In my case, shortening the jacket length would have ruined all of these proportions and my tailor advised against it. I gave the jacket away and put it down to experience. The solution? We all have suits, jackets and trousers that fit us well. Lay them out, in turn, and take the measurements of each (sleeve, body, chest, and trouser length from the crotch to the hem) and note them all down. I now always ask for the corresponding measurements of any garment I am looking to purchase. Another reason for doing this is to establish if the item you intend buying has been altered from the size on the label. For example, those 34/32 trousers might have been altered to 34/30). Condition: Be cautious of moth or cigarette burn damage. Likewise tears, stains and scorch marks. Always check photographs carefully and read the full listing description. What looks incidental in photographs could be difficult - and costly - to put right invisibly. Avoid.

I bought an old house several years ago. When emptying it, I discovered two good wool quality men suits from the 80's. I didn't know what to do with them because neither my father, nor my brother, could wear them. I gave them to charity....
