Somehow Succession has become today's poster child for "quiet luxury" and the "old money" aesthetic. But anyone who paid attention to the show would know that Logan Roy was born poor and built his empire from nothing. First generation wealth. That is the definition of "new money."

It’s not just about the generational aspect. You are overlooking the fact that these aren’t some run of the mill nouveau-rich types, they are one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in the world (in the show they are based on the Murdoch family.) Because they are so well known and in the public eye, it would be considered gauche and quite absurd to appear ostentatiously dressed, as it would imply a serious lack of concern regarding upholding the family’s image of status and professionalism.

It is true that films and TV shows will use clothing as a “language” to get across a certain feeling/vibe about a character. They have been doing this for a long time. A good costume designer will do this. Why he/she will need to know the scene. Is it a scene with tension? Comedy? Sadness? Violence? Etc. Also the color of that clothing plays a big part. Huge part. To help with the mood of that scene. Character.

It's all relative. $3k for billionaires whose worth keeps growing billions a year is nothing. They are not the usual rich who we call rich. They are the rich people for the popular rich people we constantly see in the media. Imagine having a whole media empire where Lebron is just an employee and an asset of one of your divisions. They're off the scale😂imagine you want to buy some clothes for what it is to you paying 0.000000075% of your net worth (3,000 divided by 40 billion). Would you choose a certain shop or a brand just for the sake of getting into an empty place where you feel comfortable and have a more pleasant buying experience and get a high quality item? I would. Why any hassle for buying anything (queues and masses surrounding coming at you -they're famous-) when I can just get something really good and a good time for what it is nearly nothing to me?

Good vid, each of the characters (talking about Logan Roy's adult children) added something different, Shiv and Roman seemed to be impeccably dressed all the time, while Kendall, certainly let his love for HipHop determine the way he dressed.

Showing no logos is the best thing. It’s opposite what the Chinese want. They are always wanting to show the logos so they can show off to their friends and family that they have some money. I lived in Asia and saw this constantly. I even saw one guy still wearing a stitched on temp logo of a suit on the outside of his jacket sleeve. I told him that it should be cut off he immediately said “NO”. That he wanted his friends and relatives to see that. To give everyone the impression that he had some money. Even though it looked odd to leave it on the jacket sleeve. That’s why I think most people buy these expensive pieces so they can then show off that designer label. It’s ALL about the label. The name. Crazy.

And really how is that different from spending a ton on something with no logos, hoping to be recognized by someone in the IYKYK crowd? At least they're being upfront about their intentions.

correct me if i'm wrong,, but the burberry bag was mocked because its a day bag/ tote worn on the intimate celebration / soiree. when women normally wear small bags and clutches. not once was it insulted for branding but rather how big it was. iirc

Rich people wear cheap stuff. That’s what I truly see. They just don’t care. Quiet luxury is just the new monogram for the masses. Rich people dont care about their look. They care about their words.

…great insight on the Old Money aesthetic. Haven’t yet seen the series Succession but I luckily have been in the mix with these lot having been born and raised in Atherton, CA. Its influence on me has been significant yet since it is in the SF Bay Area, it isn’t as severe as in the East Coast. J. Crew, Club Monaco, RRL, Brooks Brothers, Banana Rep were some of the local staples. But the big difference is in the fit. I always take mine to our trusted tailor for a better fit. One I have inherited from my GrandMama. So find an excellent tailor near you, it’s worth it.

Did the production crew actually use the real brand and clothes mentioned though? It would cost a lot, right? For something most people would not notice. Also, seeing how "plain" and "quiet" these outfits and clothes are, how are people able to identify the brand and piece?

I mean there's a point to buying expensive clothes if you care about the quality and durability of the piece, but it's dumb to buy just for the looks when you can find very similar pieces that are way less expensive.
