I Blew Up A Dive Watch!

This time I show how, during my endeavours to create a good quality but affordable Dive Watch, I ended up exploding a Dive Watch in the pressure testing tank. The video tells the story of how I created my SEA WOLF Watch and the theory behind the pressure testing of a dive watch. It also shows what happens when a watch fails the test ....

Hi Tom! Such good feedback to hear and kind of you to say it so publicly ... I have pinned your comment so that more folks will get to see it! Much appreciated. Richard

I really like the look of the 'original black' one along with its PVD coating... However I do like a stainless steel bracelet...
I really like this kind of videos with a good story and some scientific explanations !
My side hurts from laughing at the "science speed up"! This is one of your greatest videos!
We were going on a dive in the Florida Keys. We got to the bottom and were tightening our gear and my buddies dive watch made quite a loud crack/explosion. I don't think most recreational divers exceed 130 ft or about 40 meters. If a dive watch can do it repeatedly it's a good watch.
Great video Richard and it's always good to hear insights from a genuine watchmaker, rather than one of the many channels on here who are just trying to sell us another watch that we simply don't need! But then again... As an amateur tinkerer and enthusiast with a modest collection both automatic and quartz, I purchased one of these pressure testers from a well known auction site and wanted to be sure of water resistance of a 300m MWC after I replaced the battery and an Orient DIVER'S 200m that had the caseback removed for regulation. And I'm happy to say that they have both passed the 60m test with flying colours (and the odd static bubble) I didn't even have to ask myself if I "was planning to take the watch in water" as my local jeweller would say. Cheers!
I love how understated and subtle Invicta are 🤣🤣 the choice of the 80's Russian, leather clad, gangster
Nice video, thanks a lot for the explanations
Good vid Richard! Well explained!
Excellent quality
Richard, when air is compressed it increases in temperature. The glass is room temperature so moisture will condense on the inside and frost it.

Brilliant! Thank you so much for explaining this! Richard
Good to see you back nice watch what is the cost of your watch looks great cheer norm
Great video Richard and very informative. As somebody who used to dive it made no sense to have a watch tested (I use the word loosely) to 500+ fathoms/metres as you,d be dead anway so couldn't read the time.

Hi Rod ... Precisely my point sir! Better to have a watch that you know has been tested to 60m because yuo have seen yourself that test being conducted. Richard
@richardperrettwatchmaker, great to see that there is life after the REME. Have you ever considered doing an artical for the Craftsman magazine? I'm sure others in the Corps would find your story quite the inspiration.
60 meters is 197 feet. That's a long way down. For most recreational divers, 40 meters (130 feet) down is about as far as the vast majority can go without specialized equipment, mixed gases, training, and so on. At that depth, the pressure is about 5 times what it is at the surface.
What I have difficulty finding is a diver on a rubber strap but with an adjustable clasp like on the bracelet.
in cyprus! my country❤
One thing I don't understand about the test. Does the watch then stay pressurized inside, or will it eventually equalize to the environment?

If the watch does not "leak" it will not become pressurised internally. It will be at the pressure at which it was assembled, i.e. 1 bar, room pressure. Only faulty watches become pressurised using this testing procedure.
How did the caseback initially crack for the Invicta?

@MickeyMouse-ef4sf .... No sure! I guess I must have knocked it against a rock or something else hard and pointed! Richard
That's why I don't care for display backs.

Hi @masudaharris6435 ... they're fine I guess on a dress watch but I agree, not for a dive watch! Richard
What do you think of the Steeldive Rolex homage watch ?

Hi @propblast82nd ... not seen it I'm afraid. Richard
6bar is 50m down
its funny how people will not get a dive watch if its less than 300 meters. you are dead at 150

Nope, incorrect. Scuba record is 300+meters

Nope, free dive record ie no tanks, just one breath is around 135 metres and with tanks it's around 290 metres.
No surprise as it’s an Invicta.

Fair play to Invicta .... It was damaged before it went into the tank! Richard

Nothing wrong with invicta I have two of them and I have never had any issues with them, also you should remember that invicta are a Swiss brand but owned by the Americans and no longer have a right to market them as Swiss made. As they are now made in America but to the exact same high standards, and powered by the highly reliable Seiko NH35 automatic movement .
