In mitigance, it was the State that recommended the reduced sentence. So while she is not blameless, her blame is far from total. To impose a sentence harsher than the State recommends makes an appeal much more likely. So that D.A. needs a straightening-out as well. That said, listening to her answers brought up unpleasant memories of Claudine Gay, Bill Clinton, and van Jones. To say nothing of my nice poached-egg breakfast.

On what charge? She broke no law, or even her judicial mandate. And the D.A. who made that sentencing recommendation must share in the blame. Possibly she simply reasoned that an appeal would be much more likely if she imposed a sentence harsher than the State recommended, which might not only require the victims to testify again, but result in acquittal. Her defence of her actions, however, was painfully inept.

The kind of person who would cross that line is the kind of person who would do it any number of times. Decent people don't understand that unless they've been victimized by such people. They don't believe such people exist. They think of how they would behave if they were in those people's situation, but they would never be in those people's situation, and there's a reason for that. This judge, though, I doubt that this is her problem. I wonder what her motive is. Maybe involved in such crimes herself.
