I almost screwed this up...6 Months with Oura Ring

Oura Ring has quickly become one of my favorite gadgets ever. It’s an incredible tool for sleep tracking and health and here’s how even with those tools I almost screwed up.

As someone with an Oura ring - the big issue with the monthly payment is around ‘who owns your own health data’. This isn’t information propiertary to oura, and you’ve already paid a substantial price for the device to track it ( the stealth one you display is $550 ). It’s not ok, and a terrible precedent - we should not be ok with companies selling us the data that the devices we paid to collect it produce, and you, Jonathan, should be much more upfront about that IHMO. They bait and switched their entire customer base as well, given the subscription model is relatively new. I love their device, but this trend needs to stop, and it will only stop if creators like yourself acknowledge the problem.

Do you pay an access fee for your cell phone network? Pretty sure you do. Its no different than that and most people are okay with paying for a new phone every 2 years and the carrier and Google/Apple have all your data too and make you pay a substantially higher monthly fee. Makes it kind of silly to complain about a $6 monthly fee.

@@djorgensen3Those are entirely different concepts. Verizon as a service that you're constantly transferring data over, vs the apple watch that just collects data and uses that service to transmit. Oura is double dipping - if Apple pulled the same thing everyone would, justifiably, freak out. Oura is doing a subset of what other similar offerings do, and charging monthly fee for a bad reason. Separately, if I could use Oura to communicate with other devices, then comparing it to a communications service would make sense. It doesn't though, and there really is not a way to justify this past greed.

thats why i bough ringconn. Only paid for the device and I get the data I want. I also own an apple watch and never really had any reason to buy the smart rings with subscription since my watch can do it anyways. When ringconn came out, decided to buy it and I can now use a regular watch with the ring and still get the data I need.

Honestly I’ve been waiting for this review for a minute! I’m so glad you took your time to get hands on for 6 months (even if it was unintentional) and gave us your thoughts on the ring. I feel like sleep is the worst aspect in my life and I haven’t realized how important it is or how much of a difference it can make. I also love the idea of steering away from notifications on your face all day which is exactly why I would like something like this to keep track of my health while also being able to disconnect from media.

When I first heard about the ring, the readiness feature intrigued me the most. Getting a notification to take the day lightly after waking up from a bad sleep is just so smart and this should’ve existed on my old fitness tracker.

I've been an oura user for 2 years and I love it! I'm retired and I don't have many "pace-makers" in my life right now. This ring has made me more vigilant about my sleep and activity and it provides me with timely recommendations for my next day. I have sleep apnea and it has been very helpful in monitoring apneic episodes and O2 saturation throughout the night. I have learned to be more regular and synchronized with my unique circadian rhythm . My sleep scores have improved as a result. I bought one for my wife as well who was finding her fitbit inconvenient to keep charged an ready. I love this device! It provides unobtrusive, meaningful information for people who want non-judgmental feedback on their lifestyle.

Sleep tracking is the key feature with the Oura Ring and being that it has such a small footprint compared to wearing something like an Apple Watch to bed, it makes getting sleep data that much more comfortable. I go back and forth with whether or not to purchase the ring due to the subscription but like you said, I guess it depends on the value of the information.

As a musician, I resonate with the struggle of the creative process vs knowing when to stop. I'm very much like you and when I'm in the zone and focused I lose track of time, it's great cause I focus on a goal, but double edged sword since I don't want my sleep to be affected and in turn waking up groggy. Great video and I think this would be great to have to help analyze the effects as you did!

I've found the breathing rate and my body temperature metrics suuuuper helpful. Incidentally, I had a high reading 2 days ago and based on past experience I just knew I was going to come down with something - and I did. I've been taking it easy since and can see I'm recovering well as the numbers are getting better. Probably the only annoying thing for me is that it doesn't detect when I'm swimming. It's definitely affected my activity score as a result but it's not a deal breaker. Overall, probably one of THE best purchases I've made. The £6 a month fee feels a bit cheeky but I'm definitely getting more value from it than from my Netflix subscription 🙂

What really resonates with me while watching this video, was when you mentioned how this tool can be such a valuable resource if you actually pay attention and use it wisely. As an individual who is in his early 20’s I may think I’m invincible and nothing will hurt me not even lack of sleep. Well I realize how wrong that is, and now I’m paying more attention to my body and trying to work together with it to reconstruct my foundation of fundamental living. Also like you, I want to unplug more and more from distractions so wearing an Apple Watch isn’t so ideal anymore, especially now that it’s basically a mini phone on your wrist it’s just distracting for me.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I’ve been wanting one of these for ages. I have multiple medical issues where Oura’s metrics could provide valuable information to me and my doctor so we would have a starting point to know how to handle my care. Oura just seems to provide so much more info than an Apple Watch - and it does it seamlessly. I can’t afford to buy one of these being disabled since 2003, as well as ill since 2018, and homebound since mid-2019. I have a service dog to take care of with my very fixed income. I keep hoping Oura will get the necessary approvals that would allow doctors to prescribe one so Medicare and Medicaid insurance can pay for it - poor, elderly, ill, and disadvantaged populations need access to these types of devices as we tend to be the unhealthiest and most sleep deprived as compared with the average population. Thanks for the opportunity to win an Oura. Whoever gets one of them will have an amazing life tool at their disposal! I hope I’ll be that person - and I can be reached with the same sn as my KZread handle on Instagram and Twitter. 😉

I love the fact that the ring is so minimal and sleek compared to other fitness trackers - it would allow me to wear it every day regardless of the situation!

This is by far the best review I found online on the Oura ring

I have sleep apnea and the sleep tracking I think would be SO helpful to provide extra information to my doctor to help with my treatment.

Honestly I was thinking of getting it as a fitness tracker but now I’m gonna use it mainly as a sleep tracker. Accountability can be so nice when used correctly
