Btw couple of tips if you were to continue this: 1. Use markers instead of armorstands they are completely invisible more accurate to the position placed and there is less nbt/commonent data needed to create and target one. 2. Also since you are doing raytracing anyways to figure out where the player is placing a block you might as well replace the item frame with an spawn egg or some other entity that way you can have double slabs. 3. Fixing the z-fighting issue just a matter of making your stairs like 0.01 bigger the normal mc stairs. 4. Instead of comparing blockstates you could just compare the model data of the display entities around it. That way it doesn't matter actual block it's using for collision detection is.

they are markers! i just used basic armor stands so ppl could c what im talking about. spawn eggs make sense! i originally used which face the item frames were on which is y they were used. im not sure how comparing the model data would work since i couldnt actually set it on the item displays (they use a custom model not a normal stair model). they were all turned with the Rotation property

@@mysticatAh thanks for clarifying, Yeah using custom model data wouldn't work. I haven't played around with newest snapshots and components but with nbt you could store a custom nbt tag like {direction:1} and you could use that nbt tag to figure out the direction the stairs are facing.

"Unlike the log block over here" Mysticat sounded SO judgemental of that log saying that...

Very impressive job on the slabs and stairs! One thing that I was playing around with was using spawn eggs to spawn the display entity and then waiting a tick to place the block using a macro and that reduced the flash of seeing the placeholder block behind it. If I were to guess, I would think that an upcoming snapshot may give every block an extra, unused arbitrary block state with maybe 8 different values, which means that you could do 8 custom blocks per existing block. It's been in the suggestions for so long, and since they're doing so much "make your own custom stuff" in the recent snapshots - including specifying a block state with the components, I would be more surprised if they didn't do something like that.

I have an idea for the corner stairs. Since you are applying the model on stone stairs, you can simply check if the stone stairs is a corner stair(because there are other stairs around it so it'll become a corner stair) and then apply the model of the corner stair on top

Yeah that would work if it's always stone stairs, but issue is when you want custom stairs that can be breakable by the other tools other then a pickaxe. You would have to do that for 8x# of different collider blocks used.

Making custom items is like the first thing you learn with data packs (and modding) lol. The new snapshot where you dont have to use a knowledge book is nice though.

Man, Scar would love this. He's been wanting pastel blue blocks for ages.

I already have coarse dirt slabs: I just retextured and renamed petrified oak slabs with my resource pack lol This is really cool though, I hope mojang will eventually get around to adding non-entity solutions to adding custom blocks to the game. I think they’re trying to make datapacks into a replacement for the modding API people were hoping for, so I’m hopeful they’ll eventually add custom block functionality!

you have no idea how happy this video makes me like just the idea of there being multiple new items you can collect for the sake of collecting new items with new textures tickes my brain so much. this sends me back to 2019 when i'd spend days searching for mods that added new ores just so i could mine new ores with new textures. this is also the reason i started doing pixelart and minecraft textures

Block and item displays make *_super_* clean solutions! Back then everything was armor stands!

this is really cool! reminds me of those only one command things from when i was a kid! also you could use entity detection to fix placing blocks in the player as well as double slabs (such as attempting to give entities within a radius a potion effect and destroying the block when an entity under over or inside the block has the effect and then placing a full block if the entity is the slab) :3

If you ask me, you should make the amethyst tools a golden tools reskin as opposed to diamond, as I think amethyst is probably a pretty brittle material to make tools out of.

Also, for the stairs, could you check the blockstate of the stairs block itself before placing the display, instead of the blocks around it? Might cause some visual delay, but it might work

You should add tomatoes along with cheese Another idea I have is to have multiple steps in crafting pizza: 1. 8 bread surrounding one tomato to make "Pizza base", or if you want cheese, replace the bread directly above the tomato with cheese. 2. Smelt the pizza base to get pizza 3. Voila, you now have _cooked pizza!_

For each tool*, when they get upgraded into netherite, they should have trim with the color from which they were upgraded i.e. Nethirite Shovel with Ruby Trim

idea: make the vinewood stairs by placing oak stairs and detecting the posicion of the stair and spawning a display entity facing the same cardinal as the oak one covering it entirely, when broken the datapack detects the item it drops, kills it and spawns the corresponding item or change its data (when making a stair put an invisible small armorstand and when the block breaks detect if the armor stand is touching anything and the item drop so its the correct item because if you break a oak stair it would change)

I've used the custom model data function a lot, I'm super excited to try it with the new crafting abilities!

I do datapack stuff professionaly, love the idea. I would not use item frames, but a carrot on a stick and use Raytracing, or however it's called from there

For the stairs, could you use the stone stairs that are placed to do the checking for corners etc, then update the model based on predetermined tests?

hint: insted of spawners for custom blocks try using notebooks and jukebox.. it makes more sense… in systemzee’s server(origin realms) all cusom blocks are made through them..

I'm not sure it's possible but if a custom half-slab spawn an other block-display entity that is invisible with custom tag that fill all the block space, it would be possible to put an other armor stand 1/4 block under the item fram and look if it is inside the block display entity.

Why? I don't think Mojang will want to piss off a big chunk of the modding community by adding a bad mod loader.

You could use armor stands to as items in hand instead of item frames, it would fix the slab problem

6:15 You don't even need to use an item frame. The components system from the new snapshots allows you to change what mob a spawn egg creates, so you can go directly from item to display entity, which summons the spawner, rather than going from item frame to display entity to spawner. Saves a step. I suppose the advantage you get from using an item frame is it snaps to the block grid, whereas spawn eggs don't, but I guess it's up to preference

@@GameJam230 as far as i know, if it didn't work at one point, that was quite a while ago, since it works in versions from at least 1.17 onwards, also using the spawning display entity method can cause lag as the item frame method kills the item frame, thus preventing lag from it constantly running commands, but using a display entity directly wouldn't and also would prevent the block from being broken.

@@SomeGuyNamedJJ idk, maybe I just couldn't find it back then, I just know they removed the generic spawn_egg item ID and replaced it with a unique ID for every mob. Also, an item frame doesn't stop it from constantly running commands just because you kill it, the game still needs to know WHEN to kill it. No matter what method you use, the game still needs to know when the physically solid block is gone so it knows the player broke it and it should kill the display entity, and that will be the case regardless of if you use an item frame, a block display, or some other obscure method. If the game doesn't constantly ask the display block "hey, is the solid block you're covering still there?", it has no way of answering "yes" and deleting itself. The only alternative I could think of, which is probably how it should be done anyway, would be to use a predicate to track when the player breaks the block used as the solid foundation, triggering an effect to ultimately kill the display, but that would work just as well with a block display as an item frame. However, since suggesting the block display entity, I did realize there is ANOTHER issue with it that item frames don't have- block display entities block your hits, so you wouldn't be able to mine the block through it like you could with an item frame display.

am i the only person that has knotised that mysticat is souding more and more feminin from their really old videos, i dont know why and im not going to guess or make any claims, but if it is what i think it is, well done on your voice training :) sounds amazing.

hopefully with their updates favoring datapack makers they'll just give us a way to make custom blocks retain their data when placed so these custom blocks won't cause lag or be scuffed

OMG that custom block workaround was so smart!

For the corner stairs, couldn't you copy the state of the regular stair you spawned ? - place the frame (or spawn egg as some else suggested) - place the stair using your 6 armor stands system - look at how the block adapts to surrounding stairs - place your block entity accordingly - propagate step 3 to all adjacent blocks
