I love the Polikarpov I-16. It, the Boeing P-26 Peashooter, and the Dewoitine D-500/D-510 are my favourite interwar pursuit planes. I've always had a soft spot for those models.

Lovely aircraft!

I love how the pilot had time to 'reflect on his life choices' at the end.

I was half expecting the little Russian fighter to win this engagement, felt sad when it didn't work out.

That open cockpit must have been a joy at that altitude. Unbelievable.

I once read that the switch from open cockpit to closed cockpit was opposed by the older pilots because they said they could 'smell the exhaust gases' of enemy planes, and follow them like a hound dog. How cool is that? People actually did that, at 20,000'.

@@gglen2141 The I-16, in-fact, originally had a enclosed cockpit, but because it had to be sled forward to open, it was basically impossible to do so in flight, so pilots just choose to lock the cockpit open and in later models it was omitted all together.

@@gglen2141 Same sort of thing with the SE5 in the First Unpleasantness; the "glasshouse" was hated by pilots, removed in the field, and eventually scrapped in production models

The Messerschmidt BF-109E outclassed the Soviet I-16 Polikarpov. The 109E top speed of 346 mph topped the I-16 top speed of about 290 mph. The 109E performed better at high altitudes. Clearly the I-16 was obsolescent by the start of WW2 and the Soviet High Command became aware of this quickly. Soviet response proved swift and effective. Newer fighter planes, the Yak series and Lagg series and MiG 3 all rose to the occasion. By war's end the Yak-9 could reach 410 mph and the Lagg-7 maxed out at 420 mph. Armament was just adequate, one 20mm ShVak cannon and two, 12.7mm heavy machine guns for the Yak-9 and two, 20mm cannon for the Lagg-7. Lagg-7 pilots did complain that the two, 20mm cannon were insufficient and two more 20mm cannon should be added, if not, at least two, 12.7mm machine guns. Even the Japanese A6M5d Zero-sen design achieved this.

External view for some reason slows it down or does not show all of them. You can see from few rare first person views of 109 that they work properly there.

Good Russian… stayed with his plane even after bailing out

In VR, this is the most fun Plane to Fly Sadly, unless its a turnfight, not the best tho´ would have loved for the little donkey to prevail

I’m see a box hasegawa 109g 1/72 and the decoration is caganico fighter killing a polikarpov 16 white camouflage.... 27 red ....is my Favorite fighter....! And my favor airplane

It was so cold in the open cockpit I-16's, the Russian pilots would light an open fire to keep warm lol, man they were tough.

Bf 109E, so not a new one.

In gunship sequel ww2 vr I've using the i-16 and it's a menace in the air. I out turn anything thats chasing me basically once they finally get there sights lined up I've already shot down 2 or 3 of their teammates

@Michael Ellis the i 16 is more maneuverable than the bf 109 because it is slower than the bf 109 to chase an i 16, it needs to decrease its speed which causes the bf 109 to lose maneuverability. besides that normally the i 16 has more maneuverability than the bf 109 normally. (google translate)
