i saw one of these flying at an airshow in masterton in new zealand a few years ago, have to say it has the most unique sound i think i have ever heard, sounds like a flying tractor at low level.

The first "fiery" battering ram was performed on June 22, 1941 by the 27-year-old senior lieutenant Pyotr Chirkin of the 62nd Attack Aviation Regiment. Chirkin sent the pounded I-153 to a column of German tanks approaching the city of Stry (Western Ukraine). In total for the war years, his feat was repeated more than 300 people.

That is one sweet looking old bird. Few single row radial engines have a whisper like that. Makes me wonder if it's a Pratt-Whitney Wasp converted to a Soviet design. Have a model of her, and would love to give it a thorough look over to see the details so I could include them in the build. Thanks for sharing.

@Treetop64 I believe they did. It's a pneumatic starter. Electric pump charges up air bottle with compressed air and then uses single burst of that air to crank the engine. They also used compressed air for gear and flap operations.

АШ 62ир- редукторный. Ещеи ставился на Ли-2. М 62-прямой, только на истребители.. Но и М 62, и АШ 62- это американский Wright Cyclone.

You are right. It has a similar version of engine. Original I-153 equiped a M-62 engine(ASh-62). This plane equiped ASh-62IR engine - version for transport aviation.

@tiverton I see. Wasn't aware that the I-153 had flaps, though... Oh, and that's an electrically powered inertia wheel starting the engine in this vid, not compressed air. You are right about the pneumatic gear, though. The original I-153s used in the Soviet Union used a Hucks starter; an auxiliary power unit mounted on a truck that connected a crankshaft to the propeller hub of the aircraft to crank the engine.

Planes Polikarpov I-15 and I-15 bis were used during the invasion of Poland in 1939 ? Because i'm still meeting this information ,but there are no exact data on their use in battle ? Once I got to know that I-153 was used against Poland, but I do not know if it's true.

Pilot musiał mieć specjalną maskę bo inaczej od spalin bywykitował.Dlatego piloci jak zdejmowali masz i gogle zawsze mieli okopcone twarze..to efekt spalin..druga rzecz przy trafieniu w silnik pilot był ciężko poparzony olejem silnikowym o temp powyżej 120 stopni Celcjusza..pozdrawiam..

Хорошая была машина. Но лет 80 назад. А еще раньше были хорошие Ньюпоры, Сопвичи, Фоккеры, Таубе, цеппелины. А летательные аппараты Архимеда и вовсе были шедеврами, опередившими свое время. Понятие "сарказм" можно найти в словарях Брокгауза и Ефрона, Даля и Ожегова. Кстати, на дворе 2021 год. 29 июня.

Why are 2 of my favorite planes nicknamed 'Seagull'? First the Polikarpov I-153 'Чаика' and then the Soko G-2 'Galeb'
wow,you catch the view of that thing from the cockpit..talk about having to S-Taxi....peripheral vision on take off and landing. Just plain cool.ok Bad Ass :)

Engine M-62 Shvetsoff, lycense of Wright Cyclone. Soviet planes has an american and french (Hispana Suisa) engines.
Planes Polikarpov I-15 and I-15 bis were used during the invasion of Poland in 1939 ? Because i'm still meeting this information ,but there are no exact data on their use in battle ? Once I got to know that I-153 was used against Poland, but I do not know if it's true.

Pilot musiał mieć specjalną maskę bo inaczej od spalin bywykitował.Dlatego piloci jak zdejmowali masz i gogle zawsze mieli okopcone twarze..to efekt spalin..druga rzecz przy trafieniu w silnik pilot był ciężko poparzony olejem silnikowym o temp powyżej 120 stopni Celcjusza..pozdrawiam..

Gladiator - 338 km/h maximum speed, Chaika - 366 km/h maximum sped. Chaika radial 1000 h.p engine, gladiator - 800 h.p engine. Chaika 1700 kg, gladiator 2000 kg
