I actually bought one yesterday, but only seeing your review this morning. The driving position and controls are so well thought out and executed, was my personal favourite thing about the car. The 600km range and particularly the very fast charging were what put it top of my research list. I drove the Kia EV6 and the Ioniq 5 too, but bought the 6. Another nice touch is the seat automatically moving back once you open the door to exit the car, unexpected but totally useful and makes you wonder why all cars don't.

Are the memory seats a spec up? Starts around £47k in 🇬🇧 going up to about £55k max… good value for that range and charging ability, compared to competitors.

A really good review of a superb new EV from Hyundai. I really like the exterior and interior design of the car and on this basis alone it went straight onto the shortlist of EV's to replace my Kona when the lease ends in a few months time. The efficiency of the Ioniq 6 is brilliant and I think you're right to say that many drivers will manage truly excellent real world range. I'm waiting to get behind the wheel as demonstrators are not yet available in mainland UK ....... but hopefully they'll start to arrive very soon.

I got a Signature trim a week ago and love it- the efficiency is great - definitely aero shape helps. Great to drive , the driver assistance systems work really well, though as you say the warning “bings” are very annoying and if you do turn them off, the whole speed limit signs system stops. Great to have heat pump as standard even on the base model.

At this time of year, not ideal temperatures I should get around 400km on a full charge, though that is being careful.

Have seen 2 in the flesh around here in last few days: a white and a red. For me the red was the better looking colour by far. Love the look of the car and if I was doing sufficient mileage and had to change my car tomorrow then I think that this would be top of the list or thereabouts. As things stand though, no way can I justify that kind of outlay. Still, bravo to Hyundai on producing a proper, low-slung, efficient car. Would hope to see more models in this vein but sadly the ever-present SUV/CUV mania may not permit it.

From a looks perspective, I saw this car 3 months ago on a road in Sydney Australia. When I saw it - I thought wow - that is something very new. Now with a few reviews by the press, I have gone from ugly duckling back to wow! - definitely some Porsche Panamera in the front and 911 in the rear. Tick, Tick and Tick to Hyundai for having the balls to put this on the road. I'm a year or 2 away from an EV - if Hyundai keep this up - I can see a Hyundai EV in the driveway.

Very nice review and the first review where I was impressed with a Hyundai. I like the little extras you get with this car over the starkness of a Model 3. No hud, no overhead view in the 3, those kind of things grate on you a bit but when they released the 3, they had no competition and no incentives to add these things. It's fast becoming a competitive market and Tesla will need to offer more. Just saw a review of the ID.7 and that wowed me. I want to see head to head on VW and Hyundai soon.

Yes best hud I have seen on this class of car and excellent 360 degree cameras, but they are not on the lower models. Have to pay €65k to get them..🙄

@@eagerv Well that sucks! Kinda looks like the high price will take it out of the Tesla 3 or Y market. I don't see a big seller in a 65k price range as most people consider that fantasy stuff. Wouldn't be surprised if the VW ID.7 is also in that range. Tesla wins again! Even though it's relatively starkly appointed, a 40k Model 3 will sell big and will satisfy most people. I get into 3 and the only thing I do is select the playlist I want. I never have to lock or unlock it or set an emergency brake and seldom use the brakes whatsoever. Driving a 3 is next level transportation.

​@@Rick9482 True but the rumours state a new version of the model 3 is on the way so are they just trying to get rid of old stock? Nothing more annoying than buying a car and then the newer version comes out a month later. Be interesting to see what happens to the price then.

I enjoyed your review thanks and just to note reviews don’t seem to notice how intrusive these “bongs” actually are in these new EV’s. I bought one of these cars six months ago and the bongs never stop…it constantly bongs if you put on/off the cruise control, open the door while charging, one km over the speed limit, move into a different speed limit zone, also you have to keep moving the steering wheel or it constantly warns you to put your hands back on the steering wheel by “bonging”. On most trips it warns you to “take a break” if the car wheels go near the roads studs! There appears to be an oppression with bongs!

Blame EU regs unfortunately. Most can be turned off as you know but having to do it every time is 🤦🏼

Now this is the kind of efficiency I was expecting from Hyundai. I would be looking at the Ioniq 5, the days of stepping down into a have gone. Looking forward to when you test the N version.

@@Edvard.Munchkin "hideous"? What ever is "hideous" about this car? Personally I have loved the appearance of it, their style and its design features right from the start. When people have commented that it looks much better in real life than in a photo or video, I virtually have my finger hovering over the 'buy' button. Will be buying one within a few weeks.

I sat into one of these in my local dealer. I’m 6 feet tall and with the seat on the floor I still felt like I was sitting on rather than in. Definitely reminds me of an old 964 at the back. Looks better in the metal but still a like it or loathe it car. 4 dots in the middle of the steering wheel is international morse code for H.

What they should instead have done is put the number of dots on the wheel to correspond to the model number “5” or “6” and had no numeral five or six on the rear of the car. Further, I believe Hyundai should have took the electrification of their brand as an opportunity to brand their all-electric cars going forward entirely under the “Ioniq” marquee without mention of “Hyundai” or the Hyundai badge anywhere, like how Volvo have Polestar. A new Ioniq front badge. Perhaps some kind of electrical symbol ⚡️just done in a classy design. What car do you drive? Polestar 2. What car do you drive? Ioniq 5. Clean and simple. I think “Ioniq” was strong enough a name to carry the brand going forward.

Great option by Hyundai for those wanting a sportier, rangier Ioniq5, but for me it’s a bit too compromised in the boot area. I’d guess the rear headroom clearance could be an issue too? I did see pictures of one previously in a dark red colour, and thought that looked amazing to be fair. I hope it does well!

@@maxbiaggi30 - yeah, on closer look the back row doesn’t look too bad. I think the boot is the only really weak area… but this makes the car useable for the majority of buyers.

Thanks Nobby, enjoyed that. A lovely car imo, always prefer a lower aerodynamic car, I even like the looks..🙂. Have already driven the same model as you tested and as a Tesla Model 3 owner I was impressed. Yes a little more refined and a little roomier, but not a huge amount in it. However the base Ionic 6 is significantly more expensive at about €50k incl delivery, compared with the base Tesla at just over €40k. And the Model 3 is a lot more powerful, better equipped and better range. And compared to the Ioniq 6 you tested at about €65k you can now get a Performance Model 3 for under €54k. Love the car and I hope it is very successful, but I think price could be a problem.

Yep, you have covered a lot of very valid points. I think it’s just a case of brand heritage here that will drive some conquest sales. Brand awareness for Hyundai is so strong in Ireland also, I’m not sure Tesla can compete with that aspect but M3P, I’m a big fan.

TM3 is not better equipped, sorry... It does have more power, but I think for 99% people Ioniq6 performance will really be more than enough... And the difference in range is very small. When it comes to equipment, Tesla does not have V2L (ability to connect electric grill or even lawn mower to the car), instrument cluster, HUD, Apple Car Play/Android Auto, ambient lighting, physical buttons, adjustable headrest, lights on the roof, and some other things.

@@Lascarnn Check the spec of the base Ioniq 6 at €49k against the base Tesla Model 3 at €40k. And wltp of 429km v 491km. And 151hp v about 280hp. Sorry, I don't think I am wrong.. But as I said I like the Ioniq 6.

@@eagerv we’d have to see a real world range test to compare those ranges properly. Wonder if Bjorn has done his yet? I like that his range tests are exclusive to the motorway/freeway because that’s the only time where range really matters. Around town range is virtually meaningless. Therefore mixed-driving range tests are also the wrong approach. Bjorn’s tests are the best around. Wish he did his slower test at 60 mph instead of 56 mph though, because on the motorway I don’t drive fast, but I do drive 60, and it’s not always easy to extrapolate mathematically from 55 to 60… so you’re left guesstimating. Alas.

Do the tinted windows come standard? Because Hyundai doesn't have that option on their website

I think ID 7 will blow this out of the water. Looks will be very decisive and personally I prefer the conservative look of the VW, also, prices are earmarked to be similar, and the base ID7 gets a longer range than the base ioniq 6 for possibly the same money. Thinking of changing my Passat next year and will test drive both (if ID7 is here by then)

Just look at the price of base ID.5 with 77kWh battery and 174hp motor - from €62k. No way ID.7 will cost any less.

Hate to tell you but the base model ID7 will be 67K and anything with a decent spec will be 70+ Honestly at that money just buy a BMW i4

we are moments away from cars reporting on their drivers to the authorities. I wouldn't take it off the lot without turning all of the beep warnings off. We have an Ionic 1 hybrid and until the EV infrastructure is actually there (in the USA) and they figure out the range problems for cold climates, I will not by a full EV. I love the hybrid...600 miles on a tank of gas and 45-60 MPG most of the time.

Please say that again...?! 14,5 kWh at speed of... 95 km/h? Amazing.

Great review. BUT its a "by committee" design. Everyones fave bits of other cars nailed on, but its way overdone and awkward looking. Performance and tech are excellent, but I could never live with the look of it

I've been waiting for this car for years. My first EV was an ioniq 28. Test drove it last week and and then went and bought a Tesla. Don't get me wrong, I loved the ioniq (apart from hard plastics in back). But when push comes to shove, there is no where this car is worth €20,000 fore than a Tesla model 3

I need more time with the ID.7 to be honest but the price of this will be better. The boot in the 7 is a lot bigger though. On looks, probably the VW but there’s an awful lot as standard on the 6.

@Nobby On Cars so both are good cars. One is lighter, more efficient and with more standard kit which is typical for Korean cars and the other one is German - heavy, specious and luxurious.

It does look good in black. It looks god awful in silver though! 👀The interior is it’s best addition big step up from ioniq 5, I just wish they did a liftback hatchback instead of that boot would’ve made it far more practical and appealing.

Got up close in a showroom.....a big old bus !

I don't know, front somehow remind me of the old Hyundai coupe, one word to describe it "outdated". The only saving grace is the rear

Not sure how I feel about the ass end but otherwise its seemingly a great car.

Rear of the car is nice. Front is very bland, easy facelift in a few years.

New Tesla 3 coming later this year.....it'll be a price war, which I think Tesla will win. I'd prefer the Ioniq tbh, but as it'll be a company car, money talks more than heart.

I am not keen on the looks, it will be interesting to see one in reality.

It 100% won't "deliver 614kms" (maybe down a 614km long hill in 24 degrees heat...... yada yada yada) Please say quoted WLTP range 614kms instead Nobby........lets say it like it is. Also, if that €48k is net of the (current) grant......please point that out as business users get no grant.

The EPA combined rated range on the AWD 77kWh is shown as 270 miles (435km). Since that's combined you can safely take off 10% if going at highway speeds and since you'd almost never drive 100-0 you are going to charge when you get to 10% so now you have 20% off the top... The first leg real world highway trip would be 348km. After that you only fast charge to 80% which means you drop another 20% off the original, so every leg after your first would be up to 261km. 384 to start and 261 per leg of a long trip would be a much closer real world estimate of range

Tesla is all about cost cutting, half the reason why it's got a soviet era design of having nothing in the cabin. Physical buttons and it's wiring gets expensive. Also personally I would want a HUD so I don't have to move my eyes off the road, which is crazy to say but yeah. Big iPad and whatnot distracts drivers far more, shocking, even more so when 98% of the cars functionality is behind that touchscreen.

Hate the look of it, boot should be hatchback. It's a shame because the ioniq 5 looks awesome and the concept car on which it's based looks futuristic

I love it - but - if they just had given it a huge tailgate! It is useless for me with that stupid little trunk, I can fit my bicycle into my little old HyundaI Ioniq EV...

For me it's very bland.i'd be looking at the bmw i4 35 too(70 kw) @ around 65k.Have an ioniq 5 myself since January-love it!

What ever about efficiency as being the reason for its looks but that has to be in my opinion one of the ugliest cars on the road its up there with the Fiat Mulitpla for me.

Tesla quality is still an important issue

What I don't understand why vendors keep playing with EV designs. They already have design proven by years, and somehow they come up with this. Another example is Mercedes, which made the EQ line look like Honda Civic 2009.

It’s hideous. Somewhat like a squashed / melted beetle. No thanks.

I just can’t get over the design, especially the front. Looks better in black than silver but still, no, not for me ☹️

Has something in common with Tesla model 3, they are both ugly. The looks of this are awful, and it will not age well.

Pity there are so many intrusive beeps and bongs…telling you to take a break every 10kms and either cannot be turned off or have to be silenced every time you drive this car also very average infotainment system and the sat navigation is rubbish. The heater defaults to level 8 fan every time, blowing you out of your seat and overall practicality and build quality are only average.

Ah lads, it’s genuinely a hideously looking car. Harks back to the awful styling of early 00 Hyundais
