This is a video on how to change your headlight bulbs in a Hyundai Elantra. This video might also help you on the Hyundai Sonata as the cars are similar in many ways. WARNING: Changing out the headlights in a Hyundai Elantra is a big pain. My video includes a rant to Hyundai at the end of it because of this. You don't have to watch the rant unless you want to and I have a warning to let you know when I'm about to go into the rant.
Make sure to wear gloves (don't touch the bulbs when you install them) as it will reduce the bulbs life as the oil from your skin will make the bulb heat up.

I tried Eric's method but couldn't make enough room. Instead I found it pretty easy to first remove the battery (takes 1 minute) then move the fuse box (it is just one bolt and one nut that took 1 minute). Not nearly as hard as I first thought. With the fuse box out of the way there is plenty of room to reach in, move the other wires, etc. The whole job took 5 minutes this way.
Thank you! Just had to change my sons bulb. This was a lifesaver!

What a huge help this was thank you! My 1st time doing anything to my car besides washing it!! Lol It was fast and easy for me!!
I did managed to remove the housing but thank you for the video. It was very helpful
Dude! Thanks so much for the tutorial! I'm glad it was only my R light that went out! 😂. I've never done anything under the hood before and you were easy to understand.

That's why I make these videos because if you watch some mechanics do it, they sometimes use technical language that some don't understand. The more you learn the better you get. You're welcome
Came over from the web, where I was watching your video, to say thank you. Thankfully I only need to change out the passenger side bulb! D@mn, these hyandais are not owner friendly. In Feb, nasty weather, had a flat tire, bad enough, went to change the tire and there was only a canister of a substance like fix a flat, and a convoluted mini "compressor" box, with two separate tubing hook ups, to put together, and that is the manufacturers big idea, stock, for "fuel economy" HA.. after getting the contraption put together in the rain, it FAILED, and I found out they expire rather quickly, need to be replaced for 200.00 from a dealership, and if they do work, they only repair minor punctures to tread, and you can't drive over 35 mph, less than 50 miles, and tire is ruined. WT# !!! I used an air compressor and aired up enough to get to the local tire store where they only charged 15.00 to repair the flat... It's a racket. My working son bought it for me to commute the 100 mi RT to care for his baby, and he assumed there was a spare in the trunk..like a normal car 😂 Thank you, esp for the little details you added, it really helps!

You would do better to buy the spare tire kit than refill that thing. We traded this car in for a Toyota Highlander this Summer
Great video! I'm about to do this myself. Wish me luck
It also helps getting the bulb in and tightened if you are looking in from the front to see the tabs align.
thankYOU!!!THANK you!!!, I find MYself rather mechanically inclined,,I popped the hood, loosened a couple bolts, and said 'what the %#@%¥!!! My son suggested itinerary, and wah-lah!!!! thank you for taking the time to make this video,,,,,dam I miss my 59 Chevy pickup!!
Thanks to you, I will not get a ticket. Really appreciate this video!

Does anyone know how to replace the front signal/parking light/blinker???
Great Job! I agree with you 100% with the last comment , nobody should take it to the dealer, because that is what they want you to do.

GOOD DAY SOMEONE CAN HELP ME I WANT TO REPLACE THE ORIGINAL LIGHTS BY LEDS I NEED THE MODEL OF ALL THE BULBS HEADLIGHS IS H11 BUT THE OTHERS DO NOT KNOW IT THANKS
I found that I had to remove the two bolts holding the fender (drivers side) and also remove the body screws holding the grille. Once I did that I was able to wiggle the lamp assembly out. Took a half an hour but I figure if their is a next time I can shave about 10 minutes off. The passenger side you practically have to stand on your head to see what you are doing, but not near as difficult.
You can easily pull the headlight out after unscrewing the three bolts. There is a small metal tab in the top of the bumper that might cause a snag, nothing a flathead screwdriver can't remedy. A little wiggle and pull and it pops out.

Cheers mate. I did what you said and it was bloody easy 👍
I looked this up in my manual and SpecD Video and basically the front bumper has to be removed . There's a 10 mm bolt in the front fender , covered be a black fender liner . Plus some clips under the bumper . Glad you were successful .
@EricDIY

You do not need to remove a bolt or the front bumper. You just need to wiggle the light housing free after removing the 3 screws that hold it that are on top. Then change the bulb, put it back on the car, align, and tighten the 3 screws for the housing.
thank you...I was going nuts
I bought a p.o.s car like this but 2002 and you got to take the battery out on the left side and then the wire to actually hold the wire for bulb.
Thanks for sharing.
took headlight assembly out on drivers side no problem just takes a little playing with but does work and make much simpler.....

Yes it just takes a little maneuvering but it does come out pull on the panel a bit like I said a little maneuvering and stuff and it does come
I changed it this way, the real pain is the wires inside the housing that go over the bulb making it hard to get out. A simple hook pick tool can pull those wires up and over the bulb, and that makes it a lot easier. Didn't take more then 15 minutes.
Hey man don’t know if you look at this video still but the reason your light fixture didn’t come out is cause there’s these little plastic clips that hold it on the bottom, just gotta manhandle it a bit and it pops out 5 minute fix I have the same exact model and year
Hey, tried and no major issues on the drivers side. The replacement takes two 10mm at the front and a 12mm at the top. No additional tools required. It takes wiggling room. By removing the assembly you can remove the bulb and install without touching the glass. Thank you though for putting the video together... It was still helpful.

Hey, thanks for the comment! I tried your way and it took about 3 minutes and a whole lot fewer cuss words! Thanks!
Thanks for the video but, all you have to do to replace driver side bulb is unscrew the two 10mm screws, and the one 12mm. Then pull up from bottom of assembly and it’ll come out no problem just a little wiggle.
Great vid thank you 🙏🏼

Wow I can't believe you were able to change it this way... there's not even enough room for the cover to slip thru! My headlight came off super easy, the trick is wiggling and pulling up at the bottom of the headlight and it comes out very easily...pulling at the top will not help... there's little tabs that lock it in at the bottom, that's where you have to work from... getting back in and lined up correctly is a bit tricky but took maybe 15 minutes and I was done... this guy is a magician to be able to squeeze that bulb in without it breaking ....almost a miracle.. I wouldn't recommend trying this method at home!!!

I finally was able to get the housing out when replacing these Silverstar Ultras after a year of use (my wife kept them on all the time while also using daytime running lights). It is difficult for the average person to get it out.

I watched this video before taking on the drivers side bulb. As mentioned earlier the housing will come out as the other viewer stated, but getting the housing back on will frustrate you to the point of wanting to just buy a new car. It definitely took some finesse. Thanks for the video.

Yes I am glad I’m not the only Elantra owner with this peeve! It literally gives me anxiety knowing it’s time to replace the bulbs! And guess what? That time is today! FML! I’ve done it just a few times prior to today but those times did take so much out of me to get it back in. The very last time was about 2 years ago I’m shocked my Philips 4500K bulbs lasted this long but no more cheap halogens for me, and no more HID with ballasts and relay connectors! I bought an AUXBEAM H11 6000K LED bulbs which is a direct plug just as if it were a halogen bulb, super EZ! ... but haven’t put it in yet as this is how much I am dreading that driver side! But it’s time haha! Thanks for the great tips about unscrewing the screws above the grill area. Time to face this minor (but a pain)issue at what Hyundai purposely did to ensure more business! They’re not getting my money for simple light bulb services that’s for sure:)
Preciate that most definitely

Solid video, and the effort is definitely appreciated! But you really did work a lot harder on that driver's side light than you needed to. The entire headlight assembly can be removed fairly easily with a little bit of wiggle. You gotta give it some tugs, but you should have no issues getting it out with only removing those three bolts (two 10mm, and one 12mm socket). Once you get it loose, pull out the electrical plug, then take out the entire assembly. Makes it a breeze to replace this bulb. And getting the assembly back in is just as easy. BTW I decided upon the Philips Longlife Ecovision H11. Got em for $15 per bulb on Amazon. My wife's 2013 had 120k before the first low beam burned out. So I'm hoping these last the rest of the way. Even though this was one of the easiest headlight bulb replacements I've ever performed, I still have no interest in doing this again! Better than my '04 TSX where I hadda completely remove both headlight assemblies in order to change both bulbs AND needed to lower the front bumper in order to do so. That was not a pleasant job!
Thanks.

@@EricDIY it wasn't too bad after some trial and error, but I may try that or removing the fuse box next time
ALERT: I planned to replace the bulbs per the video. Took my 2014 Elantra to my mechanic for brake work. Dennis saw the bulbs on the seat. When done he said "No Charge" for the bulbs. He showed me how he reached back, removed the round covers, and replaced both. Not sure if his hands are smaller than normal. He said no need to remove the headlight. Took him 2 mins. He removed the battery.

Hahaha when you said, 'ever so gently, pull out on the housing and it should pull right out' I was laughing cuz I just was trying to get mine out and had the car bouncing up and down I was tugging on it so hard. Didn't succeed, either. I don't know how you pulled off getting that bulb out. In mine, there's barely enough room to get a set of chop sticks in there. For some reason, my layout is just slightly different from yours, on the touring model. Barely, but different. I see other comment that says pull from bottom, on mine there is no way to pull from bottom. Fixture is flush with the bumper, nothing to grab/pull.
I had to do it exactly like you did and even said the same: its a fucking pain in the ass that light next to the fuse box. Almost take out the bumper man...but if you dit it im doing too lmao. I saw other videos and is easy, mine is 2012 and is hard to access that room with your hand
I was hoping for a straight forward video on how to change the driver's side, but it's not. That's not because Eric doesn't know what he's doing, rather Hyundai really screwed all their owners on this headlight thing. I too am more on the mechanically inclined side. On mine, the passenger side burned out so I purchased a bulb kit. I had intentions of changing both sides while I was at it. I actually changed the passenger-side bulb in the dark, just by feel. When I went to the driver's side and thought, "WTF"! So I decided to leave it until I had some time. Sure enough, a few days later, the driver's side burned (what timing, huh?) so now I had to change the bulb anyway. Thanks to this video, it's confirmed that it's not just me. It really is quite impossible for an average man to change this light bulb since men have much bigger hands. Luckly for me, I have a woman engineer working for me and she helped me change this light bulb. Even she barely got her hands squeezed in there and finished the job. So any girls reading this, you have a better chance at changing the driver's side than your husbands or boyfriends. Like Eric, I didn't feel like taking off more parts than necessary and make an entire day disassembly and reassembly. Thanks Eric.

You have to pull out the headlight housing with 3 screws. The housing comes out for me now but it took a while to jiggle it out of there after taking off the three screws.

Getting back to this comment, I went change the rear brakes today and got everything undone except for the rotor and that's only because it's attached by two screws to the car. Problem is the screws won't come out. My wife is now driving for two more days on a bad brake pad until I get an impact driver from Amazon to get the screws out. The screws are only there so they could get the tires on faster at the assembly plant...not a happy Hyundai owner

The bulb size for the headlight on a Hyundai Elantra is H11. I'm about to review a new LED Headlight for the Hyundai Elantra so you might want to wait for that review. I am also updating this installation video to show you how to do it a little easier (even though I think Hyundai still has a terrible design)

It was very hard to do but I did get it the next time I had to change bulbs. I changed them to LED headlights the time after this so I won't have to do it again for a while. It was still rediculous trying to get it off. I never had as much trouble getting a headlight off as I did with this car.

The Sylvania Basic H11 is a better value.
@EricDIY
7 жыл бұрын
I prefer bulb life. The Sylvania basic dims over time in my experience. However, it is a good, durable halogen bulb. The Silverstar Ultra provide a lot more light but only last about a year/bulb (my wife ran the daytime run lights all the time so maybe that had something to do with it). I prefer led bulbs for longevity and brightness which I am trying to have her consider the next time we have to replace the Silverstar Ultras.
Toyota Yaris is worse, got to remove the whole front end to get to the headlight assembly screws.
