Hyperion: Reusable Landing Zone 1
Ғылым және технология
Philip Bono's impressive single-stage-to-orbit design from the 1960s, the "Hyperion," captivated the aerospace industry with its innovative features. This remarkable vehicle, equipped with a plug-nozzle engine for ascent and re-entry heat shield, was capable of transporting 18,100 kg of payload or up to 110 passengers to orbit in just 45 minutes, or to any point on earth.
One unique aspect of the Hyperion was its launch method - a horizontal takeoff and vertical landing (HTVL) sled that provided a 300 m/s boost to the vehicle before it ascended to orbit. The sled was 3 km long with a straight course followed by a 1 km ascent up a mountainside, providing a 3 G acceleration.
This sled launch mode not only reduced the SSTO's dry mass, but it also made the Hyperion fully reusable, ideal for flights from inland sites, where fuel tanks wouldn't have to be dropped during flight. The Hyperion traveled at an astonishing 1100 km/h as it left the sled at the end of the 3 km launch rail.
However, the Hyperion's launch system required a 1.7 km high mountain, which made Douglas, the manufacturer, view the concept mainly as an experimental vehicle. Despite this, Douglas projected the cost to develop the Hyperion at $1.5 billion ($8 billion in 1999 economic conditions), with a cost per seat of $3000, or $15000-16000 in 1999.
In conclusion, Philip Bono's Hyperion design was a groundbreaking creation in the aerospace industry, showcasing the possibilities of a single-stage-to-orbit vehicle with unique takeoff and landing capabilities. Although it was viewed as experimental, the Hyperion remains a remarkable achievement in the history of space exploration.

Pretty good animation.
Awesome work. Love the movie time ending.
That shot of it in orbit-beautiful.
Excellent work.
The sound waves on that planet travels at the speed of light. Which im pretty certain would rip your face off along with the rest of your skin, muscles and bones.....while also creating an instant black hole.

Thought of everything, and funded none of it. Some of it is just now actually happening as a weird side-effect of runaway capitalism.

I love the idea of the landing rockets being in a ring around a domed heat shield, wonder how effect that would be IRL

stoke space is doing something similar for their 2nd stage. check out their hop test they did a while back, it’s really awesome
Excellent. Even the change in the sound pitch as it gets closer to the ground is spot on. You should do a video with the Rogallo wing being used.

Yes, I remember this, it was during JFK's second term back in 66'. Funny times, as the president had his wife and mistress in the WH while he was self appointed Chief of Staff for the space agency. We never thought that the program will go that far. Funny times, we even had Elvis to sing duet with Alice Cooper.

We have spent billions of dollars and many decades studying SSTO concepts and so we know a LOT about them. AND WHAT WE KNOW IS THAT THEY ARE NO DAMNED GOOD.

The sound on that planet breaks the conservation of momentum and would leave Einstein scratching his head, since the sonic booms travel at light speed. Instantaneous black hole lol

Pretty good. The controlled slow descent and the accompanying crackle of the hot engine's gases against the relatively cold atmosphere. One thing you (might have) missed.. as the descent of the space condo cleared the firey stage suddenly there's a clear black and white picture of the ground based operations and support enclave . What kind of camera did he have to see🎉 the ground . Came on!

Nixon made a reasonable choice at the time, choosing the space shuttle over the Apollo applications project. In retrospect, the shuttle did not turn out as promised, but that's not his fault. If you are upset about the last few Apollo missions being canceled as am I, that was more congressional than anything else. If I could go back and change these particular decisions I probably would. A lot more could have been accomplished with the already existing Saturn and related infrastructure. The shuttle had a lot of nice technological spin-offs but we paid way too much for it, but I suppose that's traditional by this point.

Actually look at some of the 1950's, early 60's and such science fiction movies/ TV shows, the vertical launch plus vertical landing was not uncommon. The ramp type sled take off was also in used in a early Science Fiction movie.
