One of the saddest moments we have experienced in a long time on safari was at Lion Sands Narina Lodge in Kruger National Park. During our morning safari, we turned a corner and saw a female giraffe in the open. Taking our time to observe, our guide Drew remarked, "It looks like placenta hanging out from her backside." We immediately realized she had given birth. Little did we know what we were in for. Upon closer investigation, we discovered that her calf was very underdeveloped, likely stillborn. As we realized it, a hyena peeked its head out from the thickets, leading to an hour-long back-and-forth between the hyena and the giraffe. She tried her best to keep him away from her calf. Eventually, she realized that nothing could be done, moved off, and the hyena took the opportunity to drag the carcass into the shrub to feed. A sad moment, yet one that speaks volumes about nature, where nothing goes to waste.
