Are you struggling with organic chemistry? Download my free ebook "10 Secrets To Acing Organic Chemistry" here: leah4sci.com/orgo-ebook/
Many times in your organic chemistry reactions you will notice that the intermediate carbocation product shifts position. In this video, I explain exactly why and how this shift happens by looking at specific examples and mechanisms explaining both the hydride shift and alkyl/methyl shift phenomenon.

    ***** Oh, a whole bunch of stuff...chirality, prochirality, reaction mechanisms, bond disassociation energies...you name it. The most difficult parts so far are learning all of the different reagents and reactions involving alkenes/alkynes not to mention 'seeing' chiral molecules in 3d in your mind. These videos really help out a lot...I couldn't imagine how it would be 10 years ago and I'd have to go to the library just to read up on these topics. Thanks for taking the time and effort to post these videos. I know how thankless doing something like that can be, but if it's worth anything you really helped me achieve my goals (my exam is actually tmrw...wish me luck!).

    How do you know when a reaction with a 1,2 C=C alkene will end up doing a hyride shift? Is it all of them or are there specific cases where a tertiary haloalkane is produced?

  • @Leah4sci

    It will perform a hydride shift, if doing so produces a more stable carbocation intermediate. Each situation is unique, and must be considered on an individual basis. Would a 1-Bromo-3-Methylpentane undergoing an E2 mechanism require any carbocation rearrangements? Also, can methyl and hydride shifts occur on all mechanisms? (SN1, SN2, E1 and E2)? Many thanks for your great videos!

  • @agent475816

    @agent475816

    +KoolViking3 Sn2 and E2 reactions do not create a carbocation. It is a one step process. The nucleophile attacks from behind and the leaving group leaves simultaneously.
