HWH Slide Room Cylinder Blows Seal Racking The Slide Wall Sideways, How To Remove HWH Slide Cylinder

Work performed on a 2005 38J Winnebago / Itasca that is using the HWH slide out room called StoreMore Flat Floor System or HWH StoreMore Level Floor. In this video you will learn how to remove and replace a HWH hydraulic cylinder that has started leaking from a blown oil seal. You will also learn how UN-stick a slide wall that has racked or jammed sideways in the opening.
The part number of this hydraulic cylinder is RAP91371 or AP28614 or Winnebago part number 145949-02-704
Looks like these are not repairable and are on back order at the moment.
The hydraulic fittings and caps i used are size #4

I am working through the process with a very similar problem. This is the most helpful video I have discovered on the issue. Your explanations are far more understandable than most others I have seen, so thank you for that. The HWH company appears to be in problems, with many online comments about difficulty in establishing communications with the company, but even more problems with parts being on back order. In this case I find it problematic that the hydraulic cylinder cannot be rebuilt. I am making the assumption that fact is due to the design and assembly process used in building the cylinder, i.e. the lack of rebuild capability was intentional. Who wants that type of a system? I am accumulating criticisms of HWH and I am still hopeful that the company will step up a bit more on their support of their deployed systems.

Go to hydraulic shop that fixes heavy equipment more likely than not they be able to rebuild the cylinders. Way cheaper and much faster than HWH

Kevin “McGyver” Caudill. Your mind is always thinking of a creative, out of the box, fix. Thanks so much for being so willing to take the extra time to produce the videos you do. I imagine the repairs take a lot longer due to the filming. And then there’s the production time. Thanks hardly seems enough but Thanks! Bruce

Most interesting repair I have seen any one attempt to do. Nothing else like it out there. My slides are electric and they are enough of a problem when they fail. My Levelers are also electric, again easy peasy to work on. Hats Off to you again, and thanks for taking the time.

My HWH cylinders have the same aluminum block caps on the rod end of the cylinder. They unscrewed with the help of a 36 inch pipe wrench and I was able to source the seals from a local hyd supply house for both cylinders for less than 30 bucks.

Great work Kevin, I am surprised your hydralic shop can not cut the top of the cylinder off replace the seal and reweld it. Shame on HWH, there parts always seem to be on back order not sure why? I did send one of my levelers back to them about 5 years ago and they replaced the seal in it. Was not that bad of a wait. I would definetly order a spare one to keep on hand, I have power gear electric motors for my slide outs and have spare motors on hand.

Its crimped to a aluminum end piece sort of cheaply made, a new one is less than $500.00. We have 4 cylinders just like this on our 38J so I may get one on order

We have HWH slides on our 40 ft rig (2006 model). I do have a couple of leaks that need to be addressed. I hope the parts situation improves. Back orders and delivery delays seem to be common across industries these days, with supply chain challenges. Thanks for the video. You always do a nice job!

Hi Kevin: I love your videos; they are done very well. I have a 2005 Winnebago Journey 36G with a diesel CAT C7 motor. Do you have a video or will be making a video showing how to extend and retract the bedroom slide out. I believe the bedroom slide out only has one cylinder. I have a leak on my bedroom cylinder, I extended it and then started to retract it but it stopped, and fluid started leaking in the location of the bedroom cylinder. Looking at your video I think I either have a split hose or the cylinder seal is leaking, can you suggest what I need to do to correct the problem? Kind regards, Martin
