Frustration and HWH X-Arm RV Slide Out Chain Replacement

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Monaco used a HWH X-Arm hydraulic slide room on this 2005 Navigator. The rollers on the chain broke causing the chain to bind and break. Though the job is difficult in best scenerios, the access to this arm is difficult. Luckily, the chain broke with the slide out in and not out. LOL! This job really did frustrate me a great deal.

Thank you for this. My 06 Tiffin Kitchen Slide started to make a bad noise. It has the same mechanism as this video. After poking around I found half a broken chain roller on the front end side. Looks like we will be doing a chain install. I am thinking we should do the pair since they are the same age and have seen the same action.

I think I have stated my feelings about slides a few times. This was not a fun project, I've since done the repair a couple more times and have improved, but yes, it's a silly design and means the RV is dead in the water when it breaks and it will. Normal people cannot manually operate this slide. Thanks

Hi Do you know where I can buy 2 links and rollers I miss placed my when I disconnected the cylinder to be replaced

That seemed super challenging. Are RV manufacturers still using that type of slide mechanism? What is the name of that slide mechanism? And if that slide was still working properly when it went into the shop would it have be easier to repair? (changing the chain before it breaks).

The mechanism is built by HWH corporation out of Moscow , Iowa. It's called an " X Arm" due to the shape of the arms. Dont quote me on it, but I think it is now an obsolete slide and was replaced with a "Lateral Arm" slide that does not have a chain. I know Monaco, Tiffin, Country Coach, and a few other manufacturers used it for a few years. As to changing it before it breaks....I support the "If it ain't broke- Don't fix it" model. Though the rear chain was visible, the front one is hidden so I cannot believe the manufacturer intends for regular inspection. I think it is possible and there is a kit to replace rollers individually, but I can't see how that would be much easier, and the chain was less than $150. If the slide is stuck out, these can be manual be retracted with the longest ACME all-thread you've ever seen. I hope that helped and thanks for watching!
