Excellent video will show it to my technicians. Wanted to add that something I've found many times is the contactor blowing the fuse at the air handler when calling for cooling. When that happens usually de resistance of the contactor is like between 1-7 ohms. Ohms should read between 9-17 most of the times.

Yeah, was disappointed he didn't show more of that.. these contactor coils are causing problems these days, with shorts. You ohm out the coil and it's generally around 1 or so, a lot of techs don't know about to do that.

LRA locked rotor amps: the rotor is "locked" and not rotating at all. Anything higher than the LRA, the contact will be rendered useless. (Burned up).

@@maness2112 my wording here was wrong. What I meant to say is how close to LRA on startup would a load like a compressor be too high. For example I got 102 inrush amps with a LRA of 105 on a compressor

  • @Balticblue93

@@mrgreen9086 In that case, I would replace the contactor with a high LRA overhead and most likely install a hard start kit. 5-2-1 is the ideal hard start that I install, i don't do the two wire cheap units. But you are still within spec at 102 of 105 but I can't see I see many LRA units as low as 105. Usually, it is 150-200 for the models that I buy and install for my clients.

The voltage drop across the contacts is not convincing. You need current flowing to really demonstrate the problem. Using Low-Z on the meter may well have brought the apparent voltage drop down to zero given there was no current flow through the contacts. Also it would have been worth pointing out the first contactor had one permanently connected pole in addition to the single switched pole (sometimes called a shunt or one and a half poles)

I definitely agree with everything you said there, but for us seasoned technicians, we already knew that. But for those that learning, that would have been the better way to explain it.
