Husband & Wife Unload Logs With Log Tongs

Ғылым және технология

Logs frequently arrive on a trailer with sides or in the back of a pickup truck. Our Toyota electric fork truck & a pair of log tongs make quick work of the job unloading these Honey Locust logs and most other logs.

    Ok, so Linda is obviously a serious pro. People probably don't realize how much weight difference there is from the thick side of the log to the thin side. Being able to judge where to position the tongs so that the log doesn't flip up dangerously is a friggin art. I've moved probably 40 logs with my tongs and I'm terrible at it. Props Linda!!!

    Mary has her own clever way of standing right in a blind spot. When I find her I can't watch her and the work to be done with the loader. Her hand signals are not foreign, they are align to planet earth.

    I've watched a lot of your videos and now subscribed for more. The one thing I notice about you more than anything is your perfect posture when you work. Your back is always straight, even when you bend over to get the tongs off the log. It's most impressive.

    YIKES! A foot is a lot of travel for feathering! Mary's helmet is padded, isn't it?! I wondered why she needed a helmet. I wondered if you couldn't hear her directions over the noise. I always envied your tele-handler, but now I'm glad we have our "feather touch" Toyota.

    A comment on the fork truck-They are nice, I drove several at Trane where I worked. They were fairly easy to control. A comment on a hard hat--With both of you watching what you are doing, it would probably just be in the way or even fall off when you bend over to hook up or release the tongs. Just be safe.

    The boom on both of our Terexs are pretty quick and difficult to feather - especially the big one. With the boom extended, it can drop as much as a foot if you crack the valve just past the feather point. It looks like the forks on the forklift move at a slow but steady pace and you can hear the pump motor running so you have some idea what's happening.

  • @LindasSawmillCinema

    @LindasSawmillCinema

    I'm glad you like the videos, Tim. These logs were shaped in a way that they would be easy to slide the forks under, so blocks were unnecessary. Some logs do require skids underneath, especially if they are really straight & round, or if they are really big & heavy. Thanks for watching & commenting!! Linda

  • @LindasSawmillCinema

    Joe Tiller Thanks for your concern, but the main danger is not from getting hit with a fork. I always try to position my head and body away from the path of a descending fork (you never know if the operator is mad at you, haha). And when the forks are ascending, I try to be out of the way of the chain, should it slip off (which has only happened a couple of times in the past 22 years). The main danger is having the log slip out of the tongs. So, even though my boots are ANSI approved safety toe, I keep my feet out of any possible falling positions; That is why I look stooped over while balancing the log. Wearing a hard hat could increase my risk of serious injury, by limiting visibility. Occasionally, a well meaning customer tries to help, which add extra risk, because I can't focus on my job and they can interfere dramatically with my log balancing system. Thanks again for your concern and suggestion and thanks also for watching! Linda

    Oh yes, I am being a little sexist!!!! Why Linda are you always the ground grew and not the gentleman on the forklift???? I realize that working as you do you are in great shape and have a high amount of energy but once a while the situation you think would flip just to be fair and take turns like partners usually do... Flip coin, paper rock scissors, choose long straw, high card etc... Okay before the police are called on a domestic call just think about it!!!!!!!!!
