Husband & Wife Mill Bent Hackberry Log With Wood-Mizer LT50

Bent logs can have an extreme amount of waste and the lumber is often unstable as well. We are making 2"x3"x60" and 2"x3"x96" blocking. The waste pieces will be ground into mulch or used as firewood for heat.

This is amazing to watch two people working together like a well choreographed and well rehearsed dance. One know what the other ‘s next step will be and move in to support. Everything has a right place for and all equipment returns to its proper position. There is no wasted movement and no wasted material either. Great team work. Wish you the best!

I have a friend who sawed up a bunch of Pine logs for me to build my shop building. My neighbor gave me a big old bull pine that was next to his 7 acre pond. A hurricane had blown it over. When he cut the first 2X6 off one side it had so much tension in the grain that it jumped up and hit the head stock on the mill. Shook the entire mill and scared me half to death. Amazing what years of standing in a huge field and being twisted by wind will do to wood grain.

Love to watch the dance of a great team at work. An Idea I had. You might make some type of adjustable measuring device like a bar inside a pipe with nut welded into the pipe to lock down the bar so the person running the saw only has to measure the pipe/bar to set a length and measure the pieces against the bar and not taking out the tape all the time.

I love arched logs. I look for them wherever I can find them. It makes a great novelty lumber. People can use it for signs, bar tops, curved seats or whatever fancy strikes them. But I never treat them like a straight log because you lose too much material and you destroy its uniqueness. I preserve the curve and leave the edges live by cutting only in the plane where it lies flat. Then you end up with curved but stable lumber and it's very cool. It's tricky though. You have to stop in the middle of the cut, shift the log and finish the cut. Obviously this can really mess you up. But the problem is solved if you screw a guide board on the bottom to give you a flat, non-shifting plane that won't alter the cut when you un-clamp, move the log and re-clamp. Then you can flip the log over, remove the guide, turn it end for end and utilize the flat you cut to keep the kerf straight and cut through the log right down to the bed, whilst of course moving and re-clamping the log half way through each pass. It takes time and a little cursing but the result is totally unique, stable and wonderful lumber! 2" lumber seems to be the most popular. That's my $.02 for the day... :) Thanks for the video Linda! I love all things sawdusty!

Whow whow whow, there is a market for bent logs, instead of turning the log, lay it on its side, and cut bent planks, C shaped planks, grains that bend like this are invaluable to boat builders, if you steam bend a strait plank it stresses the grains, and makes it want to break or return to strait, bent grains can bend farther and hold its shape better, also, the flat area you rest your hands on the rail that is approx 6-10" wide is cut from bent boards, on a work skiff, this piece is structural and bent boards are needed, not for the degree in radius, but the grain that you can cut a radius from, please, explore this, you won't be sorry

Hackberry trees are considered a nuisance here in central Texas; fast growing, short lived, tend to split or fall over, variable stability, not pretty. But I think that's wrong, fast growing in a place with erratic rainfall is good, the wood is quite hard, not particularly pretty, but can have interesting grain. You just have to protect it from rot, it's not durable at all in damp conditions. A little used wood that could find a niche. If that curve is due to it being a limb, or if the trunk is hung way over, you'll have compression wood on the lower side and tension wood on the upper. Compression wood is generally weaker to much weaker in bending applications, tension wood is often superior to the average properties of the wood. For any structural application you'd have to factor in the grain runout in a curved piece like this. If this were a more durable wood old time boat builders, like me before I retired, would love a nice big squared off, but with the curve intact, baulk of that size, to sit out back and cure up for a couple of years waiting for the right job.

Absolutely correct about compression and tension on a horizontal limb. The more horizontal it is the more stress it has. These are for blocking, so it isn’t a big concern. Thanks for watching and commenting! Linda

Linda, I would advocate that there is a better use for logs curved like that. I'm a timberframer and I actually looked for curved logs like that for naturally curved knee braces. Depending on the log, I might cut two 4" thick(actually 4.5 inch to leave enough for planing after they dry some, also incase there is any twist while they sit, it can be planed out) on either side of the pith. If it's a particularly big piece I might try for 6 inch thick(6.5). I cut curved stock on either side of the pith. I leave out the middle 1.5-2 inches. If you're interested in discussing it or exchanging some pictures, message me on facebook Brad Baber in IL. I use curved and crooked wood for timberframing members - collar ties(5-8 inches thicked boxed heart centered), forked posts(8-10 inches thick heart centered), wonky tie beams(8-10 inches thick heard centered). It's niche product that many timber framers would like to use, but don't always have time to search for. It can take a little more time on my manual mill to set them up, but I like making the organic looking pieces for a frame.

falfas55bgas , I had the same idea as a retired boat builder, but Hackberry is pretty useless in a marine applications, knees particularly as they are often the most vulnerable to rot. And you'd have to check for compression wood. See my earlier comments.

I think I would have laid that log on the bed at 90' - curve down flat - and cut across the curve. The curved boards that result would likely have been stable. I see 2 thick slabs for a table joined at the ends, and the resulting eyeball or oval shaped table with a open center would be fantastic. I know wood pretty well but what is hackberry? Looks like poplar or willow? Okay, just now saw that last piece on the bed - birdseye! I think you could have sold the curved slabs in say 4" with that color and markings in San Francisco for half the value of your mill. I am going out tomorrow with a come-a-long and pulling a young black oak over at a big angle for my son to mill when I am long gone. Thanks for the inspiration! On edit I now see some more comments about my curved slab idea. With your exposure on the internet, you really can have a market for such unusual slabs. I do recall in the OLD days ship builders in England would go into the forest and bend young trees for future bows of large ships.

No disrespect, not sure why your milling hackberry? I'm a wood cutter and hackberry doesn't store or season well. My customers who burn it are fireplace customers, after it seasons for a year it gets really soft. Thank you for your wonderful content really enjoy watching you mill lumber.

It is ironic. I have some friends that will buy wood that has an arched grain like that and put it in a steam soak to then put in a bending jig for three days. Yes, even hackberry. It would be neat if they could procure the bent wood without it being straightened out by the sawyer and start with the natural curvature of the wood.

I am NEW to your channel, but I was thinking that maybe you need to get in touch with speciality custom furniture makers and let them know that you do have NATURALLY CURVED SLABS OF LUMBER that could & would be ideal for some custom pieces of unique furniture.. Some of the lumber coming off of that curved tree log would be great as a front hall bench or patio seating..! Again I am new to your channel and you may have already reached out to custom woodcrafters, but if not they are always looking to build unique statement statement pieces to make them stand out over other furniture builders...!?! Just a thought. God Bless.

Still one of the hardest working women on the tube. I have to ask.....this video looks like almost double speed, and still 18 minutes to saw through. So half an hour ? Could you make money on this log ? I'm not sure what you ended up with for material

+Dave Price Thank you. The sawing part of the original video was exactly 30 minutes. This log was not a money maker, but it needed to be processed into something. Probably half was firewood, but we got some usable blocking to help fill the order and the rest went into skids to ship out lumber. Thanks for watching! Linda

Well that opening statement sounded pretty ignorant. People make curved wood items all the time and then have to deal with non parallel grain when cutting a curved shape out of straight grain inducing weakness. They would loved curved lumber! Way less waste and grain running true.

I've been watching the Tips from a Shipwright channel and Lou says he looks for curved lumber that no one else wants. Do you ever sell the bent lumber to boat builders?

  • @falfas55bgas
    @falfas55bgas7 жыл бұрын

What would you say is the retail value of that bent log by the time you sell it? I'd give $50 for just the log all day long. With that much sweep and clear...that would make a great timberframe curved brace. A slab cut on each side to make it 9" or 7" thick and I'd pay that milling cost too(or I could mill it). Then I let it set in my barn for a year to stabilize enough and then plane the two sides clean and parallel to 6" or 8", draw knife the bark and sand the live edge.

This is the first indoor sawmill that I have ever seen which operates as a family business and not as a large industrial operation. The operation its self, seems to progress smoothly and efficiently throughout the entire cutting process, but it also appears to be a very strenuous work load on all those involved. Additionally, it appears that your operation is not into purchasing or salvaging tree trunks or other unwanted logs and then slabbing those into lumber for resale to customized furniture builders. Therefore, I assume that "Linda's Sawmill" operates only or mostly, on a by order special sawing of logs for customers who bring their logs to your mill and state how the logs are to be cut. If I am right in my assumption, I am curious to know if there is a reasonable percentage of profit in that type of operation. If my assumption is wrong and you actually run a different type of milling business, than I have assumed, I would be interested in learning what your primary business is.

Over the years we have milled lots of grade lumber for big mills, custom milling for small guys, as well as lumber in our sales room, for sale to hobbyists and professional full time wood workers a like. We also mill our own logs for trailer planks and blocking. Versatility keeps life interesting and food on the table. We are thrifty spenders and don’t require a big income. Thanks for watching! I hope you wouldn't do that with a bent piece of oak? Take off the sides only, and cut through the centre of the resulting (bent) slab, you've got two beautiful curved braces for someone to use in a frame building. Not all building lumber has to be straight!
