Wood-Mizer Keeps Us Hopping, Milling Short Cherry Logs

The LT-50 tried hard to bury us on this custom job of short Black Cherry Logs. Did we keep up? You be the judge.
P.S. There are 1-2 oak logs mixed in.

    Lets see now, chief cook, canner, equipment operator, sawyer helper, ditch digger, cement finisher, clean up crew, garden keeper, accountant, secretary for everything, You lady are a, what my dad would say, jack of all trades. No question that you are a valuable asset to the whole operation. Respectfully, a job well done.

    Thanks for another great video. The shorter lumber may be lighter but you have to carry it across the gap = more work out. You're keeping up just fine! Nice to see a family working together. Growing up on the farm I was my Fathers shadow and how well you learn from that. Had a sawmill also. Thanks again. Doug

Possibly its a combination machine that cuts varied widths also, and you adjust each time with the lever underneath on the right side to maximize the width of your output piece???? Im just not sure what it is or does. Thanks for top notch videos!!!

    Hi Linda! I left you a comment telling about the monster walnut tree in Tacoma Wa. I learned you are in Iowa. I bet you have an endless supply of fruit and hardwood logs! Have you ever cut any ewe wood? A long time ago I had a job trimming brush piles in a clear-cut and set my saw on a dirty stump to file my chain. My dogs scratch the surface and it was blood-red. It was a ewe wood about 3-1/2 feet. I love your channel and love to watch ewe all work so well! Keith L. The Dalles Or.

    I see you measure the board width when you put it on the belt, would it be easier to have a yardstick mounted an inch or 2 above the belt? or better yet have some lazer light lines projected down on the board at every inch or so?

    Bicycle Yoda There is a measuring tool mounted on the edger, but I prefer my method for accuracy. We have talked about a laser, but have decided against it due to the expense and the maintenance burden of resetting it when it gets out of adjustment. Thanks for watching! Linda

    When you set the edger are you going for widths in 1" increments, 1/2", or maximizing the width regardless? Do you decide based on the job? for example, these shorter cherry vs. some longer more common species

  • @LindasSawmillCinema

    @LindasSawmillCinema

    On custom jobs, such as this one, we try to maximize yield, so the customer gets as much lumber out of their log as possible. For the wholesale market, it is necessary to saw according to NHLA grade rules. The edger is capable of 1/8" increments, ranging from 3 1/2 to 16 3/8 inches. Thanks for watching! Linda

  • @LindasSawmillCinema

    @LindasSawmillCinema

    10 жыл бұрын

    Thank YOU, I'm glad you enjoyed it! You have a very good question, so good that I/we can't answer it truthfully. The blade guide rollers surface is the main wear issue, as the bearings are sealed & don't go bad before the roller surface. There is a lot of variation in surface wear, if we saw many gritty logs, the rollers wear faster. Thanks for watching & commenting!! Linda

    Bradley Otto Yes, the sawmill has a red lazer line that shows approximately where the blade will travel. It gets bumped out of adjustment frequently and takes some time to set it perfect, so it usually isn't exact, but it is very nice to have. Thanks for watching! Linda

    +donal heffernan Are you implying that I have big hips?! Hahaha, just kidding. Actually, I have wished that many times, but the bottom roller needs to be beefy to take the abuse and can't be shortened. The upper section can't be trimmed because of the way the roller shaft is attached. We actually use the corners anyway, so I have to live with the slight angle cut that is there. Thanks for the idea, though. Linda

    Hi Miss Linda, I was wondering, how much should I expect to pay on a custom milling like this. I have a few local sawmills and need some wood from Ash, Cherry and Cedar along with a large Oak tree that I would love to get custom milled. I live in hardwood rich Southern Illinois.

    Prices vary in different areas; it is a good idea to call several of the local sawmills to get a better idea. I will send a private message. Thanks for watching! Linda
