Same thing happened to me 5 yrs ago. I fell at work, broke my elbow...and those soulless beings let me go right when I got back from recovery. 51 yrs old...scared to DEATH...rent due in 2 weeks...workers' comp ending...landed a job 10 days later! The MOST generous CEO ever...amazing benefits, 100% matching 401K, paid sick & vaca days! For the 1st time in a LONG time I look forward to going to work every morning...and it doesn't even fell like work!!!

@Sir Lancelot while this is true i think in the instance of the main bread winner being with out a job for 2 months. That bulk payment they get should for sure be used to pad them in case he doesnt get a job any time soon. Sucks but the faster he finds work, the more of that bulk payment they then can put down on their debt.

Uber was a life-saver for one my brothers between jobs, and a friend who was over 50 and facing a lot of ageism in interviews. The friend eventually got a very good job but it took like three years. Go hustle and keep looking for something better. The longer you sit at home feeling sorry for yourself, the more apt you are to fall into depression and negativity and even illness. Idle hands is truly an unhealthy thing for mind and body.

A layoff is the best excuse to get revenge and do better. I struggled for a while with how to phrase that, but Dave put it so beautifully. I lived that just over a year and a half ago, let go from a job due to the tantrums of a vindictive co-worker. The rejection was painful, but I picked myself up, started making more money with greater flexibility and got out of debt faster. Looking back, I couldn't be more grateful now. Although it didn't feel like it at the time, they did me the biggest favor anyone could. Now we're debt-free, have more money in savings than we ever have in our entire life, and are getting closer every day to being fully self employed and in compete control of our financial destiny. What a blessing!

This side hussle movement is a way to make up for denied money, from taking pay cuts due to layoffs. People have to do them because people can no longer make ends meet. There are too many people for the jobs. You would have to swing from accountant/marketing, to electrician to make equal or better money. People arent going to do that.

The perfect job might take longer but to Daves point, any job is better than none. And yes, every opportunity to improve is an opportunity, his point might be, do not be lazy, and go after it! And for those that have a job, seek to improve and prepare for the opportunity, isn't Dave that says that all of us will leave our job one day. ;) Wisdom, for free!

The reason why a lot of people don't find a job is because they are either overqualified or have no experience in the fields they apply for. I knew a lady once who was working as a janitor and she had a master's degree. You're not going to tell me that's not been overqualified, are you? So yeah, there is such a thing as been overqualified.

Then why didn't I get hired for similar jobs when I was told I was "overqualified?" What was actually going on? I don't believe I was. I was willing to do anything legal after my divorce to feed and shelter me and my child. When asked "why do you want THIS job?" that's exactly what I told them.

You can get a job in a restaurant in a matter of days. You don't have to tell the managers that you have a degree and tons of experience. You don't have to put down that you are currently at McDonalds on your resume for your "real" job. Being out of work is mentally disabling for most people - and most people get jobs whilst in another job. The income needs to be continuous, even something to pay for food and utils. Being under-employed is better than unemployed if you want food on the table. Customize your resume for every job you go for.

Dave doesn't understand the dynamics of job loss. He would rather this guy give up his unemployment to take a minimum wage job that distracts him from his job search. He'll get something but it will probably be around the 3 month of looking time frame.

Thats the idea though, any job is better than no job. Then you can take your time to find a better one later.

But that minimum wage job buys food for his kids. So there’s that.

2 months is not a long time, especially for someone that would need to go through the interview process with multiple levels of an organization. First an interview with a recruiter / HR, then they need to interview all candidates, then they need to schedule interviews with the hiring manager, internal contacts for that position, etc. It can take weeks to even hear back, especially at large companies.

Thank you!! Some companies take 2-3 weeks before they even respond to your application.
