    Wish there were some way to get in touch with the caller. My employer is hiring entry-level data analysts and I’d be happy to screen this guy and even give him some tips / advice and try to set up a call with our internal recruiter. The hosts are right about needing to set yourself apart by making a real human connection. Working with a recruiter is another good move, as long as they have established relationships with a few clients they already have their foot in the door and can get you on the short list. Don’t give up Ryan!

  • @hornetguy9063

    Agree with this. While recruiters are a bit of a numbers game, at least that’s a chance to have an actual phone call with a human being that can connect you to hiring managers. That’s how I got my first real professional job. This being said, I’d like a return to the days where you walk into a work building and give the person at the front desk an application package, addressed to the hiring manager. The fact that it’s so easy to apply for jobs now does kind of result in the same problem that a lot of women have in online dating: they have so many options, that they end up making the choice based on cosmetics and don’t regard simple stuff (like if this person actually plans to stick around)

It took me 2 years to land in a job, and it was with some tiny company that no one has ever heard of. Now was there no structural obstacles to my search? Of course not. If they want to hire their buddies, or “improve diversity”, or whatever they want to do, they’ve a right to hire whomever they want. But you’re just an anonymous nobody when you’re applying around. And also, clearly just signing into your laptop and spamming resumes isn’t working. It might be time to change tactics, like reaching out to headhunters directly.

    For everyone struggling....Don't Give Up! You are needed in the right place, you're valuable...don't forget that! Second...want to share a tip I learned in a career center that helped: Set up what is called an Informational Interview. This is where you contact who would be your supervisor for the position, or the HR director, ask to set up an interview to learn more about the position. Do this step after filling out the information needed to apply for the job. Have a few copies of your resume printed also print out the job description and company mission(for your own notes to practice), and look for specific skills, education, even volunteering where you used these skills. Make a list of questions you would like to know more about...examples: job duties, how they can help you in advancing your skills, moving up, company direction, ect. When you go into the interview, and ask these questions and the supervisor/HR director describes more details...THIS is your chance to shine...share the examples of your experience and skills in those areas. This worked for me back in 2017. When first plan was just apply online and follow up call...NO interviews for a year! I did this method...got a job in 3 months!

    I’ve been a financial analyst and financial analyst tech coach at one of the Fortune 500 companies for the past 7 years. There is definitely a shortage of qualified people and knowing someone is not necessary, but that being said it is still unlikely for a college grad to just get dropped into the role. I’ve seen it happen once for a pretty big rockstar. Outside of that, at least two to three years in related field are required. Many start in banking. I’ve seen people come over from funds management. Some do data entry or transaction processing for the company they want to be at, then move into analytics role as an internal applicant.

  • @alonabeck713

    @alonabeck713

    @@Forgiveness9 as in give you some pointers or recommend you for an open role? I only recommend people I know and have seen them work, so in that regard I won’t be able to help, but as far as some pointers, sure. 1. Pick an industry. Finance is a beautiful path because every business in every industry needs financial experts. But the key here is being an expert. Make sure you are learning about your industry as a whole because financial analysts often are expected to be the link between multiple departments and contacts both internal and external. For example my industry is health insurance. 2. Identify key players in the industry. Do smaller companies hire financial analysts? Yes. But you will likely be expected to already be an expert as smaller companies have fewer resources for training and development. Getting started, I’d recommend targeting larger employers. Luckily many of these roles, at least in health insurance field, moved to remote work past COVID, so you are no longer limited by location as much. For my industry I’d maybe focus on top 8-10 carriers. 3. Monitor careers section of their websites closely. Large employers (say top 100 of Fortune 500 list) don’t post to Indeed, Monster, etc. these listings may trickle in to those sites, but it takes time; and in my experience the time to apply is generally VERY tight. Most openings are only out there for a week, maybe two weeks at most, so checking the company website will give you the best chance of identifying roles that are truly open. And don’t snooze on applying - cause requisitions, like I said, are only open for a very short window of time. 4. When applying, there will generally be all kinds of required fields for you to fill in information about your professional history and at the end you will also have an optional opportunity to upload a resume. ALWAYS upload a resume. Even if the recruiter is fine to proceed without one, the hiring manager will want to see one. 5. Do not submit a blanket resume of all the things you’ve done in your past employment. Tailor your resume for the specific position you are applying for. Say, the role you are applying for lists reconciliations that you will be doing as part it. Say, you are currently working as a banker at Wells Fargo and mostly opening checking accounts for folks. Unless the listing indicates that you will be opening new accounts, no need to list account opening as a current work task. Instead think of transferable skills/tasks, like helping customers with their check book reconciliations. Sure this is probably a minuscule part of what you would do day-to-day as a banker at Wells Fargo, but it is the more relevant part to the new role that you are applying for, so list it. Ideally you would have matching experience/transferable skills for all or most of the required skills listed in the job description. It’s ok if your experience in something happened three jobs ago - if you have it and it is relevant - show it on your resume. 6. When interviewing ask questions to learn even more about the role. Even if you get rejected, this will give you a leg up in the next interview possibly even with another company, because if you are targeting the same industry, chances are the roles and workload within those roles will be very similar. Questions like “Tell me about the team I’ll be working with”, “Tell me about day-to-day”, “what other teams within the company I’ll be working with if I was placed in this role”, “what do current team members say they enjoy the most about the role”, or even “what do current employees share as their challenges” are all good questions to ask. Again, if you are passed up this time and go into another interview for a similar role and can speak of your understanding of the day to day and interactions with others, the hiring manager will be pleasantly surprised to see that you know what you are getting into and would be more comfortable offering the role to you. If you don’t understand something don’t be afraid to ask clarifying questions too. 7. Be ready with actual examples illustrating your knowledge, competencies, specific projects you worked on, specific contributions you have made, past successes, past challenges, and how you navigated/overcome those challenges. Have 5-8 strong situations from your past employment that you prepare ahead of time that you can use to illustrate some of this. Usually the same situation can showcase several skills, so you don’t need a ton of examples just 5-8 good ones. And no, you won’t be able to think of them on the spot. 8. If you don’t get the job and assuming that you did ask which other teams you’d be working with, if hired, consider applying into those teams too. What you may have already discovered in your past employment is that financials are usually the end of the road in most cases where we are working with data of the decisions and actions that already happened. Yes you may be making recommendations for the future, but the data is from the past. Well, those other teams usually are the ones who made those past decisions and took those past actions and some of those teams are likely to be more entry-level geared. So if you get a no on the financial analyst role, try applying into some of those other teams and then transferring as an internal applicant. For health insurance industry, related teams would include: revenue, banking, implementation, eligibility, and underwriting. Good luck!

    One of the best things you can utilize from your college is getting an internship! Various ways: sometimes they provide direct access to some, sometimes your professors know of positions and companies hiring and sometimes the admin can help you land one and this helps tremendously opening up to networking with other interns and people at the company. I went to a commuter state school in St Louis and this was the key to kickoff my career in accounting. He's already graduated, but it could be worth it to reach out to your college and try. See if you can sign up and take a class if you have to be technically "enrolled" as a student to qualify for one.

    College finance professor here. Ryan needs to go back to the few top professors in finance that he impressed 18 months ago and send them his latest CV and tell them he is looking for anything in finance, including back office or low-level jobs. YOUR CV MUST BE FLAWLESS! ABSOLUTLEY WORD PERFECT! Finance practitioners are continuously contacting me, as a professor, telling me they need someone desperately (because a new hire did not show, or a recent hire quit, or someone got sick, etc.). If I have some CVs in hand from good students, I send them out with a personal recommendation. I love helping good people get good jobs (or even a foot in the door in a low-level entry position), but the student needs to contact me to get that help. If Ryan is not doing this, then other people are taking those jobs while his degree knowledge is getting stale. Also, Ryan needs to go to a local university with a Bloomberg terminal (or pay $150 to do it online) and get Bloomberg BMC certified and Bloomberg ESG certified. Get it done now and those recent dates will help show that you have not been idle since graduating.

During my undergraduate degree, I interned for three companies (two unpaid) while working full time at a hotel as a front desk agent and night auditor because I wanted to get into the travel industry as a career. So while in college, I was a full time student with a 3.5 GPA, worked 40 hours a week at a hotel, while interning 32 hours a week for a travel company. The internships provided working knowledge of how to manage marketing campaigns, analyze the data and make improvements to the marketing collateral. Then report out to executives on what worked well, what didn't and how to make improvements. Before I graduated, I had job offers from all three companies I interned for.

It’s a great way to get your foot in the door to some companies.

    You have to request virtual informational interviews and earn referrals, you can’t just apply on the website nowadays unfortunately. The interview preparation process is intense also. It’s best to pay for a program to help you learn the tricks of getting a career if you can afford it. But all of the information is out there for free.

    There are also some great resources that will teach him how to specifically tailor the resumes he is sending out to each individual job ad. If he is not doing that, his resume is not going to be past the AI and will never actually be seen by a human being. I can have a lot of sympathy for how he may feel about what these guys are saying and wouldn't blame him if he is thinking to himself that he didn't just put himself through four years of college so he could drive Uber and deliver pizza for 60 hours a week.

    The problem is that the menial job takes so much time away from finding the job that they ACTUALLY want, and ACTUALLY went to school for - he needs other people to go to bat for him. The fast food jobs will provide flexibility (because they're hurting for people), for him to have job interviews; and they know full well he'll only need to be there for a few months, tops. At one point, college grads had been able to safely assume they could get an entry level job as soon as they graduated, but now the market is so watered down with these degrees, they need a ton of other stuff to go with it - soon the degree will be meaningless, and employers will only be looking for experience and skills - they won't care if those skills were developed in or out of college.

But I personally can't fathom not working full time in the meantime while looking 🤷🏼‍♀️ I did this myself, looking for a teaching job, working as a teacher's aid part time, nannying in the mornings and evenings, and working retail on nights and weekends. It absolutely sucked. And I was able to continue looking for jobs in between work. Did eventually get hired, in a different school district. Took a year. I know that's a niche market, but I'm just saying, working crazy hours and still applying to new jobs can be done.

    @@donaldlyons17 well, not paying your bills in the meantime seams like a pretty horrible decision. Most jobs have the option to take a personal day or sick day, or trade a shift with someone else, and most interviews have various time slots available for the interview. Is it fun? No. Is it easy? Also no. Is it necessary? Yes. Honestly, people who try to justify not working are privileged/lucky/blessed (take your pick on the word choice) to be in situations where they aren't actually homeless and starving for not working. Me personally, I didn't have the OPTION to not work because bills had to be paid if I wanted to have electricity and running water. Thank God I'm in a better situation now. But honestly, if you HAVE to pay your bills you will find a way to do that AND advance in your career.

    My only advice to him is to only use the major job hunting websites as an intermediary resource. He should definitely look at them first but as soon as he finds postings on those websites, find those companies' official websites and go to their career page and find their job openings. There's probably a good 10 - 15 other postings they have that those job hunting websites don't have because the company didn't think they're worth paying those job hunting websites for.

    Do they still have temp agencies out there? I am retired, so I'm a dinosaur, but when I was young and working I got my foot in the door of some great companies through temp agencies. Because I was a go-getter, I always got job offers after working as a temp for them. My last job (21 years long) I answered a blind ad in a newspaper (I know that is really old school), but it turned out to be a job for a very large telecommunications company that was building infrastructure for wireless phones. I was hired on a temporary basis and after a year, I was hired permanently. The point I am trying to make is knock on 20 doors and at least one will answer. I was never out of work for long in 42 years of working. Yes, times today are different, but don't use that as an excuse. Companies need to get work done and to do that they need people to do the work. Yes, there are robots and A.I., but they still need people. Use your imagination and make getting a job happen. They are not going to come knocking on your door and hand you a job on a silver platter. Show imagination, initiative, and a willingness to get the job done. That's what companies want.
