A wonderful trip down Running Wild Cheetah Conservation cub training memory lane. I spent some time recently volunteering at RWCC in South Africa to assist in training the cubs to enrich and train for a future release; among other things. These cubs were born at this breeding project and being 'mother' raised to adulthood before release.
RWCC is doing ground breaking work in my opinion and I am learning from them as well as others who wish to help the endangered Cheetah survive. A captive breeding program is one part of the answer and has proven successful. The experience and knowledge shared between conservation groups like RWCC is improving the overall process birth to release. More and more is being learned from dedicated people who have something valuable to share in the fields of science, knowledge, and experience.
We take a Skyler and Zahra, Shadow's cubs, on an enrichment walk to hunt some wild hares in a large game range. You can just SEE the enthusiasm of these cheetahs as we transport them from their overnight enclosures to the fields where the wild hares live. Wide eyes and open mouths of anticipation as we travel to the destination.
By the time these cubs age to about 2.5 years old, they will be prepared and ready for a release. RWCC has a new project location North West of JoBerg in South Africa with new larger enclosures for their animals and a massive wild animal stocked game range to train, hunt and live on when released. It has been a dream of the founders to RWCC since the beginning nearly a decade ago and now close to reality.
Check out their webpages and consider joining them in volunteership, internship, or direct donations to help them succeed and save a special cats species... the Cheetah.
Folks like the Gouws and others have inspired me to do the same, and I hope to establish my own cheetah breeding/release project in the future and increase the chances of success of projects like this.
For those who didn't catch the Looney Tunes reference in my video, that is me aging myself with a reference to a classic Looney Tunes battle between Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny where Elmer is a hunter trying to get Bugs but never does because he is always getting smarted.
Elmer had a speech impediment where he could not pronounce the letters R or other in words, like Rabbit or Very and it made it funny back in the day. Making fun of peoples or animals handicaps is not cool today... ') But I just had too because this is what it reminded me of. It was not to belittle the prey rabbits that are running for their lives as well. I respect and admire all life but I also understand the balance. But, I also have to be me.
Thanks for watching!

These cheetahs could resolve our hare and hair problems at the same time. Hunt down the hares and they give people a shave because they also LOVE grooming you with their sharp knife cutting tongues. There is some study suggesting the American Cheetah (extinct since last Ice Age) is the reason pronghorn and possibly jack rabbits are so fast... pressures from cheetahs hunting them resulted in adaptations for speed.

Dolph C. Volker I've read that before but they also said it was moreso a running Catamount/Cougar/Mountain Lion subspecies and not Cheetahs related. They also said that it was half the size of the Cheetahs. But if the Pronghorn and Antelope Jackrabbit run so fast from a quick miniature predator, why does no herbivore in Africa or Asia run comparably well to escape from real Cheetahs that are twice as large?

It SURE helps in caring and training the cubs when mom trusts you too... It's also very rewarding on so many levels and beneficial to them all. Some think it degrades the release but it does not. There is a phase of dehumanizing where there is limited encounters (at about two and half years old) before their release. But other captive tamed cheetahs have been released successfully in the wild as well. Instincts are there for a reason and it works.

It definitely felt rewarding, I can't imagine how awesome it felt when it's mama cheetah! I'd probably got too happy I'd cry TTwTT

It's curious how cheetahs were never domesticated by African tribes as a hunting aid, in a similar fashion as wolves were elsewhere. Especially since they seem to be even less aggressive than wolves are.

  • @judetwee

    @judetwee

    3 жыл бұрын

The reason they weren't domesticated has to do with the fact that they're hard to breed in captivity, but they WERE used quite often as hunting aids in Egypt and other regions. While dogs and wolves just need one male and one female in heat, cheetahs require some very long-distance courtship that they simply won't do when confined to a cage. Most cheetah cubs born in captivity today are the result of artificial insemination, I think.

@Donald trick Trump Has STD's from Stormy D. It was thought long ago that the King Cheetah was a sub-species or even a hybrid between leopards and cheetahs. All that has been disproved by genetic tests today. King Cheetahs are still cheetahs of the same genus and species, but are expressing a gene mutation of pigment in their skin that results in more black than most other cheetahs. It is referred to a recessive gene.

Very non aggressive and good temperaments. Cheetahs are like this to survive against bigger and stronger predator they live with. Mean aggressive cheetahs die when fighting lions, leopards, or hyenas and don't reproduce.cubs that would make the same mistake. RUN!! that is their survival trait, that and hiding their scents.

@@rainerzufall2039 cheetahs can change direction as quickly as any wild animal out there, with their long tails and non-retractable claws , they're able to shift left to right within a nanosecond. You will find heaps of examples of this on KZread when they're hunting for Gazelles and/or Impalas. Rabbits are very small so a cheetah would have a hard time trying to pin the rabbit as they change direction.

cheetahs are faster than rabbits for sure, but these are not wild cheetahs. they always have food available for them, they don't need to run after food to survive. that's why they don't have the same exact experience and desperation for food unlike their wild counterparts.

This is history in action. Cheetah coursing and hunting with cheetahs has been a centuries-old tradition, mainly with Asiatic cheetahs in India and Persian royalty circles. Cheetahs are so greyhound like in my opinion. They’re just more doglike than other “Panthera” cats. They have the claws like a dog, the speed of a greyhound (with the prey drive), and they seemingly respond better to training and socializing than any other feline I’ve seen. Amazing!

A cheetah is actually a very good pet IF you have enough land (at least 500 feet long on one side). It is by far the largest cat that adult humans can have as a pet without being in danger from the cat (it is less dangerous than a German Shepherd, IMO).
