Hunting Down My Subscribers | Experiment

Ғылым және технология

We asked our subscribers for permission to dig up their personal data. More than 500 volunteered. We used only open information and some deduction skills 🔍 - so anyone could find it.
It's common sense nowadays to be caution of phishing emails and creating strong passwords, but what about our social and habitual connections? How much info can someone get out of it?
Under the terms of the experiment, the participants did not provide any additional data, only consent. What we are able to find? Watch our video 👀
Timeline:

Alright, I'll give you that - the video description gave most of it away but not my current area that I'm living anymore - though the mention of getting a data request from YT does have me concerned if someone needed it for a legitimate reason. On that note, your predictions with the huntsman spider was quite impressive. (By the way, it's Coober Pea-dea) Thanks for letting me onto this activity - I honestly was quite spooked when I was the first participant but was quite relieved that you could only tell I was Australian and was from Coober Pedy. Also - thanks for not asking around for the lost connection, that'd probably be the ticket to finding me. Good ol' social engineering, asking the bartender about someone and using that to get closer to you.

Funnily enough that trick sumsub described about asking people in the area is the exact trick my biological father used to track down my bio mother (I’m adopted) to be able to find me to get contact. Luckily in my case, I didn’t know who he was and am happy to have in my life now. It’s crazy the information you can find out about people from the little information you do know.

Would be interested to participate in a part 2, curious to understand how the sleuthing process works to narrow or broaden the search. As an aside, I once did this to someone in a chat, completely freaked them out by finding their full unlocked profile on fb and started quoting their family details to them. They were sure it was a prank by someone they knew, took me a long time to convince them that they were simply putting their lives on the internet for anyone to see.

This is basically d0xxing right? I used to do it for fun with my internet friends back in the early 2010s they all thought I hacked into their systems but I was simply "digging" through mostly public info plus ask them general innocent questions. Some of them I even got their home addresses and that freaked them out haha

Doxxing is publishing private information (docs) about people such as their phone number or home address. I wouldn’t consider looking at what people publicly post to be doxxing.

Ahh I you recall my memory of 2012, where I dig the system in my campus that can reveal anyone in campus. I even become some sort of consultant for my friends if they got a girl, little know about her, but had tiny detail, like her faculty, or her nick name. I can find it so easily, however, a year after that, the system had been revamped and I no longer able to use it. It was fun really.
