    My ICE car has already been dug up from the earth and raw materials converted into a perfectly serviceable vehicle able to provide many years of use long into the future. How is it possible for anyone to argue my $6,000 ICE should go to landfill or be recycled because a swap to a new EV is better for the environment?

    Well said. My daily driver is 54 years old, sure it’s not the most fuel efficient vehicle on the road but it’s long since amortized it’s environmental cost.

    We found this when my wife tried to sell her 2.5 year old Nissan Leaf. Purchased new it was £30,000, it had low mileage, it had full service history including battery condition reports, but was valued at £12,500. My first reaction was shock at the extent of the depreciation. My second reaction was that there is a bargain for all those would-be environmentalists out there who want to go green but can’t afford the price tag of a new car. I thought this low-mileage, like-new, full service history, EV would be snapped up, but nope, no one wanted it. Someone in government needs to sit up and take notice that people aren’t even buying EVs when offered at bargain-prices. By comparison, I sold my 5 year old diesel BMW around the same time for a lot more than expected. People want used diesels more than they want used EVs.

    I bought a used Nissan LEAF for $13k recently. It was a 2021 model w/ 8K miles. It has a branded Title but the vehicle report from Nissan was perfect. We love it now and drive it quite a bit locally. I have 6 gas cars though that we use to drive everywhere else.

    I think one thing to remember with EVs is that not every car dealer would want to have them on their lot as relatively speaking if their cars and target audience are ICE cars then they would find them harder to sell. As such, the reality is that that what you have been offered is not anywhere near what it’s worth. The car has not actually depreciated. If I offer you £1 for your car, it doesn’t make it worth £1. You mention ‘someone in the gov needing to take note that people are not buying EVs’ - the best selling car in the world is an EV. The notion that people don’t want them is just a total lie. People don’t want the bad ones.

    I live in Norway and I am happy to announce that last week I bought a used HONDA CRV 2008 AUT. PETROL car to replace my Nissan env-200 electric car that was damaged in a head-on collision where a drugged person drove into my car back in 2021. Been without a car since. But since Norway will ban the sale of new ICE cars in 2025 (in 9 months), I had to do something now before the prices of used cars skyrocket. Since nobody knows how long it will be before they stop selling liquid fuel, I didn't take the chance of buying a brand new car. I can afford to lose the $20,000 it cost me (yes, that's right. $20k for a 16 year old car!), but I can't afford to lose the $100,000 (+++) a new car would cost me. Anyway, I would like to thank MGUY for giving me the clarity to do the right thing.

    $100,000 for a new car? You don't have to buy a Ferrari. 😂 I'm in Canada and bought a new Subaru Legacy for $43,000 cdn. a couple of years ago. Near the top of the line model too.

    @my3dviews That is the price of the car I wanted. I wanted a ISUZU D-MAX or FORD 150, but the Ford is almost 180,000 USD here. The IZUZU is about 100K. Remember MORE than half of the price in norway is taxes. They even have a horse-power tax that is insane. (BTW: A FERRARI GTB Assetto Fiorano 830 HK wil cost you 503,000 USD in Norway).

    @hpsychopath8795 Wow, those are crazy prices for normal vehicles. My car only had 5% tax on it. Over half tax is outrageous. You probably have way more expensive gasoline/petrol too. Where I am it is $1.19cdn/litre. Just checked. A Ford F-150 is under $50,000 Canadian here.

    I would add two things. Just a quick search of KZread will reveal a mountain of "will it run?" videos of people finding old conventional cars, trucks, farm tractors and even heavy construction vehicles that have been left neglected for decades and with a little know-how they are able to get them running again. The other thing I would like to add, is if you look through the ads for used cars, you can easily find old Lincoln Towncars that served in car services with close to half a million miles on the odometer and they are still highly sought after. Imagine even a brand new EV left abandoned for 5 or 10 years. Instead of a serviceable vehicle you would have a dangerous, highly toxic brick!

    Yeah as if gas cars don't break down if you don't use them lol EVs are simpler so getting them to run would probably be easier. Batteries are a different thing altogether but we won't really know until we try it right?

    @@Spar_Hawk You should boycott food grown with diesel, carried on diesel trucks on roads made of asphalt. You could really show them! Not to mention throw away all tech you have including your BEV which took as much diesel to make as an ICE car and it's fuel for 5-7 years!

    ​@Spar_Hawk He says subsidies without actually knowing what he is talking about. Big difference between subsidies and tax breaks. Oil industry get tax rate discounts that other industries don't get, these tax breaks encourage energy companies to produce within the USA. Which keeps fuel prices cheaper for USA consumers, if energy is cheap then more money can be circulated in the USA economy, which in turn allows people to have more disposable income. However, Biden has caused energy production cost to skyrocket, now low and mid/low income families aren't spending, this will cause a collapse. A true subsidy is the government paying a portion of a company or industry's costs, by directly funding them with cash. An example is the EV bonus/ rebate paid by the Biden administration. He has taken tax payer money and given to upper middle and high income people to encourage them to buy an EV. The sad part is the EV makers raise the price of the vehicle to take 70% of this "rebate" aka government subsidy.

    Imagine paying the equivalent of $500 to put a new battery in 4 year old iPhone. Not only is it completely cost inefficient but - you're putting a new battery into software that is 4 years old... practically ancient in today's standards. This is why putting all of these screens and gizmos in cars these days has lead to them becoming consumer electronics devices (which is why the auto manufacturers show up at CES now) which are inherently disposable. Great plan for the environment!

    @@nothingtoseaheardammit Tell me how much you have to pay to put a new battery into an iPhone. I don't believe Apple would charge you less than 500 bucks. Not because the battery costs that much, but because that is "capitalist liberty". It's the same if you try to change a headlight on a new car model. You will have to pay over 1,000 bucks, even if the production costs of that headlight is below 25 bucks. As an example, have a look at this "special offer" from Scuderia (original parts): 1 4T0941003G LED HEADLIGHT £2,941.44 1 1 4T0941004H Headlamp RIGHT FRONT IN STOCK £5,948.70 1 On this, you have to add shipping costs and garage costs. The replacement will end up over £10,000.

    @@peejayem4700 No, because typically, EVs burst into flames because the battery is short in the liquid which cools them and causes thermal runaway. Otherwise, it is unlikely that the batteries will actually short because there is nothing to make a uncontrolled bridge. Not to say that it is impossible, but if you look through the history, you can see that in general Nissan Leaf vehicles are not likely to burst into flames. This has only been a thing since the liquid cooled battery vehicles have become more prevalent.

    Look, just because there were EVs around in the late 1800's and early 1900's is meaningless. a) They weren't massed produced in any significant numbers b) They had a top speed of like 15mph c) The range of them was incredibly small d) The cost was almost triple that of a comparable ICE vehicle (In 1912, a gasoline car cost only $650, while an electric car sold for $1,750) and e) not everyone even had access to electricity for their house in those days let alone the ability to charge a car

    @@jasonpapai Range still sucks relative to how long it takes to "refuel", cost is still substantially higher (especially factoring in the subsidies and corporate welfare), and while pretty much everyone has electricity to their home there are a lot of people living in places without electricity near where they park.

    Not only that, he says that over discharging i.e. letting the battery get below 20%, also damages the battery (7:30). Imagine driving an ICE where the fuel tank gets smaller as the car ages, you’ve got to keep the tank between 20% and 80% full else that shrinking accelerates, and your ICE has a maximum advertised range of only 192 miles anyway (2:20)! In reality that’s perhaps a 160 mile range (?). 80% of that is just 128 miles!

Paying 20k more than a comparable vehicle 5. every time you fuel up an EV, the fuel tank gets smaller and smaller. Battery degeneration. 6. Poor resale value. The porsche Taycan turbo S model Ev, loses over $100,000 dollars in 4 years time. That's $100k!, or $25k per year. 7. Reduced performance in cold, highway. 8. Higher repair costs 9. Awful charging network experiences in the weather without restrooms 10. Higher insurance rates 11. Replacing tires more frequently. Michelin states that tires wear out 20% faster on an Ev, and could be as high as 50% faster! Ev tires made for ev's, cost 20 to 30% more, than regular tires for ice cars. As Ev tires wear out, they leave behind more tiny particles of rubber than normal ice cars. This causes more pollution. 12. Death by autopilot 13. $25k - $35k battery 14. Low km range per tank of energy. 15. must wait in-line 1-2 hrs to charge. 16. Then wait more time to charge, while charging. 17. Spontaneous combustion, with no way to put out the fire storm. 18. If they catch fire in a tunnel, many people will die. 19. People without a pro charger system or a parking spot at their house, will run an extension cord to the road, which is dangerous and could lead to people tampering with your charging setup (super slow charging at the road) 20. If you're in California, you won't be able to charge your car past 4pm because of a shortage of electricity supply on the cheesy grid. 21. It is not actually "green". The pollution is made at the power station, and during the manufacturing process, not the car. In advance of the Cop26 climate conference in Glasgow in 2021, Volvo released figures claiming that greenhouse gas emissions during production of an electric car are nearly 70% higher than when manufacturing a petrol one. 22. Only 5% of used junk batteries get recycled, the rest go directly into the bin. It's cheaper to mine for new minerals. 23. Chhinna actually does 70% of all the refining of the minerals and production of the batteries. 24. Minerals are becoming more and more scarce, and the cost will only go up, not down. 25. Some countries where they mine for lithium, actually use a very big boat load of fresh water to only produce a ton of lithium, so they are afraid of running out of water. It takes over 2 million liters of fresh clean water to produce 1 ton of lithium. 26. Ev cars will soon not be able to drive in tunnels or be able to park in underground parking garage and probably will eventually void your house insurance if you park it in your personal garage.... 27. You can't charge your battery at super stations when it is bitter cold out. 28. If a fire truck comes to put out an Ev fire, all the chemicals go directly into the sewer system, poisoning everything. They need tons of water to slow down the burn. They can't put them out. They are only trying to prevent over things near by from catching fire. 29. Ok, there is 2 good things; regenerative braking, which charges the battery while you are slowing down on the highway, which saves your brakes from much wear. 30. Loss of fuel tax revenue, so now the roads will only get worse, not better. 31. in Dublin, huge generators are being used to charge EV buses, due to electrical grid strain. buses in Athlone also cannot be put on charge until midnight, for the same reason. Bus Éireann is saying that they can't charge their buses until 11pm for the same reason, and to avail of a lower tariff. 32. Not everyone on earth even has electricity to charge their cars. What are they supposed to do in 2035? It's easy to get a bucket of fuel to power up a regular car. 33. VCE, or "vapour cloud explosion" is very bad. If any battery, typically anything larger than an E-scooter battery, and especially only "half" charged. If a problem occurs in the cells, it might not catch on fire right away. Instead, a cloud appears, and then may be ignited a short period afterwards. There are 2 different types of vapour clouds that appear; heavier and lighter than air, which form will be dominate, can not be predicted yet. This produces a bomm. 34. For Ev transport trucks, they aren't allowed to carry the same payload as a diesel truck, because of the massive weight of the battery. The owner of the Ev truck therefore loses potential profit, every day. They also lose more profit for the waiting times for charging that Ev truck. The driver will get paid to charge the truck, which in turn forces the owner of the truck to lose more money. 35. Ev cars are more likely to be written off, if they experience a minor collision. After the collision, something could have upset the structural integrity of the battery. 36. Ev cars lie to you. If you are bold enough to go out on a decent road trip and its 210 miles, one way, and your Ev tells you that your battery will last you 223 miles, there had better be no hills, or excessively cold out.... You'll probably get stranded, trying to get to the charger, at the end of the trip. Ev's have left many families stranded already. 37. Ev's and their batteries, will soon need their very own "passport". With all info about them when born, and current info about them (power output, resistance, mineral composition, etc.) 38. Thieves stealing charging cables, will soon make it impossible to "fuel" an Ev car. They take a long time to replace the cables, just to have them cut again for scrape money. 39. Cars were typically being made lighter and lighter using aluminum and or fiberglass and or carbon fiber, to reduce emissions and pollution. Ev's are only getting heavier and heavier, causing more pollution than ever. Remember, an ev's pollution is made at the power station and the dump, not at the actual Ev, except for the tire particles as mentioned above. 40. More on spontaneous combustion of the battery. What if you had 3 kids strapped into car seats, in the back seat ,which kid do you rescue? More fires start so fast, there is hardly any time for even the driver to escape, let alone 3 kids strapped in. 41. There must be a reason that Boeing 747's aren't battery powered.... Until jets are battery powered, I'll be sticking to fossil fuels for my mode of transportation. 42. Can't bring an Ev up north in the woods, nor any battery powered chain saws, where there are no grids to charge them up. You would need a huge amount of solar panels to get you anywhere. 43. Even Mr. Bean says; "I love electric vehicles - and was an early adopter. But increasingly I feel duped". "When you start to drill into the facts, electric motoring doesn’t seem to be quite the environmental panacea it is claimed to be." "It seems a perverse choice of hardware with which to lead the automobile’s fight against the climate crisis." Mr. Bean is a smart man. 44. There isn't a used market for ev's. How are teenagers going to buy and insure a $50K Ev... (take your pick: either $50K new or a $20K used EV that needs a $20K battery replacement in a few years)?? A teenager can buy a used $1k ice car and be set up for 4 years, no problem. There's this Ev van company called "Arrival", in the UK. It's been around for 10 years or so. It was worth around $13 billion just 2 years ago.... They didn't sell a single unit, and are now bankrupt. Hertz rental car company backed out of a huge tesla Ev purchase of 100,000 ev's. Soon after, Hertz backed out of a huge purchase of 65,000 Chinese polestar ev's. They did that because ev's cost to much to own, and too much to operate. Ev's (External combustion vehicles) suck, and it's a bridge to nowhere. But they do sometimes convert themselves into "internal combustion", but sadly, they can only do that 1 time.

    Yes, if you equate that to proper maintenance it means a properly maintained EV can only utilize 60% of it's range on a daily basis. Cut that in half in winter months in a cold climate like what I live in.

    There was a entire train car load of vehicles that burned in Bakersfield, CA yesterday. I think those car carriers hold 10-12 cars. No reports yet of what kind of vehicles, EVs or internal combustion. Just an FYI.

    Interesting about the Taycan. V8 Supercars in Australia has one as their new safety car. I noted on Speedcafe comments that it was a nice shiny Milk Float. Someone replied that it would blow the door's off my Falcon XR8 Sprint. This may well be the case but at least the XR8 is going up in value and it can be driven from full to empty and refuelled in around 5 minute's. The sound emitted from the 5 litre V8 is also something that I will always savour...

    It might blow the doors off the Sprint in a drag, but the Taycan is only good for a couple of hundred km, then it's recharge or it's toast. And you'd probably need new tyres too.

    I was talking to a towey just an hour ago while he strapped one down. Did he like towing EV'S ? He said toweys avoid them, to risky if it catches fire on their truck. If it starts to smoke they dump it as quick as possible.

The technology is evolving fast that’s why we saw an increased range every couple of months. This situation feels like when the first ice cars appeared and people would still rely on horses.

    A key factor in any fashionable luxury product is, by definition, its objective uselessness in comparison with purchase price and cost of ownership. Living in the Stuttgart area, where between 25-50% of the population are voting "Green" - but where we also make the Taycan and many Mercedes and Audi models, I can see how this works out in reality: it's not the family (edit: car) that is an EV, it's always a full-size luxury EV, parked on millionaire's hill, usually the 3rd or 4th car, right next to the ICE convertible and an ICE-powered SUV. *So, no surprise there: EVs are designed to be luxury items for the rich and very rich - while the rest of the population is supposed to use public transport or not travel at all.*

    Norway shows BEV for most cars & public transport is economical & rational - in small countries - if coupled with cold ready charging & battery recycling. If subsidies moved from legacy energy to new options (not Hydrogen) it speeds the transition. Despite half truths by the fossil fuel lobbies & media (grid load, fires, metal limits) they know time is ticking as ranges & charging times improve. Norway is rich with plenty of hydro power so is ahead of the curve, but BEV costs are trending down (2022Q4 below luxury) while union made ICE & gas costs trend up.

    When used construction machinery is sold online often they post the chemical analysis of the engine oil as well. This is a very good way to tell the engines condition and if things like coolant have leaked in. One time the Toyota dealer didn't change my engine oil but charged me and only put an extra additive in. I had the oil sampled and sent for analysis and you could see everything including the additive. Toyota were superb, a team came to see me and they made the dealer increase my warranty to 200K and 10 free services. The SUV is now at 400K and still runs just fine.

    Look on the bright side. Although the second car has lost 51% in its first four years, the buyer didn’t pay any “Gas Guzzler Tax” (2:27). No tax, just $101,050 in depreciation - it’s a bargain! The buyer just pays Sucker Tax! And that’s with an advertised range of 192 miles, so what’s that? 170 in reality and half that in winter? That’s two downsides for you.

    My customer had a model S... 7 years old, 60,000 miles. Battery failed Tesla charged him £32,000 for a new battery. He had to wait 8 months for the battery. It was for sale since August 2023, not even a call in 5 months. He bought a new ICE car. He's had it with EVs Last week to took the Tesla to the scrapyard. They charged him for disposal.

    What’s really funny, is that if this were an ice, either diesel or gas, he would easily get his asking price! 90K on an ice is nothing nowadays. Besides it is easy to test the engine and drivetrain performance to ascertain the condition of said components, not so much so with an EV.

    @@XenonJohnD A mechanical engine will rattle or make a weird noise before it fails... A battery or speed, charge controller wont. The only way to test the battery is test it for charging, test it for discharging, test it for its charge storing capability... All those take much longer than a 10 min test drive. but failing to do so can cost you 10s of thousands.

    There is 'pilot' plants in the UK, Australia, Europe and the US. But none are actually doing it commercially. A battery storage/ recycle facility in France blew up big time last week.

    That's what you get when a major part of the new vehicle price is a consumable/disposable item. In ICE vehicles such items are clutch and brake pads, air and oil filters etc. and only a small part of the value. When it's a battery costing tens of thousands to replace, you have a big problem.

    I've been dealing with 18650 lithium batteries for decades with enthusiast flashlights and vapes. I've had about 60 18650 and 21700 cells over the last 20 years. I've learned a lot about charging rates, temperature, state of charge, voltage, CV and CC charging, pulse charging, using good smart chargers and using a 4 probe battery resistance meter (YR-1035) to understand basic changes in the battery health over time. A good example are Panasonic NCR180650B. I owned 20 of these back when I started. They were all great for a few years. Then one of them started showing higher resistance. I could verify this with 4 of them on the charger and putting my fingers on each one that one cell would be hotter. Eventually another one had the same issue. I brought them all to a local battery disposal place a few years later and bought another brand had the same issues where 1-2 of them would go bad slowly over many years. Now I'm using LG HG2 18650's and no issues yet. Point being with 8000 of these in some vehicles some will degrade eventually taking down the pack. It will be the same for any lithium technology, batteries degrade over time no matter how you treat them.

    @@practicalguy973 18650 batteries, in my understanding, are notoriously variable in their reliability. I was genuinely astonished to learn that EV batteries consist of thousands of these. I can only hope they aren't sourcing them based on bid price. When I buy 18650's for use in portable electronics projects, I usually buy them 10-20 at a time because guaranteed there will always be a few bad ones in the batch. Usually it's not integrity issues so much as they just don't hold a charge or enough of a charge. Of course I buy the dodgy ones from China, that happen to come with a flashlight. Maybe Elon knows better where to get them.

What they'll have is 2500 pounds of high value battery ore to be ground up, sorted and remanufactured into a new battery with even better specs than it was 25 years earlier when it was first built. It'll go through life one as your EV battery, then when the car is finished, it'll power your uncle George's cabin, before he sells it for a pretty penny to the local battery recycler who will gladly pay top dollar for it. Or, go on believing we'll extract 15k worth of battery and then just toss it aside?

    The EV saga reminds me of those concert promoters who have a real dog of an artist to promote. They saturate a radio station with endless ads declaring that "International super star Fred Smudge will be performing at the Rat Hole Theater" and you "must book NOW to avoid disappointment". After 6 weeks of running ads every ad break, they suddenly cease and quietly announce that refunds will be available soon.

    All this is just the tip of the iceberg. Try getting insurance for an EV, for example. Or putting one on a ferry or in an underground carpark. Like playing Russian roulette? Charge your EV in your garage overnight and almost inevitably it's likely to incinerate you and your home while you sleep at some point. There are plenty more hidden delights to EV ownership, and a few moments thought or investigation will reveal most of them. The bottom line is that the EV wet dream is an incurably broken model that cannot survive. In five years, you won't even be able to give away an EV.

And how much them panels cost ya 20k+, better hope the weather is also on your side heaven forbid things like cloud cover, seasons, rain or night happens, probably why the majority of solar farms are built right on a natural gas deposit which they must use to create power for the facility when nature just doesn't want to cooperate.

    Australia has had BEVs since 2013, 200k on the road in 2023..... number of charging related fires in 11 years?..........exactly 0. Total BEV related fire incidents of all types in 2023? .....4 (one was arson, 1 was a damaged battery left out in the elements), that's 20 fires per million cars to be on the harsh side and include the arson and detached battery. Australia also had 20.7million ICE cars in 2022, number of ICE car fires in 2021 and 2022 combined?.......44,091 that's 1,065 fires per million cars. I will sleep easy with my BEV charging in my garage overnight thanks. Oh....forgot, the insurance on my 2020 Model 3 is 20% cheaper than the car it replaced a 2019 Audi A4 45TFSI.

    @@user-ni6le7hk9y It depends who and where. I went from a M3 to a i4 m50, insurance is lower, taxes are way lower from 2400€ to 140€, no fuel, charging cost me 0.14€ kw/h versus 130€ tank. No maintenance cost except brakes and washer fluids. 30k€ cheaper than my m3. I mean, if you are poor, like it seems to be the case, maybe.

    I am sure that the figure quoted in the article to replace a battery is the amount the original manufacturer buys the pack for - not the cost for a separate replacement battery. Replacement parts are usually much more costly - they go through a completely different supply chain with completely different mark-ups and profit margins. And of course, in the U.K., there is the infamous VAT (I assume other countries have similar purchase taxes). When quoting “prices” many professional trade articles publish the “trade price” which excludes the VAT that the customer has to pay. And in addition to battery cost, there is the cost of the technical labour to remove the old battery and installing a new one - these labour costs also bearing the statutory and infamous VAT for the poverty stricken U.K. government. And knowing some dealerships I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t also charge you for an oil filter and six litres of oil and “consumables” (all plus vat) as part of the standard ticket price of the service! So your “20,000 pounds” replacement battery will more likely cost you around 30,000 pounds once you have finished paying for everything. Of course, none of these prices includes the cost of disposing of the old battery - these costs may also be added - if not now, they will be in future - as they pile up and become a disposal and pollution hazard. You can’t just stick them in an oven and melt them down as scrap iron or recycled aluminium -max you would for most components of an ICE car. Yes, I know, “it runs on electricity therefore it cannot be polluting”. Sure, whatever you want to imagine.

    Five to twenty thousand only gets you a refurbished battery, in that case rebuilt using second hand cells. New batteries are not available beyond a models production run, and in many cases not stocked at all (GM, Tesla etc). No manufacturer wants to stock batteries that pose such an excessive risk, that degrade with time and require ongoing maintenance to retain a storage charge as the integrated BMS still draws a minor parasitic load when the battery is not even installed. When EV owners consider replacement batteries they usually have no idea those replacements are second hand.

    Tesla can and opften do replace batteries under warranty with a refurbished battery, but if you have an out of warranty battery swap Tesla will exchange the 60kwh battery in a RWD model 3 with a brand new battery for $16k AUD / $10k USD fitted including labour and taxes (10% GST in Australia) because it is still current production stock at the supplier.

    My experience with batteries (Lipo) for what it is worth, is that they degrade over time depending on usage, of course. But they charge ok (not fast charged), they read ok after use but actual performance falls off over time. This fall off is not linear but tends toward exponential. When this occurs I relegate them to other non critical usage. Ask any model plane flyer and they will tell you similar and they have years of experience.

    Yup.. I build my own quads and tri-copters etc I use old batteries when Im flight testing a new model. If it hits the floor hard with an old battery it doesnt matter, it was a junk battery anyway. A new battery will give 20 to 30 mins An old battery 5 to 10 mins at best.

    Used cell phones can still have the battery replaced. It's not user friendly but it's doable. Costs a bit too much to bring it to a shop though IMO haha. I miss the days of having easy to replace batteries on phones.

My wife's iphone went up after around 2 months after battery replacement and it always felt hot during recharging which in hindsight should have been a clue. She lost so much content on that phone. There's likely going to be the same shoddy aholes in for a fast buck attached to the EV battery replacement industry.

    well when you skimp on safety and quality for your knockoff products to try to undercut and make as much as possible you dont make a product that is uh safe at all. must have been that lack of a overcharge protection that made the battery go poof.

E-bikes are part of a sector of technology that experienced such rapid growth while only having a single manufacturing option (China). High demand, low pay, virtually unregulated. It's been a free-for-all. While the majority of the bad products seem to be distributed in China, you just don't want to take the chance with your life, family, or property. Buy a weather-proof, fire resistant shed and store them outside. That small investment will be cheaper than any insurance adjustments if a fire breaks out.

    I'm laughing my a$$ off - $200K for an EV. I think it was Geoff Buys Cars who did an analysis of EV depreciation and found that dealers were listing low mileage cars that were essentially new for about $10 - $20K less than the price of a new one. This was was/is an attempt to prop up the value of used cars. The reality is that the EV Porsche was depreciating faster than it goes from 0 - 60. His friend who'd purchased a new one less than a year before discovered it was worth less than $30K and dropping weekly. High Discharging Current from fast acceleration while driving - I LOVE it! EVidiots are always bragging about how fast these things can accelerate - I love harassing Tesla's and know the faster they go the more they discharge their battery. Now I know that challenging them to hard accelerate is damaging it. That's awesome! Thanks!

    As well as EVs many newer ICE cars now have digital panel controls. I recently saw a video showing that if these develop a flaw, which they can easily do, you can end up with no way to control anything and a multi-thousand dollar bill to restore functionality. Built in obsolescence is going mainstream.

    The only way to check the condition of a Li-ion battery (no matter how big or small) that I'm aware of is drain it until completely empty, then charge it and monitor how much you can charge into it. The more degraded the battery is, the less energy it can absorb. The more it is fast-charged or fast-drained, the quicker it will deteriorate, and it's ability to fast-charge and fast de-charge will also deteriorate. Spotting a battery that has been overheated can only be done cell by cell...

    As a retired Auto Electrician one concern for me that seems to be overlooked by most people is the bearing life in the motors and ancillaries of these vehicles. I used to service electric forklift drive motors and none left the workshop without new bearings regardless of the cost of the bearings.

    I am so glad some agency is taking into the fact that gas/diesel vehicles have to pay road tax and present here in Maryland to my knowledge. The EV’s get to use the roads free. The fact that this whole EV thing is being piecemeal without true thinkingis utterly amazing to me. Not counting all the problems with sourcing the battery material getting rid of the batteries and of everything else.

    ICE cars = Cheap repairs due to only having to replace the worn out or faulty parts, and whats more in many case's you coould do it at home... EV's = Extremely costly repairs if you actually can get them done.. And there is NO way round that.

    The governments everywhere have pushed the EVs very hard their pet media never published or disclosed the negatives to EV ownership I mean they had me sold 3 years earlier I thought my ice car would be worthless, , the came down like a ton of bricks on VW for modestly embellishing the MPG on their diesel cars ,but every EV car manufacturer has outright lied about their range, cost of repairs, installation of new home charger, insurance, poor cold weather battery life ….thankyou for sharing this and saving us from the same experience.

    As I have said before offer me a top-of-the-range 5-year-old low-mileage EV for a couple of grand and you may have a deal. At that price if I get more than a couple of years out of it then great. If not it may have been worth the gamble, but the crusher will be its next destination. EVs are disposable products similar to most things that we buy these days so of course they make great sense to governments and manufacturers in theory especially if we are one day confronted by no real choice in the matter. This stands to reason that the widespread use of EVs would rapidly become an environmental disaster of biblical proportions even if the competition for raw materials did not end up causing WWIII. In a survey of Norwegian EV owners, a very low proportion of them claimed that they bought an EV to save the planet. They bought them because the cost of running them was cheaper and owning one personally suited their needs. They are also allowed to drive them in bus lanes which would turn most people's heads. Their domestic electricity is far cheaper than that of the UK, and their petrol is more expensive. The various tax breaks and other subsidies are also appreciably greater in Norway and much of their electricity for their relatively tiny population comes from hydro electrical generation. In other words, these people do not live in Germany the UK, the USA Canada, or Australia. They do however have one of the highest suicide rates in the world, whether or not this has anything to do with their high rate of EV ownership, I could not possibly comment.

    The problem with used EVs is the battery life remaining. The true problem is that our current batteries just don’t have a modular design that facilitates easy partial replacements. Because of the weight and size, these are being used as structural components of the car. To replace the battery you have to replace not old the battery buy a structural component of the car. We need batteries that can easily be replaced in pieces so instead of a $20k full replacement we have a $500 module replacement.

    Relatively simple for the right battery tech to test the battery condition (at least as far as feasible), I'd be more worried about all the 100s of little plug in and throw away modules, most of them can't be checked effectively. Most would be made to last as long as warranty.

    @@stevedevice1866 nope, I am an electronics engineer and actual “life remaining” could not be determined with any sort of accuracy. There are some simple tests that include charging and discharging and internal resistance measurements. But like the clip states, how was the battery charged? (Over Charged or under charged, Fast charged or slow charged.) There are a plethora of different scenarios, so no accurate statement as to the actual condition of the battery could ever be provided. At least none that even the most competent and experienced “battery technician” or organisation would sign off on.

    @@brucewoods9377 Other EV issues aside, I doubt EVs have this already, perhaps they do: A charge and discharge log in service mode. Surely the number and type of charge and discharge cycles could be logged. These are electric/electronic/computerised vehicles after all, so tracking such shouldn't be all that difficult should it? Though I'm yet to be convinced on the absolute efficacy of the EV model, such feature would surely add credibility to the status of the battery in a used EV.

    Because flash light batteries only last so long. People should already understand that about EVs now that people are aware that they operate on flash light batteries, the value will drop faster and faster as the reality of the flash light battery powered EV cars as this reality becomes more known. I find it funny how the experts won't call them flash light batteries, and try to make it sound all non -tweakered up as if it's a high tech battery something and not the reality of flash light batteries "technology"

    I have always said from the start, if I need to replace the starter battery on my car or the leisure batteries on my caravan I will always buy new not second hand. So who in their right mind would buy a second hand battery car. Even rechargeable batteries that you use in a torch, radio and camera etc: gradually don’t last as long over a period of time.

    @@peejayem4700 All rechargeable batteries have a life and will eventually give up the ghost. With a second hand EV you have no idea how charges it has had and much longer it will go for. As least with an ICE you can strip the engine and rebuild it at a reasonable cost. The price of a replacement battery is ridicules. Don’t get me wrong I believe in climate change and want to save the planet but EV’s are not the answer. At the moment there is a rush by vote chasing politicians to look green by backing the EV movement before the infrastructure is ready for them.

    I’m currently driving a mild hybrid 2002 Jeep. It uses a 12v battery to supply spark to make the ICE perform better and start easier. I find this setup quite reliable. Side note, the battery can be replaced for $130.

    Whether or not battery condition reports become standard, the fact still remains that EVs depreciate faster and become uneconomic to repair when the battery fails. Even if manufacturers make the batteries modular and easier to replace individual cell packs in case of failure, it will still be too expensive to replace the whole battery at end of life.

    No you haven't. Cost wise: BEV trending down by those making volume (2022Q4 below luxury), union ICE and gas trending up.

    You understate the battery expense issue. At least certain Hyundai's and Kia's have battery replacement costs that exceed the cost of a new car -- around $60,000 for the battery replacement. Even NEW Hyundais that suffer minor damage to their batteries are written off as a total loss.

    The average time it take peoples to upgrade to new car is around 7 to 10 years. EVs don't last 5 years so they don't last long enough to become used vehicles.

    My 67 year old American V8 engine was junk. So I organised a full complement of new parts, which are still available, & a machine shop/engine reconditioner to return it to new engine specs. The total cost to repower my car, with an 'as new' engine, & have a reasonable expectation that it will remain serviceable for the next twenty to thirty years? A whole lot LE$$ that the cheapest new EV battery currently available today. A lot less. Additionally, I can confidently store the car in my garage without the constant fear of self immolation while I sleep. Even if this engine should become a lump of unserviceable scrap someday, I can easily repower with something newer, even from a different brand & model of car.. Can I re- power an older, but perhaps much loved, EV with a newer generation battery from wrecking yard, out of a different brand of car while looking for a performance upgrade in five years time? Sorry, I was choking at my own joke there. So, will I be enthusiasticly plunging into the depths of EV ownership anytime soon? What do you think.

    Yep a full engine rebuild is far cheaper than buying a new EV battery. Completely tanks any argument the EV fantatics have about affordability.

    @@Ziegfried82 If one treats his repaired/overhauled or reconditioned engine kindly, one should expect a long service life. With todays oils & filters, engines can easily run out to 300000Km. Not too sure about EV battery life, but that number feels like a "bridge too far" in my view.

    The IPCC report admits it's not certain if C02 does anything to effect the climate. The question isn't why can't EV's be a better solution, it's why even bother with such a small contributor vs all others. We'll never run out of Oil. Never.

    There are three aspects to selling any new product, quality, service and price, and you only need two of those to be successful. When your selling “used” it all comes down to just price and history, not a great outlook for EVs.

    I don't know what hybrid that Mercedes uses, but my last reconditioned Toyota battery was $900, and that was replaced nearly 6 years ago with a 3 year warranty, so almost double the warranteed life.

    Last night, a visitor related that they stopped to assist a motorist whose car had broken down. They stranded motorist asked for petrol, but their car was a 100%-EV. When that was pointed out, the guy opened the boot and revealed a gasoline fuelled generator. Now I am no expert, but somehow, I suspect that roadside charging would require more than a small boot sized ( single phase? ) ? 10-Amp ? generator to do the charging. Those who know better, can correct me - please.

    New subscriber via Macmaster, you have just opened another can of worms, from what I can see there are so many Ifs to the condition of the Battery, its a minefield id not want to cross, even with all of today's testing equipment you've still got to rely on a decent mechanic that has been trained and understands every aspect of the battery and the car its in, I'm sure these tests are going to cost a small fortune adding to the cost of the car, and who pays for all of this, the Customer always pays, and still there comes into my mind the shady or uninformed mechanic who thinks he knows whats going on, all this then you have to evaluate the rest of the car. No matter what you say, the EV lovers will pass over this information as once you are a true believer its unlikely anyone will change your mind. Nice post Simon, an eye opener for me and I've been around this subject for a a few years, and I've driven more than a few EV's, it reinforces my beliefs, that EV's in the most part are a waste for most people, an expensive Government experiment at the very least. Someones making money here, as always we have to follow the money.

    Another issue with battery conditioning information is that if the info suggests the battery may fail, and this info becomes the average, then the market will quickly decide that it isn't worth it. In other words, it's probably in the battery maker/car manufacturer's best interest to NOT have detailed info about a battery. There are many engineers and economists who have stated that when you count the pollution created from the moment raw materials are harvested to the moment the vehicle is fully recycled, the pollution is (statistically) tied with ICE vehicles. It's highly probable all this foolishness won't do a thing to reduce pollution, which is the only reason to switch to electrically powered machines.

    Problem is also with capacity of EACH cell SEPARATELY. If a single cell have 20% capacity, while other have 95% capacity. Charger will try to charge this single cell beyond 20%, damaging it even further. Even if charged above, that charge will pretty much immediately (within minutes) vanish, and during EV usage this cell WILL damage other cell via reverse current (since it's low it will take charge from other cells in the same "bank"). Usually (for Prius 2) it's possible to check state of each cell via generic IO cables/plug, and just switch those degraded cells for new ones. It costs much less to do so, but Prius 2 have VERY SMALL hybrid battery, i.e. 8.8kWh (so about 8 times smaller than usual EVs), and it's limited to 20% - 80% range (so probably more around 5kWh, so 12times smaller), to avoid deep charge/discharge. That's why Prius 2 Hybrid battery DO have a long life.

    When EV manufacturers tell you that they will be producing longer range batteries that change quicker and wonder why nobody wants to buy an EV now ! It's like saying buy your BetaMax new don't wait for VHS! I'll wait!

    Hi, I must admit I have thought of this. I have a friend who has a Tesla Y he nearly always charges from home and rarely supercharges ,perhaps 3-4 times a year when he comes up to London and when he does so only for 15-20 minutes. He also keeps his batteries within the recommended 25-80% ish range. He is a typical EV owner for me in that his mileage is low and local and I would buy off him as I know he looks after his car. What you state is a good point. Regular fast charging destroys batteries, my father was a master electrician and he always said the best way to charge a battery is as slowly as possible and avoid rapid charging and he knew best!!

    I enjoy your channel every time you put a new video up, it’s full with great advice I have a question for you or I should be saying I need some advice, I’m a Taxi Driver in Ireland I currently have a diesel Taxi but I will have to change shortly. 90% of my work is city based with the other 10% mixed so here is my problem do I stick with diesel or do I get a Toyota Corolla Hybrid.     There's nothing so good at generating more problems, than a government mandated solution to a problem, that doesn't exist. (If the problem DOES exist, then the mandated government solution just adds myriads of new problems while making the original problem orders of magnitude worse.)

    It was dishonest of Recurrent to claim that a replacement EV battery costs $5,000 to $20,000. Many EV batteries are far more than that, a Hyundai Ioniq battery costs almost $40,000 (U.S.) plus installation cost and recycling fees - could be upwards of $45,000.
