Moat quads need to be moving for the pipes to get some air flow to cool them down, if it doesn't get red hot while riding it your good. For the overheating problem, leave the radiator cap off it needs to get the air out to the water jackets and the thermostat.

Header glow is extremely common on the YFZ. Look it up. Bump up the pilot jet a size or two, and possibly the main as well. Who knows if they ever dialed it in correctly, especially with the built engine.

While you had it apart there are 3 things you should have done. 1. A common mod with these carbureted yfz is called the zip tie mod. If I recall correctly there is almost like an accelerator pump lever that lags behind the throttle linkage in the carb, if you zip tie them together it gets rid of the bog when you snap the throttle. 2. You should have done the cam mod when re assembling it. I forget it it’s advancing or retarding the timing on the exhaust cam by 1 tooth. 3. The oil mod. Pre 2007 yfz had oiling issues. I had a 2008 years ago and did the zip tie and cam mod, made a big difference. Been out of the game for a while so I forget the exact details about everything. The glowing header is completely normal. If your still a little nervous just up the main to 175, also depends on your altitude. If you take the air box lid off it will run more lean if it’s leaning out now keep that in mind.

If it's a full aftermarket system, they tend to be thinner wall tubing, which can account for them to glow red, a lot of stock headers are double skinned , so you wouldn't see them glow. I'd get a temp gun and check the cylinder head, see how hot it's getting.

It’s normal for bone stock yfz 450 on the showroom floor right now to have the pipe glow at idle , on the older carb models like mine no matter how big you go on the pilot it will still glow. Even normal riding it glows after just a few minutes. Pipes are made thin on race bikes for weight so that’s the main reason they glow so easily. It’s also the reason i have exhaust wrap on my pipe so i don’t keep melting my riding boots lol.

Very known problem for the yfz, it's just running lean. Go bigger on the pilot but the yfz glow will never go away. Especially at idle, these aren't meant to idle, meant to be ridden hard and fast to keep it cool. The air pushing through the radiator will help tremendously.

I had power commander fuel injection module on it, with a pro design billet stage 2 intake and an HMF full exhaust and the computer was mapped for all the mods. Did all the work myself and the dealer double checked everything. Ran better than any quad I ever had and the head pipe ALWAYS glowed red. I never once had an issue with it. BTW, love your channel. Keep it up bud. My friends that all had yfz 450s, some with big bores n they glowed red too so I think you're good.

Most 450s come with a Keihin FCR carb, and when the choke is on it allows more fuel AND AIR into the mix, causing a high idle, but also warming up the engine way more efficiently without hurting it. They also bog a lot when the water temp is below 100. Bike is definitely running lean, from experience with bikes lean as can be from the factory and generally run hot, I've never experienced a glowing pipe, only discoloration.

Check the fuse for the fan, sometimes they're not very easy to find because they're under a rubber protective cover but if you follow the wires from the fan you should eventually find one because I had same issue with my Z400 I never heard the fan kick on and I rode the quad it never got hot but pipe would get cherry red if I sat still idling like this then one day a buddy broke down miles from anything so I had to pull him back and mine overheated so I stopped and let it cool down and we limped it back luckily I didn't hurt anything but I never once heard my fan kick on so it got me curious and then I found a blown fuse changed it and she has been working perfectly ever since...

I have a CRF450R with a Yoshimura exhaust that I recently installed and it glows exactly like yours does and I have a JD Jetting Kit also. It doesn't display any of the lean running symptoms and actually runs really good, but at idle after sitting and running for a couple minutes it is glowing red, looks pretty cool at night. Maybe turn the idle screw out some to richen it up at idle until it almost dies then in the other way lean till it almost dies then split the difference. May also read the plug too to know for sure.

I owned several early model YZ400Fs (98/99) and 426s (02) which are similar. The headers used to glow as well, one so bad it melted a radiator guard and caught fire (after market big gun “dual” header). That’s kind of the norm for those, something to do with limited air flow and the material for the header itself. The farting and popping is a concern, probably need to ride it, check the plug and evaluate as needed.

I'd run a 48 pilot 180 main get a ncvq needle and put the c clip on the 3rd or 4th notch going down towards the point. Also u don't have to take the carb off to change the pilot or main or the needle. Just losen it on the boot on the intake and rotate it so the 17mm plug on the bowl is accessible, remove it and u can access the pilot and main very easy and make quick getting changes. As for the needle just remove the seat and take the top of the carb off and access the needle that way.

With jetting on engines that have been monkeyed around with, I like to start high and work down in size 'til it stops bogging out. Always go high and work down, not the other way round... But that's just me ... Love your work, kid! 😃👍

My yfz get the header the a bit hot as well granted I can't see it glow like that due to it being a stock header but you can't try to jetting to help bring Temps down

  • @painistemporary4855
    @painistemporary48552 жыл бұрын

The kfx 450 does the same, and i think its because the header is made from titanium. And the 450's are made to race, it's normal to glow and once you start riding they will cool down

I've never seen a bike overheat that quick unless the radiator was clogged or you have a problem with your water pump, as far as the pipes getting hot well if it's aftermarket that's what happens. I'm sure you'll figure it out Joe you always do.

Header glow is normal.. make sure you bleed the coolant system when putting coolant back in. I had an 06 50th anniversary addition. Header glowed at idle.. My Raptor 700 does the same thing at idle and it's been dynoed.

very normal after a rebuilt on a yfz. fyi big bores normally need a smaller main. cc does not effect the air fuel ratio needed to run. in a nut shell the big bore creates more vacuum and pulls more fuel through a smaller jet. yfz always glow and it will get a little less as it breaks in. if you want more info on big bore jetting let me know

  • @redrider533

Realize this is an old video and I’m not reading all the comments. First this when you see a non stock pipe is to understand stock jetting it out the door. You needed to check the Yoshimura site for their recommended jetting for what looks to be a full system. Then is the air box and filter stock or modified. That will change things. Third, is the air boot between the carb tight and sealed. Any air leak is a big problem and will lean out the fuel mixture too. Last is the compression stock even with the big bore or high compression. Many factors dictate correct jetting. Something else on the YFZ Big Bores is that the water jacket in the cylinder is known to crack because it’s so thin.

1st thoughts are was the engine turned over on the bench and all the gears working, then was that done when in the frame with it all timed up with the head on? (Oh l thought it sounded clanky but maybe the audio) Was the oil pump pumping? Coolant circulating? If so maybe its a lean mixture causing premature heat build up so check for air leaks.
