    The reason for the different image results when using night mode is that you were focusing on a darker area of the scenery. When using night mode the AI will use the focused object/area as base for the intensity of the exposure optimization. You can easily try this at home and even during the day. Point the camera at your TV, activate night mode and focus on the black TV screen. The camera will try to perfectly expose the dark screen and the rest of the picture will become quite bright. Now take the same picture again also with night mode, but instead focus on the white wall behind your TV. The overall picture will look much darker. The same thing happened when you chose to focus on something "more contrasty" when using the night mode. Next time focus on a lighter area of the scenery and you'll not get an over exposed picture 😉

    I need help on the pro mode on my p30 pro about the best iso and shutter speed for low light and bright areas

  • @patrickw.11

    @patrickw.11

    @@vincentmallari238 If you are new to the Pro Mode, the best thing to do is to take a couple of pictures of different objects in bright and low light in Auto Mode first. Now look at the ISO and shutter speed stats in the gallery so you get a feeling for the different values. Then you can start experimenting with subtle changes to these values in Pro Mode. In my experience for daylight pictures you can always choose a lower ISO than the Auto Mode.

    F number is the aperture value. The lower the number the best for low light. If you shot in a bright day the F number would be high, probably between f16 to f22. It's like your eye, in bright sunlight you squint, and in darkness your eyes open wider to gain more light. Nice review by the way, well done 👍

    when you use the night mode(auto), meaning you did not make any adjustments on the ISO and shutter speed, the phone will automatically calculate the shutter and ISO in order to produce a balanced photo. like lowering the highlights and bringing up the shadows. the moment you adjusted the shutter and ISO in Night mode, the AI algorithm does not kick in. hence you get a brighter photo but has blown out the highlights.

    I think I know what happened: The night mode captures multiple images and stiches them together to create a final image: that's what you're seeing when it's slowly getting brighter. If you put the shutter speed on 20 seconds it will capture multiple different (with different ISO and shutter speed) images for 20 seconds When using night mode on auto the phone will calculate the right ISO and shutter speed and use it's own algorithms to balance highlights and dark areas. When manually selecting night mode settings the phone will still capture the multiple images but wont use the smart algorithms for balancing the shot which will result in blown out areas. When using the pro mode the phone takes a "real" long exposure (which is why you can't see the progress while its taking the picture) resulting in a brighter image but with even more blown out parts.

  • @Antagon666

    Yes, I've seen the same thing myself on P20. The automode sucks in extreme low-light(unfixable noise, red tint, red vignetting etc.), but manual time gives much better results, which are comparable to long exposure in manual mode...

  • @markchadbourne8049

    @markchadbourne8049

    That's right, it's why using the same settings manually will get a different result. Also, the gentleman needs to focus in the right place, about 1/3rd into the scene for better sharpness across the scene.

    The reason why we see such different results accross all the different modes isn't because of the focus point as another user pointed out, as you were picking focus at roughly the same area. Instead, you should keep in mind that this technology can be used both with and without a tripod, so Huawei has made sure that you can still get impressive pseudo long exposure night shots by just holding the phone in your hands. That means that, while in night mode and using auto settings, the phone will cancel the motion that is caused by your hands shaking, while preserving that long exposure look but also reducing the overall brightness of the image. This is why you're also able to see the preview and the countdown, it's pretty much shooting a lot of pictures and combining them (doing so called photo stacking, as popularized by Google's HDR+ on Pixel phones). When you input manual settings in night mode, the countdown goes away and the phone works just like in manual mode when you have a tripod. If you had the phone in your hands, you would have seen that the image was shakier.

    On the second picture the camera took a broader range of shots each having different exposure levels and then stitched them together so you got a brighter picture normally this happens when the HDR is activated. F is the focus length. Also if you look at the histogram when looking at the metadata you can see where the light range has been gathered from. If the histogram is bunched up to the right or the left the camera sensor has only picked up light from low or high areas of the spectrum when you see it as a long curve from one end to the other the camera sensor has picked up not just the low or high tones, but it has also picked up the mid tones which gives you more of a complete picture. The aperture or focal length can be the same on different pictures as can the ISO but there are other factors that can increase the range of light the sensor gathers

    Interesting to see how the phone makers have used clever processing to get some very good results. Of course as photographer I would always be a camera user, but I can see for many people that this is plenty good enough or them. Perhaps not surprising how badly camera sales have fallen since phone makers have improved greatly their processing. Most phones I have used (and some cameras not all) bias exposure to the AF point so that explains the differences. Would I buy this? Probably not but for users who are into photos and want a small size then I can see they would mostly ignore a dedicated camera good enough is enough for most! I'd be fairly worried if I were a camera company!

    f1.6 is for the close up subject, to obtain a blurred background, for landscape usually use f8-12, that is why your images have not focused area blurred

    Primary lens is fixed at f/1.6, everything else is software. You can easily find the specs online. In smartphones there is not aperture change for a lens, it is all done by software.

    If you have the correct information, you might understand, the difference between those two same metadata images with long exposure is just because, Huawei like many other phones relies on post processing and it plays a big role here. You get an enchanced image always and not the exact as in the exposure data. Which obviously you get with a normal camera.

    its not strange at all in the night mode. in auto you picked brighter point as a focus point and in the manual mode you picked much darker point so ai made a much brighter picture overall to brighten the dark focus point

    Come on the best one is the one with the night mode(auto), which has the best dynamic range and lighting balance(non blown away like the rest) but was out of focus. The one with auto mode and AI you said that is the best, it is only a lucky shot on focus but still burned the city lights.

    Can someone pls explain why we can't zoom in or out in the 40mp main sensor? Why only in 10mp?

  • @mathphotographer

    @mathphotographer

    5 жыл бұрын

    Excellent question: since the primary lens can do 40MP and the wide angle lens can do (native) 20 MP and the tele lens can do 8MP, if we are in 40MP resolution mode on primary lens there should be a soft button to click to wide angle or tele lens without going to settings and changing the resolution on the primary lens down to 10MP just to get the soft buttons for the wide angle or tele lenses back on screen ... maybe something to consider for Huawei for next firmware update. By the way, when zooming more than 10x the 40MP primary sensor is used in combination with the tele sensor to do the trick.

    Noel, here is a new datapoint I found out when digging into your question: If you go into Pro Mode and change in settings resolution to 40MP you get the wide angle and tele lens buttons on screen, so you can go to 16mm focal length (resolution then switches automatically to 20MP) and you can by pressing soft button zoom 5x (resolution then changes to 8MP automatically). If you again press the soft button for the primary lens (middle button on screen) resolution switches automatically back to 40MP. So this is much better than in normal photo mode with 40MP where we do not have soft zoom buttons on screen. However, you can not pinch-to-zoom ... at least on my phone pinch-to-zoom results in a message on screen that change of focal length can only be done via the three soft buttons on screen. Hope that helps :)

    If you could see at your 2nd picture, the 10mp with the AI mode on, the city in the foreground is blown by the lights, but with your 3rd picture, the night mode it settles that light to a natural(ish) view. And idk what you said when viewing the 3rd photo (the night mode) telling us that it is worse than the 2nd photo without even processing the picture.

  • @trozenneo277

    the night mode is using stacking method to increase the exposure. Just like HDR mode, when enable the night mode the camera actually take multi photo(frames) than the backend software using multiple frames of photo stacking to increase the details without over exposure. The exposure time show in the "info" of night mode photo is not the "real" time, is a total photo stacking exposure time. Hope you understand what I explain

    So I just took photos of tonight's blue moon. Anything above 5x zoom has no raw file setting. So I had to settle for jpgs. It takes great photos of the moon nonetheless. Will tell you more once I inspect the jpegs.

    Actually, an aperture of f/1.2 comes only with very expensive lenses. The most expensive one is from Leica, called the Noctilux, e.g., 50mm f/0.95. On the P30, aperture is fixed for each lense: 16mm wide angle with f/2.2, 27mm on primary lens with f/1.6 and 135mm on tele lens with f/3.4. Aperture change then is nothing but a software fake if the respective lens is chosen.
