I did my first laptop motherboard fix thank's to 15 minutes worth of your videos. It's quite simple once you get grasp of what you need to find. I plugged 19V on the power connector and got 19V on the mains so the connector and PSU were fine. Next I measured what voltages I get across the PCB, turns out I get 0,8V here and there, but not 5V on USB so that means that power isn't getting pretty from the mains. So I go and check the first 2 mosfets that 19V goes to and 19V didn't get past the first mosfet. I took it off and used a jumper wire and the whole laptop woke up. It's amazing how simple issue can cause the whole laptop to not function. I'm pretty confident now that I can take on even tougher problems if the situation needs it, hence if the laptop is worth saving. Even on this video I get the idea what you are trying to do and while experience helps, I assumed you would just go trough each component until you hit nothing and start taking suspicious parts out. I don't still have the hot air station required for this job to be easy, but I most certainly are gonna buy one now. Thank's and keep it going!

It would be your first fail if you use jump wire on upper mosfet and in that time charger IC doesn't work properly. In this case all 19V would get through the whole motherboard...

@@london4983 Totally wrong, it seems you do not understand the principals of voltage rails in a notebook. The shorted MOSFET is not an UPPER MOSFET because its not part of a switching buck converter where upper and lower MOSFETS exist.

Very impressive, Sorin! Power supplies are a pain and it is rarely a solid state device that is the initial cause of failure; capacitors are always suspect. I often used that technique of checking the temperature of components. The difference was usually so small that I would check them on my upper lip until the day that a component was so hot that it caused a painful blister that I remember to this day!

I enjoy watching your analysis and patience sharing your methodology with us. it's always replace with most techs. But why the failure in the first place. I can't ever give up attempting to repair rather than replace. work on car computers/controllers. Circuit boards. But only after they've been replaced for upwards of $1,000.00. I repair and then they're passed to the next unsuspecting customer. I've gained plenty of information and techniques from you. i will add the motherboards and configurations of HP laptops are ridiculous. Thank you again.
