Hozelock Auto Reel 30m keeps retracting/ Disassembly - Part 1

Need your help KZreadrs on this one.
This is a Hozelock Auto Reel 30m (Model 2590)... recently the safety brake/locking mechanism which stops the hose from retracting when pulled out has stopped working. So while you are pulling the hose, the Hozelock is engaged in a tug-of-war to return the hose back to its original position.
Rather than bin it, i have disassembled the Hozelock to show you the steps and also would really appreciate anyones help to fix the original problem and also tell me where those bits go and how to repair the braking mechanism.
So if you are a Hozelock engineer or who how to repair these, please help.
Once i know how to fix it, i will complete this video to help others.
If we can fix this issue, Hozelock customers can continue using the product without having to replace it.

Awesome stuff! Ordered the part mentioned below. Took it to bits, cleaned out several million spiders, several nerf bullets, replaced the lever as the old one was in two bits with its floating spring and VOILA!!

Haha, well done, it's probably lighter after clearing out the spider carcasses and nerf bullets

Interesting information. It has allowed me to replace the rubbish hozelock hose that came with min which I bought during 2020. I got fed up of the hose flexing and kinking whilst unwound causing the water flow to stop. I decided to replace the hose with one from Argos which reviewers gave good marks for not kinking. I paid £50 for a 50 metre hose which I cut down to 40 metres to fit in the reel. My first problem was that my screwdrivers were not long enough so I made a trip to Toolstation. Secondly whilst I held there spindle with a 15mm spanner the internal spring still operated when I removed the 2 screws from the tension plate, obviously I hadn't got that quite right! I removed the internal white plastic hose reel to re-attach the large spring in the spindle groove. I found that this detached itself later when I was manually winding on the new hose so to make sure it stayed put I used a plastic cable tie to secure the rim of the reel to the grey casing so that tension was maintained on the spring in the spindle groove. After removing the old hose and attaching the new I could wind the new hose round the drum and screw everything back together. I spent quite a bit of time increasing the tension as others have described and have ended up with a fully functioning auto reel with a genuinely non-kinking hose. I'm not sure how many times this procedure could be tackled as all the screws are self tapping into plastic and, to my mind, wouldn't fare well after a number of removals. Hope this is helpful!

BEFORE removing the two torx security screws holding the main spring shaft put a 15mm ratchet or box spanner on the other end of the shaft and hold the spring tension THEN undo the security screws and slowly release the spring tension about 4-5 turns until loose then remove the shaft and continue to replace the raceway lever. Once replaced, refit the shaft and align the end of the spring in the shaft slot, tension the spring about 4-5 turns before refitting the security screws on the shaft and reassemble the case. Hope that helps.

@@kevin.grahame after a day of wrestling with the thing I finally did it. I have the 40m, grey and yellow thing. My fault was that the belt had come off the hose distributor, but I took it apart before I read your comment and had quite a shock when the spring unwound. Anyway, taking your advice of using a socket wrench on one side, I worked out that I could gradually wind the whole thing back up. Not 4 or 5 times, more like 50. I'd turn it until it was right, screw one screw in to hold it, let it take in enough hose that it was loose, then repeat that process. I did that a few times until the whole 40 meters was done. Now it works better than it did before it developed the belt fault.

Thank you for this tip, it definitely helped me. Even with the comment I was confused at first, but then got it. Basically, you use the bolt to wind up/add tension to the spring coil, then use those two screws to lock in or keep that tension in the coil. Once you screw them back in, even a little bit, you can't turn the bolt. I eventually pulled all the house out; wind the 15mm bolt/ coil up 10 times, then put the screws back in. Then i got it to retract some of the hose. Then repeated this again, held the bolt, removed screws, wound another 10 times, put screws back partly, retractedd more hose etc,. As mine is the 40m, it took about 4 repeats of this.

Hello Savage, I have been looking at the same problem and it appears the the spring is part of a very badly designed ratchet lock which is part of the big rewind spring side o the hose reel. No chance of replacing this from Hozelock.:(

Take off both side panels, unscrew the two standard torx T20 screws to remove the left side hose connection, place a 15mm socket on the right side shaft nut and hold the spring tension then remove the two security torx T15 screws on the left side. Slowly turn the spindle nut to increase the tension as required and then align the shaft screw holes and refit the two security torx screws. Test tension and once OK refit the hose connection and side panels.

Hi Shaun, i know the item (raceway lever) and price, however the problem isn't the item or price, it's where does it fit along with the spring? If someone can tell me where it goes, then i'll look to get it working again. Have you taken your's apart? If so, any chance of taking pics of where this lever and spring is fitted? When i opened mine, the lever and ring had already fallen out.
