How you can break 90 this year / Scratch (Week 65)

The golf season is about to start and it's time for us to develop some goals. Wether you're wanting to break 90 for the first time, or win a golf tournament, this 4 step process I'm implementing from Sports Psychologist, Dr. Mo Pickens, should help with that. Let's hold one another accountable this season and strive for it to be the one yet.

Hey Ernie, just wanted to let you know that video you posted with Zach trying to get you to learn the hands "flipped" high draw/hook changed my freaking life. Like, learning how to miss in each direction was something I never even thought about. I practiced the left and right misses each time I've been to the range after that video dropped, and shot a 46 with the same ball on my first nine holes back on the course. I'm usually sneaking up on 100 on a good day, but with lost balls and penalties it's usually like 110. So of all the youtube stuff out there, your video was the one that had a tremendous impact on my game and now I can consider myself a golfer that should try to break 90 from now on.

Love watching your videos. Zach is a fantastic coach. I'm 62, retired 2 years ago but was OK at golf back then, played 10 rounds a year to keep my eye in. Since retiring I've probably play 270 rounds of golf and this in itself has made me better. I'm off 8.7. My course isn't too long and I hit Driver 230 carry. Normally leaves only 120 yds to the green. If I had the longer approaches you have I'd certainly be scoring much higher as I also struggle to hit GIR. I've worked on my short game and putting recently (winter in the UK) and a few weeks ago shot 69, 1 under par. Anything under 80 feels OK. Trying to hit under 80 was a struggle until I did it the first time and it's amazing how quickly you start doing that most rounds. It is unfortunate that I had to wait until I retired to finally be able to get where I wanted to be with my golf game. I feel I can get down to 6 before old age takes over. Watching you and other channels and just picking out little nuggets of info that would compliment my game has been a massive help. Good Luck in everything you do going forward.

Hi Ernie, Good plan. I've said for many years that it's an easy game if you hit fairways and greens. I think the improvement in your driving will really be paying off this year. I would expect GIR to improve just from that alone. My suggestion: On some of your practice rounds, if you miss a green, drop another ball and try again (if you have the room on the course to practice like that). Keep track the extra shots it took, your misses, and your score from the preferred shot. 9 holes, 9 GIR, Should be under par right?! Also, if you put yourself in trouble off the tee, adjust your possition so you have a reasonable chance to hit the green. I could explain why this works but would spoil the fun. It does work and you'll start getting a feel for what it takes to shoot around par. It also gives you more feed back on your approach shots. Good luck!

Important, it's only the approach shot that you are retrying and if it's on the green it counts. Still need the pressure of not 3 putting, or needing a ten footer for a one under round. No redos on the green. This is all about fixing your approach shots and learning to score.

I keep a one note notebook just for golf. I have a page for each lesson that I do, sometimes I journal my rounds, and this year I have a page that I did last week or 2 weeks ago detailing goals and what I would like to work on, so the timing of this video was great. Doing my second year of lessons this spring/summer. Before I just golfed without keeping score or trying to better myself. Last year I made improvements to my swing and my game, but I know I can do even better this year. Unfortunately my instructor moved, so I have to find a new one. Goals: My first goal is to actually keep track of my scores every round, I only did that once last year. Second is to get in practice 3 times a week and play at least one time per week (also fairly busy). I don't have a set score that I would like to achieve just yet because Im not entirely sure what my average baseline is, though I'd be happy with low 90's or high 80's by the end of the summer. Items that I want to work on this year are smoothening out my swing (is very harsh and torquey), improve dispersion and contact, and putting. Great video Ernie!

Solid routine. I’ve been playing golf for just over a year and have been practicing a lot. My main goal for this year is to break 85 once, and shoot 5 rounds in the 80s. I was able to break 100 last year, and recently have been hovering around 90, occasionally shooting 88 or 89. Unfortunately with my schedule, I’m lucky if I can get in one range session a week(around 100 balls) and playing one round of 9 or 18 holes per weekend. Sometimes over lunch I can chip some balls, but it’s not at a course so I can only work distance control for shorter shots. I think my goal is attainable. Just need to stay focused and make sure my range sessions are productive and not just scrap and hit. Also playing 2-3 balls when I play golf, just to get more reps in on the course.

I really like the structured approach. I’ve been training with structure (both goals and scheduled training plans) for racing bikes for a long time and it’s the only way that I can follow through with what I need to do and ensure I’m actually heading in a positive growth direction. From my experience you have to enjoy the process even if it is type 2 fun. If this becomes too burdensome, then switch it up to do what you’re motivated to do. My coach and I are always checking in to make sure I’m mentally in the right place and look at (tons of) data to evaluate progress and adjust my plan. I haven’t really used that much structure for golf, but I try to be thoughtful about what I’m doing and evaluate within the framework of how much time I devote and care while making sure I’m having fun. And I’d make your goals are progressive/incremental. Aiming for improvement from 7-8 to 12-13 GIR is a big jump - for me, in cycling terms that would be an improvement I would expect to take 3-6 months, so I hope you will be satisfied if you average 10+ in a couple months (just a wild guess on how long it might take) unless Zach suggests you should be at 12-13 soon. Actually I wouldn’t be surprised to see huge gains given the massive improvement in your swing. I can’t wait to see where you go from here, Ernie!

break 80 on two courses away from home course, putts under 32, final group in club championship, get out to more courses I have not visited in a while, short game once per week, putt out and stop just giving myself putts, more walking, and enjoy Scotland buddy trip

Have you thought of doing shorter practice sessions everyday rather than just two blocks in the week? Reason is that if you are working on something e.g. swing change or contact drills you can maybe ingrain the muscle memory quicker by just hitting into the net for 15 mins during a coffee break - it also means that expectations are reduced, so if you have an off session its no big deal.

good luck with your goals and congrats on the upcoming marriage! like you i also have to balance work, make youtube videos, getting better at golf, and i have to plan my wedding reception in june. my goal (rather delusional) was to get to scratch in a year, but i think this year my goal is to break 80. i just hope my swing changes that i have done in the offseason start to pay off this year, i'm looking forward to next coming months!

Good video! I’ve become a big fan of process oriented golf. Have a routine and stick with it. Do t overthink… plan the shot, pick the club and commit. Regardless of the result, if I follow the process I’ve been successful. 👍🏻

@@ErndogGolf my result goal for the year is to gain consistency in my scoring through practice, lessons and more time on the course. Recent focus on my short game has led to some lower scores, so that is encouraging. Good luck with the wedding planning. 👍🏻🥂
