Side kicks are INFURIATING against someone who does them well. They always feel like the wrong thing at the wrong time and screw with my mojo as much as anything. I'm getting into Karate partly because of how often it's you guys who frustrate me! I hope to eventually learn advanced techniques like the "Chubby Surprise"

@@terrencesykes184 We do grappling too, but very occasionally. What I find so interesting is that as MMA has matured, a lot traditional Karate has come back (the stance, side kick, etc). Karate was born out of a proto-MMA world, and those who go back to what it was, find that it is still applicable if you train it. Very interesting.

I'm karate based from back in the day. I was lucky to have been influenced by very good fighters for their time from the west coast, like Joe Lewis. They brought me from poor to mediocre. Perhaps the best thing they taught me was to learn techniques from as many styles and systems as possible to evolve what we do. I've found that karate works fine, but there are other ways that work better, and these can blend with karate quite well.

I always look at traditional arts and the techniques found in them as advanced (however fundamental). For a beginner to survive in a hard sparring situation, it might be best to use side kicks sparingly because if you don't have good setups a muay thai approach to basic sparring might be smarter. Make no mistake, a good karate fighter is a sniper, with an arsenal of strikes! I think lots of schools, got watered down but the techniques are all in the katas self defenses and drills.

Yes and no. A side kick by essence is a thrust kick you do sideways. So yeah... But there are times that a square stance works just fine like if your opponent makes an angle and you're just fast enough to kick but you're footwork isn't good enough to make the turn to follow you're enemy. It depends

I used to think sidekicks didn't work until somebody accidentally threw a little too much power into one during sparring and knocked me right out, ever since then I've been using side kicks to pretty good success. Back leg side kicks don't work though, always front leg.

Yo, legit shit, Wonderboy would actually be bomb at chess. If you think about everything he said about feints and controlling distance and aggression with the lifted foot? That is the pawns and the knights. Position control and aggression. The light moves spiced with hard shots. That is material trades followed by sudden positioning from the Queen. Then the unorthodox combo? That is checkmate. I am terrible at chess and fighting myself, but I see the concepts. Lol.

@@Jaydenwybenga that would be the follow up. Ive been studying traditional karate for over 30 years. My Sensei is a 9th dan. What you are explaining is sport karate. U are trying to score a point, first one there wins. Wont work ina real fight. In a tournament you are essentially just trying to score a goal it doesnt need to be effective to score. Also in a real foght if u get hit once the fight isnt over. Thats part of the problem with the misconception of karate. They see that and go oh that sucks.
