    Thank you for this video. I’ve realized that my soil is waayy too fast-draining. I had killed a jade plant before by overwatering, so I thought that I needed to treat my new jade more like a succulent by using succulent soil. I’m now realizing that it’s surviving but not thriving. It’s going to be repotted ASAP. Thank you!

    Thank you Evelyn. I’m glad to hear that you are not giving up. I also figured out that if the round edge of the leaf is drying up, turning little dark and shiny , it could be from not watering enough as well. One of my Jade wasn’t watered for long time and it was in full sun by the window. One of its leaf was like that. So it’s not always from over water. Some signs that leaves show are kind similar if you over water or under water. That’s why I created this video to look more signs to figure out if it’s completely dry. That way over watering can be prevented. If there is still a dry leaf that means it’s from under watering. I’m happy that you found this video helpful. Stay connected !

    Your welcome! The other one is vermiculite. It holds moisture in the soil. But I’ll only suggest it if your plants are in full sun and you don’t get time to water. I only mix that I have so many other plants and I want them to go without water for long time like I mentioned in the video. Soil and perlite should be good. Please check out my other videos about Jade. They don’t need a lot of fertilizer if you put them in organic soil instead of cactus mix.

    I think it happens from lack of water while they are in direct sunlight. But it could be mildew from over watering if it’s powdery. On my jade plants it happen once last summer with few bottom leaves. I couldn’t water them in time. Just check soil if it’s too dry and too much sun exposure it could happen. We can’t reverse that leaf. But usually cut that part if it’s not spread to the whole leaf.

    Hi Tej. Thanks for the wonderful video and very detailed explanation. However, it seems that it has not covered symptoms my jade plant had before died. I had pot with three plants. One by one plant became sick and died. Symptoms were leaf falling without any color or shape changes. What I have only seen were something like white cobweb on the leave beginning and some small flying flies. I think I have not overwatered it. Do you have a clue what it could be?

  • @PlantingwithTej

    @PlantingwithTej

    8 ай бұрын

    You’re welcome! leaves mostly fall from overwatering or fungus. If they dried up before falling than it’s due to under watering. Webbing could be from mealy bug eggs. Search up mealy bugs but they are white fuzzy insects and you can spot them easily. It could be spider mites as well. If what you saw that was flying was white in colour that could be white flies which are very hard to get rid of even the spider mites. Next time If your jade is dropping leaves first thing to do is check for root rot then look for insects very thoroughly.

  • @PlantingwithTej

    @PlantingwithTej

    3 жыл бұрын

    Jade leaves could fall prematurely from being too wet or too dry, for lack of nitrogen in the soil or for need of more sunlight. Quite often mealybugs attack this succulent. Please check for any insects. Look ok very thoroughly specially on the new growth. Also take it out of the pot and check for root root rot. If root rot is not the case, it could be from under watering. Also give it fresh soil. You you can pot it up in a organic potting soil and add some perlite in the soil for better drainage. You need to figure out the cause by trying different things to be able to find out the root cause. Please feel to comment any further questions. Thank you.

    Hi Tej, just got my jade plant given by my friend. Actually she only pull out from her plant. She gave me with roots so i just planted it in my pot . I placed it in our balcony east facing. From 9 to 12 it get sunlight but after 12 there no more sunlight in our balcony. After a wk i noticed some leaf become soft but still attached on the stem. Yes you are right about under-watering since it only get 3 hours of sunlight. But if leaves are wrinkly it might be thirsty if you soil is about 80% dry you can water it. To find root rot you can press firmly on the stem at the base it should be very firm but if it’s little bit soft then it might be root rot. You can also pull it out and check fir any soft roots that break easily when you pull on them. I use regular potting soil for my jade plants. But I keep them in full sunlight and only water when it’s dry. If that leaf starting dry out, turned black then little shiny. Then it’s from under watering. But make sure to check soil first if it moist or dry and pull the plant out and check roots. You should also inspect the plant very carefully for mealy bugs or any other pests.

    Yes full sunlight means any sunlight coming through windows or the plant being outside that is directly hitting the plant. It could be morning sun, afternoon or evening. 4-6 hours is better but even if it gets few hours of direct light and few hours of indirect light it will be good I have some plants sitting in my north side window sills which get bright indirect light all day. They seems do fine and not getting leggy or anything. But I never close the window shade all year long.

    Yes it is heathy. During summer when they get a lot of sunlight their leaves can turn reddish. If your plant is healthy otherwise and geeking well, there is nothing to be worried about. Make sure it gets the water it needs. When the soil dry out give it a good drink. Make sure to water very thoroughly.

    It’s means the direction your window face. Sun rises from east so east facing windows receive light that’s not too strong. There are so many plants you can put in the morning sun. You can google it or you can tell me what plants you have. West facing window will get the hot afternoon and late afternoon sun. South-facing windows receive the most light and are the hottest. North-facing windows receive the least light and are the weakest and coolest. I have lot of jade plants di out them in all the windows in my house. Jade plant needs few hours of sunlight to get lots of growth and they don’t become leggy. During hot summer days they will do fine in any window which get good light. It I’m also depends if there is a big tree in front of the window then plants won’t get a lot of direct light regardless of the direction. I hope it make sense now.

    I use Dawn dish soap. Any other dish soap would be fine. Just mix few drops of soap in water and shake it until it’s foamy if not then add some more then spray on the leaves where you see mealy bugs. Mealy bugs will turn pink/ red from their white colour. That means they are dead. Then your can remove them with ear buds, tooth pick etc or simply rinse the leaves with plain water. Don’t leave the soapy water on the leaves fir more then 5 ti 10 minutes coz leaves will start observing the soapy water. You need to repeat this step once every week until you stop seeing any signs of mealy bugs. I really wanted to make a video but all the measly bugs were gone. I dint find any after using this method. Make sure to check under the leaves. Some time they can fell on the soil when you are getting rid of them. Make sure to pick them up from the soil too incase that happened. I hope it helps you.

  • @PlantingwithTej

    @PlantingwithTej

    2 жыл бұрын

    It could be anything. If the white spots can be removed by wiping with the wet cloth, then it’s just from using the tap water. It is nothing to worry about. Leaves store salt and deposits from the water then it sweats it out. If not then it could be powdery mildew. It occurs when there is low light, improper circulation, cooler temperatures, and excess humidity. Overhead watering leaves foliage damp, which in winter months tends to stay moist for a long period. This promotes the formation of fungal spores that cause powdery mildew. If you think you might be over watering, it could be the reason. One old leaf turning yellow once in a year or so is normal. But few leaves could be a problem. Yellowing of leaf could happen from few reasons. It could be from improper watering ( only water when it’s dry ) pests or sudden temperature change. Please check for any pests. Thoroughly inspect for spider mites , mealy, bugs, scale etc. Normally Jade plants don’t get pests. But sometimes they can if they are sitting near infested plant or were outside during summer time.

    There are few things you can do. But first check out few of my other jade videos to find out how I’m caring for my jade plants as it seems to be working very well. 1) Make sure to chose the pot according the the size of the roots. Don’t transplant in a very big pot. It will rot all the fine roots. 2) Always bottom water your jade. When roots search for the water towards the bottom, they expand all the way to the bottom. 3) make sure you prune your jade once a year. I sometimes do it every 7-8 months if it’s growing a lot. It makes the main trunk stronger also it focuses more of its energy towards growing roots after pruning. If you still have more questions feel free to reach out to me. Thank you for connecting.

    You can loosen the soil a little bit with wooded skewer if soil is really compacted. When soil is compacted it won’t soak water easily. That’s why it’s important to ad perlite to make it airy. You can soak it until it’s wet at the top or 1-2 inch below the top if you have gnat problem. As long as its roots soak water for the whole plant. But you have to follow other steps as well. Make sure you jade is in full sun at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight and only water after it’s completely dry. Please watch all my other jade videos. No you don’t have to. I only do it because it very easy ti water as I have too many plants. I just ad the water in the decorative pot and place the plant back inside. It soaks the water from the bottom. Also it protects the furniture. You don’t need double pots. Just put a saucer underneath or something to protect surfaces from moisture and to prevent mildew.

    Only add 20 % cocopeat. You don’t need a lot of it. Jade plants don’t need fresh compost. You can use well decomposed compost. Also add 20 % perlite it keeps the soil airy and prevent it from compacting too much. Here in Canada we get a potting soil which usually have mixture of soil , compost , perlite etc. I just use that fir my Jade. I normally add some perlite to it. But you can make your own mixture. You can add 10-20% sand as well. Since the weather is lot different India. I’m assuming that you are India but if not then let me know where you live. Where I live I keep my Jade plants indoor. But can take them out only in summer months. I hope it was helpful.

    Yes it can but it depends how far down the stem it has travelled. You can always remove the soft/ dead roots and cut out the portion of the stem that’s rotten then used a clean knife to cut little further after you stop seeing any dark spots. Then let it callus over and plant it in a fresh dry soil and a new clean pot. I only had that happened once when I was trying to wire a jade to a bonsai pot and end up breaking most of the roots. Later it got root rot. I have shared a pic of it in one of shorts. I’ll link the short here. I don’t think I can attach a picture here. But if you message me on insta ( plantingwithTej) then I can share the pics there. kzread.infoIynx0sC3INc?feature=share

    If the weather is not too different in your house compare to the nursery then you can repot it. It would be better if you wait for at least one week.
