    Thanks for such a great video. You are very courageous to cut the plants and just pop them into soil and they grow happily!!👏 If my plant is about 6" long with no leaves along most of the trunk, can I repot it and push the stem down further down into the soil? Will roots come out from the side of the trunk? Will it be ok and continue to grow as a shorter plant?

  • @PlantingwithTej
    @PlantingwithTejКүн бұрын

    You’re welcome 😊 Yes you can push it further down in the soil, it will grow more roots. But if your plant is so small and has no leaves I wouldn’t risk repotting it as it can die or get a root rot if you accidentally overwater it. If you want to keep it short then you can prune the top every year. Then it will stay short and compacted.

    What does it mean if you prune the top, it callouses over, but over 12 days later nothing has even hinted at growing where you cut...?

    When the cut start drying it will for a brown layer on top of the cut. It’s looks like hard lid. It falls off after sometime or can be removed by hand. Then stem will start sprouting in two places some times three or four stems. I have shown in one of my long form videos in few plants how they grew back after pruning. Make sure it’s getting a lot of sunlight.

    Please don’t schedule watering. Make sure yo check the soil if it’s fully dry or not befits you water it. When leaves are dropping it’s mostly over watering issue unless they get really dry and crispy here falling off then it’s not getting enough water or not getting it on time.

    I wouldn’t suggest using the soil from the back yard. It needs a lighter soil. I use regular potting mix and I add 20-30% perlite in it. Soil needs to dry faster to prevent root rot.

    Your videos are very informative. I have a very old jade plant that was very top heavy so last October I pruned it a bit because I was concerned it would fall over. It did produce new leaves although smaller ones. I guess given that it was not in the growing season, I was ok with that and happy it did not die. I've now repotted it in April and would like to know if I can also prune it more or should I wait because there are alot of bare stems and leggy. I'm very nervous to lose it, but at the same time I'd like to cut back the branches right back so that the new growth is more compact. What are your thoughts? Thank you.

  • @PlantingwithTej
    @PlantingwithTej2 ай бұрын

    Ok there are few very things to keep in mind when comes to jade pruning. 1) You can prune all you want, it doesn’t harm the plant but you need to make sure if it’s in a bigger pot and your watering like you used to all that water has nowhere to go. It’s gonna go into the stem and it’s gonna rot the stem so if there’s less leaves, you need to water it less or keep it in a smaller pot so you don’t run the chance of overwatering. 2) Regarded of the season when you prune jade plants, the newer growth is always smaller, but it does grow overtime and get bigger. The other reason for tiny growth and leggy growth is that the plants not getting direct sunlight for 4 to 6 hours if you want it to be really full and have bigger leaves try to give it as much sunlight as you can if you live in a really hot climate, make sure that you close the curtains during mid afternoon so the leaves doesn’t get burn( turning little pinkish or reddish is normal) and you need to water it more if it’s too hot and the soil is drying very quickly. 3) Never do too many changes at once. For example, if you prune the print, don’t report it at the same time if you re-bought the plan do not prune it at the same time just do one thing at a time and these can be pruned all around and they do grow back but during spring and summer, they grow a lot faster, but there’s no hard. I prune mine all year never had any problems. I hope it was helpful. If you have any other questions you can comment. I’ll try to get back to you. Thank you!

    @@PlantingwithTej thanks for your reply. Now that it has less leaves, I will be watering it less often. It looks pretty bare. However, I understand not to do many things all at once, but because of mealybugs, I had no choice but to prune it back hard now in its growing season and hope it will re grow leaves. Thanks again.

    I started my two now massive jades from a two inch cutting over 15 years ago. They're "leggy" and stretch out in all different directions. They are healthy. Thank you for showing an example of that look in this video. Numerous other jade videos denounce it, as if there's only one right way.

    Thank you for your comment and appreciation for my efforts. Jade plans are very forgiving when it comes to pruning reporting other things as long as you prevent the overwatering which can cause root rot and fungus issues. That’s the only tricky thing with jade plants. I have few other videos on full care , pruning, propagating , watering techniques etc. I hope you watch them. I’m sure you would find them helpful.

  • @PlantingwithTej
    @PlantingwithTej2 ай бұрын

    I’m so sorry l, I missed your comment and couldn’t reply with timely manner. When did plants start dropping their leaves, It’s most likely overwatering issue unless leaves are really dried up that means it didn’t get enough water or the soil is too compacted and Plant didn’t get a chance to absorb the water. I hope you were still able to save some of it. Maybe just the leaves to propagate you can get a small plant. Give it a lot of sunlight, all the videos on my channel to prevent riding it should grow quite well for you. Make sure to keep them smaller if you have a habit of overwatering and slowly move up the pot size over the years as Plant gets big. Please don’t give up on this plant. Just get another small and try it one more time. Trust me they’re pretty easy to care for.

    Hi, I have never planted them outside here as after summer it gets too cold here. I know they have tuberous roots and can be damaged easily. Try to dig around it few inches away from the main stem so that you don’t damage the roots and dig straight instead of an angle. This should help avoid hitting the roots.

  • @PlantingwithTej

    It’s okay for some of the bottom and very old leaves to drop as the plan grows and get bigger. But if it’s frequently dropping leaves that means it being overwatered. If leaves are dry and crunchy that means plant not getting enough water. Over watered leaves will be start yellowing and little but they will be full of water just so you can tell the difference .
