I‘ve got Jade plants, that are actually from my grandmother. They went to my mother decades ago and later to me. They must be at least 50 years old and they get nice blossoms from time to time. These plants can get really old. 😃

I have a 10-year-old jade plant whose thickest trunk is about half an inch, likely due to lack of water and lack of fertilizer over the years. I've been improving my care over the years (and started on antidepressants) and it's doing a lot better now that it's getting regular water, fertilizer, and a big bright sun lamp over it. I've been planting all of the cuttings I've made from it and have about a dozen happy little jade plants now! :) Hoping to one day have one of those big luscious jades with the huge leaves, but that'll just take patience. My crassulas have been the sturdiest plants I've owned, they can sure take a beating and the worst thing that happens is they turn lovely colours!

Thank you so much for this!! I have been wondering about the odd things (like this!) going on with my plants. Side note: I cut up 10L water tanks to use as basins under pots, especially outside. I live in a coastal town in Western Australia. Currently very hot summer. So, a couple of days ago I picked up one of these tank basins I had kinda left to the side after potting up the plants that had been in it. I wanted to reuse it for new additions. As I picked it up, I noticed the bottom glistening with crystals in the sun. My instant thought was, salt. We are close to the beach in a notoriously windy town. Salt in the air settling over everything, eating everything away. Including my plants. I hadn't given too much thought to the tap water, even though we don't drink it as it is technically toxic (fails water safety tests!!), guessed it would be okish. But now my plants are suffering and even dying. I will be changing my ways immediately. Once again, thank you.

I was shopping one day at a local grocery store and discovered a lovely dual Jade plant in the corner near the front doors; I bought them and gave each plant their own pot. I noticed one leaf on each plant developed a brown spot after transplant, I think it was just shock due to their new home. I've also ensured they get enough sunlight and water. I bought then during the winter a few months ago and I wonder if I over water a little bit during the transplant to ensure they took root well. They're otherwise doing famously :) the spots have not grown though each plant has surely gotten comfortable. I've got them in succulent soil and face-first in an east facing window, so they get all the afternoon and evening sun. I can't wait to see them grow larger and thrive, I've love the bring them downstairs into the common areas or even outside once they're full grown adults! Edit: I also bought a pregnant Aloe plant and she's literally shot out like 4 pups since I've bought her, she's phenomenal I have so many aloe now lol

Great video as usual, but I would like to add that most of these arid succulents like crassula really don't mind low temperatures as in their native habitats nights can get very cold. They just can't take freezing, especially their roots and will die instantly if this occurs. One exception I have found is the flapjack/paddle plant which seems to really hate any cold. I've lost a couple by leaving outside one day too many in the autumn.

I've never seen this on my crassulas - I have a load of them in my garden of all sorts. I'm in south africa, so you basically just grab a leaf from someone else's and prop them. super common plant all over cape town. Maybe the rain ensures that this doesnt appear on the leaves. I myself give away probably 30 a year since they just prop so fast! Big plants often just end up with loads of little ones underneath from dropped leaves and stuff.

I had replanted my 2 ‘mother’ Jades in larger pots. They looked dreadful. After watching How To Prune Jade Plants I set upon the 2. We began by ‘having a word’ then I began pruning as you directed. They were way too top heavy so I cut where I wanted 2 shoots to come out. This morning they’re a bit surprised at yesterday’s haircut but as I told them, ‘you’ll be ok’. Meanwhile I have many new plants started. Thank you for teaching us how to, with easy to understand instructions and excellent accompanying video. You don’t waste time with superfluous chatter, but get right to the point. I have a 25 year old Jade out on my West facing deck. It started as a cutting and is now about 4' tall. I water it 2x in summer, otherwise leave it alone. We have a Mediterranean climate & get lots of rain in Winter which seems enough for it, plus it blooms beautiful clusters of pink flowers every Fall. I've had to cut it back a couple times over the years and have always propagated the cuttings. My outdoor plant never gets bugs but my indoor Jades attract mealy bugs too easily regardless of light, water or placement so I now put the new cuttings in pots outdoors where they thrive.

maybe in the british isles you need to give it a lot of sunlight, but in my area, jade does not like being in direct sun. it likes a lot, but direct beats it up. i take it out in the summer but keep in shade (as i do with all house plants). ive had mine for over 45 yrs. it also flowers in the fall with clusters of white, fragrant flowers that turn pink, like an oak leaf hydrangea flower. thank you for all of your good advice.

@@SheffieldMadePlants im in Pennsylvania amish country, US. no, im not amish. my main jade which procreates in every plant it gets near, has become a bonsai b/c i kept it in the same snug pot all these years, with stems measuring 9.5 inches in diameter. occasionally, i refresh the topsoil. i think it flowers b/c i take it outside as soon as possible (may, after danger of frost) and i leave it out until almost the end of october, which is really pushing it. this past winter, i had it in a window with direct sun and it got really stressed. it still flowered, but lost a lot of leaves.

One thing people forget is that cacti and succulents need much less fertiliser than normal plants, especially nitrogen. Like a 3-6-6 or a 3-3-6 fertiliser is best, probably. If you put, for example, standard manure-based fertiliser on it at normal doses, very soon it will start to yellow, get mushy or even rot. You may think it's overwatering, cut on water, but that may add even more stress. A jade will generally recover if it's not too late, but a cactus is more likely to eventually die or become permanently unattractive. 😢

Thank you for the advice on Jades! I was gifted one last fall and I had no idea how to care for it. I'm doing something right because my leaves are firm and it looks very healthy. I do want to ask you if you have any idea how to care for Monkey Puzzle trees? I was gifted one a few weeks ago. These are trees and do get rather large but I was told I would be able to keep it in a pot for a few years before having to plant it. I can't find much information on how to care for one indoors. Would you please post a video on that? Thanks again!

I got a Crassula Ovata that I propagated from cutting 30 years ago when studying horticulture (an easy assignment). I have developed it in the omono bonsai style, and is currently about 4ft tall, including the pot. Unfortunately, the root system is underdeveloped (and no, I have not done any of the root pruning common with bonsai) leaving the tree top heavy. at the end of each winter I repot it upright. but by the start of autumn it's always leaning around 45deg. Last repotting I also pruned back to primary branching, still leaning. Is there any way to encourage more root growth so the tree can support it's own weight?

There are so many factors to consider when watering your jade plant, or any other plant for that matter. The size of the pot, what the pot is made of (clay vs. plastic), the type of soil, indoor vs outdoor location, humidity, temperature, time of year. I am sure there are other factors to consider. In summer, I water my jade plant in a clay pot twice a week (zone 9b outdoor), and sometime even that is not enough. It's important not to overwater, but it's also important not to let it dry out too much.

I bought a small jade plant. Every time I watered it... lost a leaf. It didn't grow for a full year!! It lost a lot of it's roots. I replanted it and another 6 months later and I finally saw new growth! It took 2 years to take it from 4 leaves... watering only a spash every few weeks, to 2 main stems, each with 3 sets of leaves. Idk what Im doing wrong, but it is creeper slow. Otherwise it is a deep green, smooth but not squishy. I moved it closer to the light and put it in a smaller container before it did anything.

Hello, I would really use some help with my jade plant, hope you can help please 🙏🏼. I bought a 7 yr old, huge huge huge jade plant a few years ago, everything was fine until we moved to a new flat. The leaves were getting smaller and smaller, thin, wrinkly and a lot of the bottom leaves even get totally dry and fall off. I understood it needs watering and so I was watering more often. However, it didn’t help, and even one day 3 big branches fell off the tree. The leaves are still the same - small, thin, wrinkly and a lot of them still dry off, but not yellow! I’m afraid to overwater it since it’s a huge tree and a pot that does not have drainage holes o I water a little every week. I don’t know what to do. Hope I can get your help! Thank you!🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
