When I first played this game at launch I was blown away by how amazing it was and how it really immersed you in the world of spiderman. Five years later I can still say its one of the greatest games I've ever played and I find myself replaying it at least once a year. Looking forward to the sequel!!

I just finished my only replay since 2018 yesterday on PS5! I agree with a lot of what you said here. I just couldn't believe how many sections of the game weren't the actual Spider-Man levels despite how fantastic it still was. It's also a much shorter game than I remember, with Doc Ock being introduced as a villain much later than anticipated. At the very least, the most memorable part of the game for me was the excellent finale, and it was everything I remembered. It's still Insomniac and the PS4 gen's crown gem.

the game is so good that it feels shorter while playing it but when we remember it, it feels bigger i don't know how to explain. The sequel really deserved a 30h campaign, too bad it will be only 17

Honestly the story, the characters, and the writing in general in this game is so stellar that I feel like every video game should be looking to it as a model for storytelling into the future. It's that good.

5:02 - that is a reason why his new face looks so horribly wrong. He went through a lot during his 8 years as Spider-Man - his personal life is a mess, he doesn't have enough sleep, he gets beaten to a bloody pulp regularly. He just can't look like a schoolboy after that, even with all his powers. And his old face showed his everyday struggle really well. Also, his old face was much more expressive. That's why the final scenes in the game were so memorable.

Can’t believe it’s been five years since this game released. I played it for the first time last year and thought it was for the most part a great game

The MJ and Miles levels were okay the first time, when you didn’t know what was safe, what the enemy view cones were like, there were still surprises and you actually had to put effort into thinking out your route. But on even the first replay, you realize how very easy the sections are and how on rails it is. Then it’s too easy to manipulate and it’s a bore. The first time it’s fun! Never again though lol Other than that, I think the whole game aged really well. I just finished my 4th or 5th play through of the main story a couple days ago But I still really resent the face change. He looks too young and fresh! Hasn’t he been Spidey for like 8 years at the start of the game? Sure, maybe the average 24 year might or might not look a little younger than the original model, but it makes sense that he wouldn’t; he gets hit all the time, constantly stressed, skincare it probably shit since he’s in a mask 8hrs+/- a day, etc. Why should he look like he can’t drink legally yet?

I replayed this game during Covid in the run up to the PS5's, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales' launch. Personally I really felt that gameplay wise is absolutely has aged well. Storywise... it hits different after Covid and the riots that all happened that year, game hits much closer to home after those, especially towards the end.

As far as the first game goes from the PS4 version, the game STILL holds up after Spider-Man 2 came out. It STILL looks good, I didn’t realize how much of an improvement Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was until I watched this video. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is TRULY a next-gen game for the PlayStation 5!

@@dolurosu100% It’s an amazing game but it’s it has its weaknesses lmao. For example: the general NPC AI and The City’s Interactivity. The “people of the city” are extremely basic and their models are very repetitive. The feeling of NY being a melting pot if different people, cultures and languages isn’t there at all. Even something as simple as hearing people speak a different language or have a different accent as you swing by would have helped. You can barely interact with the people aside from a basic Triangle input to hi five them or something, you rarely ever save any civilians outside of scripted missions and little random acts of heroism like the little girl loosing her ballon in Spider-Man 2 aren’t present at all. The city itself kind of feels dead. There’s also a problem with the open World mechanic. Unlike Batman Arkham Knight and games like it, you can pretty much never enter buildings on your own. The locations we visit during the main story are just one off locations. You can never go back to them. The map in general is closed off until the story needs it, which is disappointing. insomniacs Spider-Man 2 is a PS5 Exclusive. A Next-Gen game. If it misses out on these details it would be very disappointing.

"Marvel's Spider-Man" is easily the best Spider-Man game I've played. Admittedly the only good aspect of the previous games was the web-swinging, but that's not to damn it with faint praise. The web-swinging is really well done. I like how naturally it lets me keep momentum going. I did feel it was slightly floaty, and the complete lack of fall damage took some of the thrill out of it. I hope these aspects are improved a bit in the sequel, but regardless it's a solid traversal system. The game is very derivative. The influence of the Arkham games is clear in the combat, traversal, and taking place in an original universe. Even some scenarios are borrowed, with the Scorpion section being reminiscent of Batman's Scarecrow encounters. The game handles these elements very well though, and is arguably better than most of the games it borrows from. The MJ and Miles sections were low points in the game. But that isn't because the change of pace was bad, so much as the instant-failure stealth was annoying and unsatisfying. I wouldn't mind having MJ involved again if they can figure out these problems. Cluttering the map with a bunch of icons and "content" is also a feature I'm not a big fan of. It didn't bother me during the main quest because the web-swinging was so engaging I enjoyed any excuse to go around the city. When I went back to play the DLC missions though, the luster had worn off. It felt like the game had very few gameplay scenario ideas, and they had overstayed their welcome. All that being said, I really enjoyed "Marvel's Spider-Man" and hope the series continues strong.

Well I have some good news. They improved the swinging system by adding a bunch of new mechanics, features and crisp animations. And now Fall damage is an option you can turn on or off in the sequel game. Don’t know if they improved on the swinging feeling floaty at times tho.

The arkham games still hold up to this day, so I would have been shocked if this didn't hold up at least equally well

Wow, it's been 5yrs since Insomniacs Spider-Man game came out back in 2018. Playing this on the PS4, really brought so much love and joy into playing this game. Playing this really brought my Spider-Man 2 memories back. Now that the sequel will arrive soon enough. It's gonna be one "Spectacular" day.

I was so envious of this game when it first came out. But im so glad i got to play it eventually on PC.

The only thing that didn't age well are the side missions, chore inducing collectibles for unlocking suits, and the tiring challenges scattered around. The crime will get annoying too, you do a simple robbery, more backup criminal comes, you save a civilian from a car compartment, more backup criminal comes, you save a kidnapped civilian laughably surrounded by dozens of goons. Like seriously we just want simple crimes that can be stopped in 1 minute for fuck sake.

The biggest issue I had on my second playthrough of this game was the stealth; very few of the gadgets actually have use in stealth encounters, and I didn't feel like I had nearly as much freedom to experiment as with combat. Just a minor gripe, since it's still very visually satisfying, and most stealth sections end with combat anyways. This is still one of the best games of all time imo.

The game also opens with one of the greatest songs of all time

While I do get the hate behind the MJ missions, I think people give them way too much flack. I personally found it a nice break from Spider-Manning and gave the feel of real danger when you’re just a civilian. It created a great atmosphere and just shows how powerful Spider-Man is.

It literally boils down to them going" Hey, we know you like playing as Spider-Man in the Spider-Man game you purchased but choke on a fat one because you can play as useless regular people instead."

I would say that the Miles Morales game is better than this one. Marvel's Spider-Man has an Arkham City problem in that there's almost too much to do because a lot of it is filler content. Also many times you'd be close to a mission waypoint and just like in Arkham City you'd be drawn far away again by a crime happening, now of course you could ignore them but then you'd lose the feeling that you were the hero you were playing as. I swear the crime alerts are triggered by proximity to a mission. I love Marvel's Spider-Man and Arkham City but in both I found the side stuff becoming a chore rather than a fun diversion. Miles Morales though cut a lot of the filler away and it's the better game for that. There's still filler there but it no longer feels like it's getting in the way of story as it did so often in the main game.

I think the Miles gameplay segments are SIGNIFICANTLY better than the MJ segments, purely because Miles doesn't go looking for trouble. Every time MJ gets into trouble, it's because she snuck into some place that she knew she wasn't supposed to be and that it would be dangerous. She hid this from Peter because... she hates precaution I guess. You only ever play as Miles because he stumbles into dangerous situations and has to do something to get through. The only Miles Segment that starts with Miles doing something stupid is the one time he has to get past Sable agents, but It's still not as bad as MJ since he didn't know anything like this would happen, and he was just trying to get to F.E.A.S.T.

Holy shit Spider-Man 3(2007) was empty in the city. I didn’t remember it being THAT empty but damn. Shit has come a long way.

"PS2/Xbox Spider-Man 2 + Arkham" is such a great concept and an obvious hit, and I'm glad they made the choice to do an original story instead of rush it to tie in with Marvel Cinematic Product #18B-Z4

Original release 5 years ago, remaster 3 years ago, PC release 1 year ago. And I finished it for the first time some 3 months ago, lol.

Bringing up the Arkham Games again... Angry Joe himself stated that Marvel Spider-Man was more like Spider-Man 2 The Game (2004)... but further and improved on having the Spider Sense Dodge System in groups of enemies. I like the Arkham Games as much as the next guy, but you don't see Batman uppercutting an enemy up in the air follow by doing Combo moves while beating a thug in mid air.

Im playing it again for the third time right now

Somehow I avoided spoilers for the first game until Black Friday and Miles Morales until Christmas😭 But I didn't follow them closely

With how often you mention the similarities, can we take it an Arkham retrospective may be on the horizon?

After playing this game for well over 100hrs. 100%ing new game plus on every save slot and so on- I have only ONE issue with the game and it's story. It's the section directly after Jeff's funeral where MJ is helping us track down Li. Yuri has, at this point, been told by Peter that Li is the one who blew up city hall. MJ tells Peter that she looked at Li's business holdings, and Peter goes to check it out. HE LITERALLY FINDS DEMONS AND STOLEN FISK EXPLOSIVES AND OSCORP RALLY INFO ONNSITE. Pete calls it in to Yuri while he goes to check out more locations ALSO. OWNED. BY LI. Yuri soon calls Peter, telling him all the evidence "tracks back to the Demons but NOTHING that leads back to Martin Li." EXCUSE ME?!?!?! A RELATIVELY NEW REPORTER WAS ABLE TO MATCH THIS PROPERTY AND LITERALLY EVERY OTHER PROPERTY TO LI AND YURI, A SEASONED POLICE OFFICER AND CAPTAIN, COULD NOT?! Given that this issue is immediately resolved when we find evidence AT FEAST but it still bothers me so much.

@@Zippy_Zolton That was the official explanation, but its also probably partly down to wanting this version of Peter to now look slightly closer to Tom Hollands version versus Andrew Garfield's (but still legally distinct from either). Be that Insomniac's preference or a mandate from Sony.

I just realised that Spider-Man should not be able to crawl on most inside roofs because the plaster would probably break with a grown man hanging from it with just his fingertips and toes as contact points

I imagined a realistically animated spiderman game like this one when I was younger and it came true🔥🔥🔥 nostalgic now pt 2 next week 🔥🔥💪🏾😄

This game and the spin off are already big games that had a lot of ambition but damn Spiderman 2 looks like it will be absolutely amazing as hell! I have no doubt that Spiderman 2 will correct some of the flaws from the first 2 games and set the bar so high that absolutely nobody will be able to imagine Insomniac being able to top this anticipated sequel!

I'm finishing up all trophies for Spider-Man PS4 and Spider-Man: Miles Morales before the 20th. Might also get the benchmarks as well but I'm not sure cause there's a lot

I actually just played this for the first time a couple weeks ago! I think the game does suffer a tiny bit from the repetitive nature of most AAA open world games, where you end up doing some of the same objectives several times, and I didn't love the slower paced missions or mini games, but honestly apart from those gripes I feel like the game has aged very well. Visuals still look great, combat is super engaging, and web swinging feels great, especially when you start to master it in some of the trickier side missions. Here's hoping the sequel finds ways to improve the formula!

Eventually you realize every game is repetitive with its own gameplay loop. Some are better at hiding it or making it so fun you barley recognize it. It Takes Two is one of the few games I can think of that does it a bit differently but even in that game the loop is experimenting with new mechanics and mini games

Aged? Ffs this is still the most advanced-feeling game (in graphics, gameplay, and overall) I’ve played in my life, by far.

A cool tidbit about the combat system is that it actually has more in common with Spider-Man 2 than Arkham, because it's not a hit-counter (one button dedicated for hitting, another for countering) system, but a hit-dodge system (one button dedicated to hitting, another for dodging, and it's the exact same buttons as Spider-Man 2 on the PS2). I know it seems like only a little difference, but it does make the combat feel significantly different from Arkham's. Arkham borrowed from Spider-Man 2, and PS4 borrows from both.

One of my favorite games ever and crazy five years have passed. I enjoyed it because it was young millennial spider man: the game, at about the same age I was at the time. I hate what they did to the character model though and may be a reason I don’t buy the new one. One before looked like an adult in his 20s, this one looks like a teenager, and loses the gravitas

Story was great. Mainly because it was original, wasn't tied to movies or specific comics. But gameplay... It was really good, the action surpassing spiderman for psx, but reminded me a lot to Arkham, and the multiple icons on a map to take out. Still, one of the best spider man games out there

My thoughts on the game till the release of Spider-Man 2??? -it's not a PERFECT game, but it was insomniac's perfect FOUNDATION! And it'll pay off on the 20th of October.

Despite some good missions, the game’s story felt like one of those modern police or CW shows (some grand scale thing happens and melodrama ensues with the good guys winning)

Its a solid 7/10. The third act was amazing but i think people forgot how bad the side content was with a bloated currency/token system

It could be a little more challenging in terms of the hand to hand combat for the hardest difficulties that’s all I’d say. I hope the sequal ups the variety of ground attacks that limit me from escaping the area so easily when you’re virtually surrounded by the enemy

Yeah this was very noticeable on a replay. Even the boss fights only took one or two tries and I'm not exactly a hardcore dark-souls-or-nothing pro gamer. The DLC is significantly harder than the main game though? So I assume they learned something and you'd expect them to carry the newer philosophy through to the sequel.

@@alexadshead2093 yes good point I didn’t replay the DLC but I do remember the Hammerhead one in particular being tough especially the boss battle which I did indeed die more than a few times to your point.

​@alexadshead2093 I think it's just an easier game- I've been on a Spider-Man binge for the past couple months in preparation for Spider-Man 2, and once you understand the flow of the combat and know your gadgets well its a cakewalk. I started on Amazing and moved to Ultimate for NG+ and some fights were even quicker: Vulture and Rhino was beaten near-immediately. The only fight that gave me trouble was Doc Ock, near the beginning. The parry system and all that should make the combat harder for Spider-Man 2, but I'm not going to expect to struggle too much in thebconbat.

@@alexadshead2093dude the DLC on Ultimate is absolutely punishing so I have faith that it’ll carry over the difficulty for the sequel.

Its the one modern game where they replaced the main character with a nоn-wнite one, that was actually calling back to the original nоn-wнite character and not just a divеrsity pick
