10:58 instead of promoting, black can be tricky and play Kh1. Taking the pawn would be stalemate! But there is Rh8#. In some endgames this stalemate is the reason why it's a draw. (when Rh8# isn't possible because it is on f2 and the white king on g3 for example)

You might need a bigger vase with more pawns. Being such a low number and being within some obvious boundaries made it too easy. I think it was obviously more than 40 and below 150. I think I guessed 75. But with only 110 rational options you would expect around one out of every one hundred to get it right, more if it was predicted by a bell curve.

Also, just to mention that in the last position, you can also win by playing Kf7 (1. Kf7 g4 2. Rg8 Kf4 3. Kg6 g3 4. Kh5 Kf3 5. Kh4 g2 6. Kh3 Kf2 7. Rxg2+) or Rg8 (and it's the same idea, but you play Rg8 then Kf7). So there were several ways to win, but once you choose one, the rest of the moves is always forced (if black plays the "best" moves)

You didn't go into why Rd5+ was a drawn position, but what I saw was a forcing line where if the king leaves the f file then I win the pawn, and if black tries to promote to a queen then it's mate. Stockfish told me there are 2 problems with it though. The king can run to the corner when it gets to rank 1 and it's stalemate when I win the pawn (nice tactic for the b and g rank pawns). And they can also promote to a knight.

Rd5+ should have been analyzed more! you can get always opposition backwards with white king, but there is unexpected underpromotion on G8 to knight! Or stalemate, check it out with engine, quite cool.

By under-promoting to a knight it creates a root-knight endgame. It's still a win for the rook side.

At 7:06 I would not attack the pawn with the rook after that - because the rook separates the king and the pawn with the g file. I'd just keep it there and bring my king closer. If he moves his King too close to the rook, just attack the pawn. If he moves his pawn too far down, just attack the pawn and the king can't save it. For him to move both pieces down would take him a long time.

Stockfish 15 randomly likes many of the moves, including Kf7 which is mate in 23.

In position 1 it's possible to move black king near the pawn without moving it. Seems like this case in not covered.

Please tell me if i missed something. In Position 3 the Rook starts at D8. ( At the 11:45 mark) you talk about the wrong move. If the Rook starts at D8 then moves to D6.... Doesn't black have to move? i saw you move the rook... however i did not see you move any black pieces. I see you move the Rook from D8 to D6 then not move black then move Rook to F6.... What did i miss? Thanks

That doesn't always work because there could be stalemate traps.

​@@commanderweeb9949 I'm going to assume you meant Kf5 because Kg5 is illegal. After Kf5, I was thinking that white plays Kf7, but I'm having trouble visualizing/analyzing the line beyond that. Another option that I've analyzed (mostly) after Rg6 is Kf4 then Kf6. At this point, as far as I could tell, it is a draw, but *if and only if* black pushes the pawn instead of making another king move.

Can't black just move the King left and right or pushes the pawn 1 or 2 times and then only move his King and get a draw?

which position? because wasting time means that white has the time to set things up so black has to move the way white wants (otherwise black loses) for the first position if black waste time then the white king has time to go in the pawn lane and prevent promotion forever the other two are already race against the clock

Because Nelson already said earlier in the video that cutting off the king only works if the king is on the back three ranks. And if you look carefully, the king is not on the back three ranks.

It's Rd5? because it really doesn't. It improves the black king while doesn't improve the rook. What it does, though, is that it makes space for the white king to advance, but it's not quite enough. You could actually try to keep making more space for the white king in a similar fashion and hope that you can mate when black eventually queens. It's a nice plan except that maybe the black doesn't queen... In fact, they have two options. They could get a knight instead of a queen and enter a drawn RvN endgame. Or they might put their king in the corner with a smart stalemate defence. A concrete line can be 1.Rd5+ Kf4 2.Kf6 g4 3.Rd4+ Kf3 4.Kf5 g3 5.Rd3+ Kf2 6.Kf4 g2 7.Rd2+ and now black can choose between 7...Kf1 and 7...Kg1!. If 7...Kf1 then white plays 8.Kf3 forcing black to play 8...g1=N!. That's a draw if black plays correctly. More recommended is 7...Kg1!. Now no matter whether white plays 8.Kf3 or 8.Kg3 black plays 8...Kh1! and gets the draw immediately. The pawn queens next move unless white captures it 9.Rxg2 with a stalemate.

@@byronwatkins2565 Then 3...Ke3 and there is no chance your king is going to catch the pawn in time. Say 4.Rg5 Kf3 5.Kf5 g3. White might as well sac the rook now to end the game sooner. Don't play random checks in rook endgames! Most often they just help your opponent.
