How Walmart Is Betting Big On Stores To Catch Amazon In E-commerce

Walmart employs more people than any other company in the world and is the country’s largest grocer. But when it comes to e-commerce, Amazon is the clear leader, with 39.5% of the market share compared to Walmart’s 7%. Now Walmart has ambitious new plans, and new leadership, to try and catch up. CNBC got an exclusive interview with Walmart’s new e-commerce chief Tom Ward to hear how it plans to leverage its 4,700+ U.S. stores to entice sellers to Walmart and speed up local delivery. Because 90% of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart, using stores as micro-fulfillment centers is helping Walmart expand programs like drone delivery and InHome delivery straight into customer refrigerators.

Plus the delivery process can be confusing. One order we recently placed was broken in to four shipments to Washington state.. One from Indiana, two separate ones from Nevada, and the balance was delivered by some person in their own vehicle - they left a bunch of items in bags on the porch. Everything arrived OK. It just seemed inefficient. A tough way to turn a profit.

I rediscovered Walmart (and other stores) during the height of the pandemic when Amazon couldn't reliably keep essentials in stock. Also Amazon isn't necessarily the cheapest anymore, *especially* for groceries and household items. And they're not always the fastest either. I don't have a membership with Walmart but sometimes my orders come next day.

For those who don’t know, Walmart has a third party delivery service. Only grocery pickup makes up the largest part of any Walmart’s revenue. If you work at Walmart you’ll notice “OGP” is the best funded, and most prioritized department in the store. That’s because Walmarts business model is built around that specific department. When I left Walmart as a marketing manager (July 2022) they were testing and implementing its own delivery service similar to Walmart. Expect to see Walmart delivery associates in the next year or two.

It's very true. Now that Walmart has Walmart+, I have been spending more at Walmart because it's cheaper, quicker, and easier. To be fair, I have always grocery shopped at Walmart, but the pandemic put a hamper on that. The fact that I can get stuff faster than Amazon without the price increase AND get groceries at the best price (Let's be real, Walmart is still top dog when it comes to affordable groceries, and we all know things on Amazon are 3x-4x+ times more expensive than items at Walmart and Target.). I get groceries once a week now and I don't have to go to the store. I've ordered things to be shipped from Walmart and got them within hours. One thing I dislike is they put a cap on the tip amount. Those of us that are not physically able to do shopping are super appreciative of our shopper and delivery person.

Is it Walmart that puts the cap on the tip? I do door dash and we use to get really low tips delivering for Walmart. It has changed because none of us were taking their orders. It's costing way to much with gas and inflation to deliver, they should never cap tips on drivers. You are such a great person wanting to help your drivers. You will always be Blessed for giving like that. 🙏

  • @chanelf.4934

@@angelsmith888 Hey, it's 100% Walmart app putting a cap on the tips. The max is $100, it shows it in red "Tip amount cannot exceed $100.00" and being that I am a generous tipper and that bothers me. I complained to them once about it when they asked how my online shopping experience was. For some, tipping $100+ is insane but not to me. Like you said, inflation and gas are expensive. You also must be careful when ordering because it auto selects the lowest amount for tip which will be like $10 on some orders but it's almost not designed for you to even SEE it. You can go back to adjust the tip but at that point you didn't even realize it tipped that low. Thank you, I appreciate the delivery people and what they do. It's not easy work and I am forever grateful that I am able to be able to help others that are helping me.

Don’t worry-Amazon continues to expand its third party counterfeit market that’s created a monster with their own inventory system. Too often the “Sold by Amazon” product you selected is actually counterfeit inventory procured by a foreign third party seller that Amazon commingled into their own Amazon product inventory. Eventually consumers will become aware of this problem that’s overrun Amazon in recent years. Given how slow the consumer is to realize and react to anything, Amazon will likely continue e-commerce dominance for a few more years. Amazon’s rating system was truly the gold standard and the entire reason to use Amazon to begin with. Now the review system is overrun with fraud that it can’t be relied on. It’s a shame. I don’t think most people even realize any of this, which is why the sheep are so easy to fool by politicians. It’s amazing how tens of millions of these people hold job titles where they need to make good decisions, because it’s apparent they don’t when it comes to their own money. That should be a job interview question-do you shop at Amazon, and if so, how often? If it’s more than on rare occasion, that tells me that candidate isn’t ready for anything above Neanderthal work because they clearly can’t notice fraudulent product reviews and can’t notice the products they are receiving are too often clearly counterfeit.

Walmart has 2 major issues. 1. Their logistics accuracy is very poor, where they sub stuff that makes no sense, you can do no sub but if they have the same product with a different Sku it will be marked Out of Stock. They also have an issue with subbing items that were marked out of stock as the "in stock" item was actually the out of stock one. 2. Most of the 3rd party sellers are either way over charging for their products, or they have poor accuracy and you end up having to run in circles to get the issue fixed.

I spent 3 hours the other night driving 40 miles to deliver to 12 customers and after gas not including wear and tear on my car and not including taxes after gas I made about 4 or 5 dollars an hour Walmart is exploiting their independent contractor delivery drivers ...it is a monopoly as Walmart now only uses SPARK a delivery app that is owned by Walmart If we do not wish to accept a delivery that we are assigned because we know we will lose money Walmart penalizes the driver They are rich because we are getting poorer

Walmart will never catch Amazon for one main reason... Their online website is horrible... Compared to shopping online with Amazon, Walmart would have to completely overhaul and redesign the website. Walmart can build all the fulfillment centers, hire more employees but until they get the website fixed they'll never catch Amazon.

Walmart is crushing Amazon delivery times and their prices are often cheaper too. I have spent more than enough to buy a home on Amazon in the last 20 years. Delivery times in that time frame has slipped from 2 to 3 days to a week now on basically everything I buy. My Amazon spending is down over 80% in the last couple months and Walmart is now getting more than Amazon as they deliver in a day or 2. Some things I don't need super quick but why wait a week for something if I can find it at walmart and get it the next day delivered. Bezos left Amazon and its starting to show that the new leadership is cutting costs. I will not dump my Prime membership anytime soon as I enjoy a lot of the other benefits but I have Walmart+ now and can see a migration path away from Amazon if they can't get their self together.

Also both have sent me WRONG or damaged items - and...to their credit, they tell me to keep the wrong item or donate it and they reship the item I was supposed to have received without charging me again. My last Walmart order was missing $20 worth of items with no explanation. Had to just refund myself through their app. Never have had an issue with Amazon. There are loads of other retailers that have better profit margins and better quality items. Don’t even get me started on the 2 times my debit card was compromised using their app. I stopped storing my card info on the Walmart app and the issues stopped. Also, their debit card withdrawal delays are just ridiculous. It took them almost a month to charge my card once. What is this going on with this company?

I feel that, for Walmart, focusing on becoming Amazon is the wrong course of action. They should just focus on what they do well: offering a large selection of everyday grocery items & consumables at low prices, as this is also where Amazon is weakest, in my opinion. Most of the time, grocery products and essentials on Amazon are not only usually more expensive than Walmart, but must also be purchased in enormous quantities (i.e. 10 & 20 packs, etc.) that make them prohibitively expensive. In addition, perishables can’t be shipped for two days in a box from a warehouse, so your only way to get them from Amazon is by paying a $9.95 delivery fee from Whole Foods. For these reasons, I feel Walmart should predominately focus on improving the selection of first party items they have on their site (they’re missing a great deal you can find in-store) and embrace their leadership in grocery, as that is how they can best compete with Amazon and keep them from encroaching further into their primary area of business.

  • @reddragon3163

I disagree, amazon bought whole foods because it wanted to get into fresh food and groceries. They're also trying to get into pharmaceuticals too. Amazon is actively trying to improve its weak points, if they continue like this they'll out compete Walmart in all aspects. Wal mart NEEDS TO clone amazon to give it some competition, this is both great to prevent amazon monopoly and increase consumer choice.

I used to shop at Walmart a lot - but the pandemic changed things. I'll never forget how I was treated as a customer the moment that Walmart had to deal with customers coming into their stores. They closed off entrances. They forced us all to go through this zig zag of entry areas and the employees were not polite; that first visit back during the rollout of the pandemic put me off - I felt like a criminal. Then I went back after about three months and they changed their entrances and I didn't know about their changes and I had no idea how to enter the store and the employees were not respectful that I had no idea how their one way entrance cages worked. I routinely will avoid going to Walmart because of this garbage and this lack of respect of customers. As to ordering online, I used them several times to pick up an order that I had ordered online. This company several years ago treated online sales / pickup in stores as an after thought. They made me walk all the way through their store to go to the back where no one was stationed and I had to wait and wait to be noticed. After several times, I knew this is how they did things and I wasn't going to shop there unless there was an emergency. I am not a loyal Amazon customer, but I can say that 95% of the time I have been satisfied with what has happened with Amazon over the past five years and I continue to go there first. I want home delivery. I don't want to go to a stinking Walmart store where employees don't care. And I refuse to go to pick something up if I have to go all the way to the back of the store. I'm not Anti-Walmart because of anything political or even business oriented. I'm anti-Walmart because of how I have been treated as a PERSON by THEIR EMPLOYEES. I will pay more to go elsewhere. You could not pay me to shop at Walmart.com.

My major annoyance with Walmart is that their Market Place Sellers are taking over a lot of items that used to be sold by Walmart. This complicates shipping, returns and reliability. Marketplace Sellers seem to want to charge me shipping, even though Walmart doesn't. I will stick with Amazon Prime for now, they give me everything I need under their umbrella.

You get cheaper prices from Walmart. Amazon is infected with resellers. Big brands are now entering in ecomerce business so we can buy a lower price from them. They offer prime, refund, free shipping, and all of that.

Amazon is Winning because of their partnership with wholefoods and they work together and with their same day to 2 day delivery. Walmart has Sam's club and yet they're treated as two different stores that do not partner. Walmart could take a look at their play book and make some changes. And with Amazon locker that is convenient too

Amazon owns whole foods. now you can order your packages and have it sent to whole foods that have amazon counter. make a grocery run and pick up packages then come home. oh there’s also a new thing their testing but it’s limited to homes with amazon garage deliveries. basically a driver comes opens your garage, unpack your package and take away all the empty amazon boxes, paddings to the warehouse for recycle. no more filling up recycling bins with amazon boxes. these things is why amazon can’t be caught up they always look into ways to make customers lives easier and happier. i go to Walmart first time in 13 yrs and hell i spent 10 mins getting what i needed and spent 20 mins in line to the only cashier they have. lots of angry customer faces that day. safe to say i’m not going to walmart for another 13 yrs .

Don't forget Walmart semi truck drivers are the safest fleet 18 years in a row. Amazon semi drivers rank one of the lowest in the country.

  • @WestCoastTruckingCEO

    @WestCoastTruckingCEO

Amazon does not employ any truck drivers, they contract everything out as they do not own & operate any trucks. They do own a large amount of trls that are pulled by independent contractors and outside carriers. This was solely done to streamline logistics at their fulfillment centers as it significantly expedites operations when you don't have to wait for the contracted carrier's equipment in order to start the loading process. Walmart owns and operates one of the largest private fleets in the country with each driver being classified as an employee. This allows for a lot more control in logistics but also more responsibility and liability so safety as to be a priority. When an accident occurs for Walmart the company is exposed to litigation whereas if an Amazon contractor is involved in any incident they are legally responsible as the owner of the vehicle, not Amazon. Walmart drivers are also paid well above industry average so a commitment to safety is very much expected

Perception is everything. Shopping should be an experience rather than an inventory dump where we don't find stuff. They made improvement by adding Organic foods in Grocery, Self Checkout, 2 day shipping. Dedicated Electric car chargers in parking, increased surveillance and policing will help. Better customer support, better experience, no trash outside, no homeless people outside, better organized carts outside, more safety will help. Being distinct is difficult as it tries to compete with almost everyone including online, retail, hardware, gardening supplies,....etc. Maybe they don't need to have everything in every store and they offer Speciality Stores.
