How Temu’s Explosive Growth Is Disrupting American E-Commerce | WSJ

Temu, a Chinese-founded e-commerce company, became the most-downloaded app in the U.S. in just over a year. The retailer has flooded social media feeds with curious consumers and even aired ads at back-to-back Super Bowls. In 2023, the discount retail app moved about $17 billion worth of goods between manufacturers and customers across the Pacific.
WSJ breaks down how its continued growth could redefine online retail, just like Amazon’s speedy delivery did.

TEMU is a huge gamble. They charge you but do not send the products you ordered and items arrive BROKEN but they will not sent you replacements, even when they say they did. God help you if you expect them to refund you for missing items or entire packages even when they SAY they issued a refund. I was duped. I spent $300 and got only about $50 worth of the products I purchased. Cheaper to buy from Amazon and actually RECEIVE what I purchased. This morning I spent about an hour on their website Chatting with their Customer Service Bots hoping to recover something. PS THEY TAKE AN AVERAGE OF ABOUT 17 TO 20 DAYS TO DELIEVER IF THEY ACTUALLY DELIVER AT ALL. They are scum. They are rip off artisist.

Posting this comment from Shanghai - it's just really the regular price you get for the same item you spend 3x more in U.S. I really never order things from retailers like Walmart as they simply do not worth that price tag. This is the magic of mass manufacturing that U.S. used to be proud of. Most products are all made in China and follow the same quality - in fact, exported goods have higher standards than some of the domestic-only products because Chinese need trading and foreign consumers. Since I travel between both countries and stayed on both sides for decades, it always shocks me how expensive the U.S. products are compared to how much they should be priced at. I almost always order from Taobao and it's easy to get shipped to U.S. Saves at least 50% more compared to shopping them around at Amazon, Walmart or Costco. Plus, they are really, really high quality goods, especially furnitures.

JD? A long time ago. I lived in China until just last year for a decade. Of all of my friends, one pattern was very clear. Buy everything on Taobao, if you need quality buy on Tmall (tianmao), buy groceries on Pupu (Hema if you’re well off)… JD has been declining for so long. I also have a lot of friends in the countryside, sometimes they still ask me to help them “shave the price” on Pinduoduo. Most Chinese people don’t earn so much, and for them they care about cost. It’s not so different from us, just that both of these numbers look bigger.

Another thing to note is that because China still claims "developing nation" status at various global institutions/organisations, like the World Trade Organisation (WTO), World Health Organisation (WHO), United Postal Union (UPU) etc, China is able to obtain extra benefits awarded to developing nations. By claiming developing nation status with the United Postal Union, the organisation who coordinates postal policies across the globe, China basically gets its international shipping subsidised by the "developed nations". This is why Chinese companies can send goods from China to the US, UK, Europe etc for next to nothing or even free in some cases. But when you try to ship or return something back to China it will be expensive. This developing nation status gives Chinese companies an unfair advantage in global e-commerce trade.

For example, I will never spend 10 dollars to buy a mobile phone. There is a high probability that you will only buy a model. There are no "private" companies in China, there are Chinese Communist Party cadres on every company board. These goods are shipped directly from Chinese warehouses to US consumers with no taxes or tariffs. The CCP massively subsidizes these companies and a lot of the items are made with slave (Uyghurs) labor. The CCP has a strategy to flood our markets (2 million packages a day, est 200 billion a year added to our trade deficit) with subsidized good to destroy our manufacturing. They have done it with electronics, ship building, solar panels, battery's, etc. They are ready to flood world markets with $10,000 EVs. How stupid we were to raise De Minimus from $200 to $800 in 2016. Congress has a bill to fix this. Call your Congressman and demand it gets fixed. Amazon also benefits from the De Minimus loophole, they forgot they are an American company, so they will lobby Congress to leave the loophole.

I was introduced to Emu last week and in 4 days I bought up lots of goods with no shipping cost. Shopping it felt like Walmart but at Goodwill prices. I was shocked and, sure enough, everything was new. I then did some research that said the company doesn't mind going in the red for its launch as it only wants customer recognition foremost. This kind of promotion is costing the company billions but now it has turn some eyes onto it. It has this customer who purchased $87 of goods from it.

with enough MARKETING anything can gain more consumer traffic; the only thing you need to add is a bit LOWER PRICE tag to your items. simple

It's chinese products. Eastern countries has easier access to China products and its cheap and gets the job done. Now the west is getting more access to this products yet they are still complaining. You get the same product for a fraction of the cost. I have bought a lot of chinese products and they are not bad as they say. Heck most of the products you see are made from China, even iPhones is made from China.

What I find most hilarious about Temu is that once you try to checkout they ask for you to add more to your order because there's so much space in the package and doing this will save the environment. Excuse me what? Putting more plastic in a plastic bag will save the environment!? 😂
