How Volcanoes and Rivers of Lava Form Subterranean Caves | Journie Tours

Our landscape is ever-changing. Slowly but surely geologic events mold and shape the world around us. Venture underground through lava river tubes of volcanic rock, and journey to the base of an ancient cinder cone volcano to understand how these formations emerged.

Great video! I’m from the Netherlands, Europe, and when you look for pictures of northwestern Europe by night, you’ll understand why we hardly see anything, beside Jupiter and Venus, the big dipper, Orion and the polestar. But then we stayed at the Marble Lodge, next to Navajo Bridge. And there we finally got to see it: the Milky Way. At first we sat down, to look up, but then we simply laid down on the porch - totally overwhelmed.

Great video! There are lava domes all around Mammoth Lakes too which had much more recent eruptions. It's really fun exploring the different volcanoes around the American West

Up here in MT, we only have a few lava tubes. But I know a caver from down in AZ and he loves lava tubes. Thought I might look up and find more details about them.

When you don't have a pet Icelandic volcano forming all these features in real time ;) Nice human sized lava tube w great features. The ones at Undara in Queensland, Aus, are bigger and may have more bats but less oxygen ;) Great landscapes and nice filming. Thank you. We have splatter or spatter (if you're lazy) cones and tephra and scoria. Love your inclusions. Have fun :) Ps. Tiny bubbles are more like an Aero or Wispa bar. Swiss cheese has much bigger bubbles ;)

I hope your business returns now that vaccines are on the way. In the meantime I love this content on YT. Keep up the great work. BTW dont forget that yeast that lives with lichen [3:34] too. "It appears many, probably the majority, of lichen also live in a symbiotic relationship with an order of basidiomycete yeasts called Cyphobasidiales. The absence of this third partner could explain the difficulties of growing lichen in the laboratory. The yeast cells are responsible for the formation of the characteristic cortex of the lichen thallus, and could also be important for its shape." Wikipedia

Hi, Journie Tours. Your video is fascinating, and beautiful, and educational. Here's a question: Some of the lava tubes you were traversing seemed like they might be about 6 feet high. Can lava tubes form, that are even larger? Can they be 10 or 20 feet high, and resemble caverns? Thanks again.

Volcanoes make for good soil, right? Why's Arizona so sparse with bigger vegetation with all of these past volcanoes?

  • @journietours

It’s all about precipitation here in arizona. Volcanic soil is great for farming and there are ruins in the San Francisco volcanic field that show how people have been living and farming here for thousands of years. However what’s even more important than soil is water and the precipitation levels, even at higher elevations, here in Arizona it is incredible dry. Many parts of arizona are used as fertile farmland but require intense irrigation systems. The modern day canals of Phoenix are built over ancient Hohokam canals used thousands of years ago. At the higher elevations like around Flagstaff you do get slightly more precipitation and as a result have bigger trees like the ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. One of the current video projects we are working on is a more in depth explanation of how elevations affect precipitation and thus vegetation so stay tuned!

😳 I Adore Bats 🦇 ! Without Bats, I’d be one huge Mosquito bite. In South New Jersey, every night I watch low flying Bats, chomping up millions of those tiny wicked vampires (mosquitoes not the Bats) over the bay outside our doors. That’s why I love Bats. But I’d like to know where the Bats “Hang-Out” during the day in our area. The flat Sandy South Jersey shore, isn’t known for caves. Where else do Bats exist I wonder.

10:42 "solid pieces of lava". Lava is molten rock. Or in other words, non-solid rock. I don't think it's possible to have a non-solid solid :p
