Herman's Cave - Superstition Wilderness
Herman's Cave - Superstition Wilderness
Here's a video of a recent backpacking trip to Herman's Cave in the Superstition Wilderness. Like all hikes in the Superstitions, this one was rugged and wild.

That whole canyon is gorgeous.
My two favorite AZ hikers/youtubers! Thanks for bringing the rest of us along.
I moved out of AZ 23 years ago; I visit occasionally and hiked in the Superstitions last fall. It is the idea that I could have access to that magnificent scenery that has me thinking of moving back. It is nothing short of magical out there and I know of no place like it. The scenery and the stories, what a combination. Nice video, thanks for posting. Hope your head healed up nicely.

The Superstitions are my happy place. One of, if not the, closest wildernesses to my house. Looking forward to cooler weather so I can get back out there. And that was my friend who ran into the cactus. Luckily, he's got a hard head, so he's fine.
👍👍!
Great videos. I am from Phoenix Arizona. I didn’t even know we had these places. I appreciate you taking us on on the journey. Great work.

Very cool. Thanks for making the video. I'll do the Fremont Saddle next weekend. Maybe that gnarly stuff next year.
Another awesome video Jerry! Thanks😊
Cool very old cave. Well done. Thanks
All I can say is WOW!
I can absolutely relate to all the upsides and downs. Thank you for bringing this video to us and for being able to enjoy the journey along the way. As someone who was truly into hiking, adventures, and the outdoors, I somehow lost this by living in the city. Thank you for creating this video and sharing it with us. All the best and wish you good luck on your journeys.
Beautiful!!!! So jealous you live in a spot so close to these amazing places.

Your channel is an absolute delight. The quality of the video, for the beauty of the landscapes, is outstanding. Editing, music are fantastic. And you, Tina and your various hike companions have a nice chemistry, understated humour and charisma going on - a friendly, fun watch. Am thoroughly enjoying exploring your back "catalogue" - cheers from Scotland

I love the Superstitions... Endless areas to explore... I finally got around to doing Peralta canyon this season it was awesome... The Flat Iron is a go to when I'm in the region!
Now thats my kind of overnight hike. ( packing a couple three beers ). Now i want to hit the supers . Thanks
two local legends. dope❤
Wow, perfect timing for me on this video. I am currently planning a few day backpack through that area (heading out towards Charlebois Spring) and didn't know about this cave. I'll definitely have to check that out!

It's definitely worth it. Personally I didn't like Charlebois that much. Haven't been there since the fire though. And I need to see if I can find that map they talk about right around there......
Oh nice! We did this as a day hike this past Saturday. I was also too nervous to jump to that ledge.

Another great adventure! I’ve had limited time in The Sups but I can tell you from personal experience your arms are too short to box with a cactus. Ouch!

@@JerryArizona Supes are special right within h all the water but it’s too crowded right now. Spending more time in the seven springs area this winter exploring that area. Had a big kitty show up into camp one night, definitely different. some hidden treasures on those trials and good area for day hiking. I am ready to get back into the pines!
Just remembered that I had your beer can still in my car today from that start, so thanks for the reminder to throw it out lol

I believe its called Florence Nightingale effect. Back story to that is lady in question pioneered modern nursing care. This was adopted so many times in so many books, movies and comics. In more recent years a character called Dr. Harley Quinzel (Harleen Quinn aka Joker's girlfriend in Batman comics).
I did this about a week after but hiked through to the other side of upper la barge canyon and camped up there. Great trail, and all the water was amazing. The area I was at was burned over, along with being between a couple creeks leading into la barge left me soaked in condensation. Also, that climb up Dutchmen’s to whiskey springs felt a lot more strenuous than I think it should have.
@JerryArizona

The Supes always seem to be more strenuous than I think they should be. Rugged country, for sure. It's always hard to explain that to someone who hasn't hiked out there before.
Lived in Phoenix in the mid seventies and hiked in the 4 peaks area. Came upon a series of steep east/west ridges. The south facing sides were cactus/scrub but as soon as you topped out you descended into a pine forest with a little rill at the bottom and then right back into the cactus as you climbed the other side. The contrast of environments was stark. Not sure of the elevation guessing maybe 2K feet below the peaks on the western slope.

Jerry again thanks for your videos, love following along. Also your Helinox chair how do you like it? I’ve been debating, get it don’t get. Kind of pricey so holding off on purchasing. Strangest I think would be Valley of Dreams in New Mexico. Went there once years ago and I can't put my finger on it, but it was...spooky, I guess it the best word. Like I didn't want to spend the night out there solo and didn't. Went back a few years later and it was like the entire landscape (like the roads) were all changed around. To the point where I had GPS tracks from the previous trip saved and the roads just weren't there. I still went, but I was glad it was day time and was relieved when it was time to leave. Not sure what's going on out there.

Strange indeed. Sounds similar to other stories I've heard about entering random portals of another space/time. Perhaps a parallel dimension? I've experi3nced something spooky in a island in Miami where it felt time stood still in a sense. The water stopped waving, trees had no breeze and time just stood still. The person next to me noticed it too. We were low key freaked out and decided it was time to go. Haha Well thanks for sharing. Def will go to the badlands when I go back to NM. NM has plenty special places.

check that haha -- I went and did it this past Saturday, and even went out on the ledge ;) and then tried to climb Miner's Needle on the way back to no avail as I had no gear lol
Thanks for sharing. On another subject - did you read the Washington Post article: Helicopter rescues Utah hikers after 24 hours in freezing canyon -? I thought about you Jerry and your buds... on past hikes here... but in January? Not sure if you heard of this rescue. Stay safe and all good wishes.

I saw that. Subway in winter? No thanks. Too many people go into that thing (especially top down) unprepared. Specifically made two separate videos about it to try to help people prepare for what they're getting themselves into. If you have canyoneering experience, it's incredible. If you go in expecting a hike, you're probably getting more adventure than you bargained for. And swimming in the winter? No thank you. Wait....I just did that with Nick in the Supes a couple weeks ago....Guess I can't judge.
Huge fan of your channel. You are literally living my dream haha. Looking to move to Arizona in the next fe years. Just had 1 question - do you worry much about snakes when you are scrambling off trail like that?

Hey good hike. How about doing a short video on your opinions of the best Mexican restaurants in your range. Went to Tucson recently and went to what some claimed was the best Mexican restaurant in AZ. We were disappointed to say the least. Would love to hear from those that eat all over AZ and Utah.

I'm so bad at this, honestly. When we're in town we've been pretty disappointed and usually stick to....Macayos. Yeah. I said it. We have places we like, but they're usually out of town and we hit them during our adventures. Escobar's in Kanab and El Patio outside Camp Verde are favorites. (Especially El Patio.) If you want fancy, you go for Mariposa or Elote in Sedona.
I’m diggin’ the Moonjuice and Jerry show. 😄 Random technical camera question: Why does the shot at 7:18 look so different than the rest? Looks like it was shot with a different lens or something with a super shallow depth of field. (?) 🤔

I've been experimenting with the 'cinematic' setting on my new iphone. Lighter than carrying around my Canon for those shots. But I'm not a huge fan on some wobbling effects and the focus sometimes just does what it wants. Maybe I'll use it for macro in technical canyons.
