From the title, I thought that the lava tube just came into existence after an eruption. Actually the lava tube just opened to the public (with no relation to any eruption.)

I surveyed a 23 mile long lave tube on mt shasta in Calif. It was a summer long project...very spectacular. Lots of Pleistocene Ice in the caves, frozen waterfalls underground and in places the lava tube chanbers ould be 300 ft long and 40 ft tall....woo hoo...! ( but no pavement, handrails or lights...these are dangerous tubes, full of rockfalls and deep holes that can suddeny give way under you...not for tourists or weekend warriors.... and no place for guns or spray paint.

I wish I had brought a spare flashlight because if my battery ran out, I'd have been 100% blind because it is DARK in there. So my advice, BRING TWO FLASHLIGHTS and DO NOT rely on the light from your phone.

Oh yea, they can get huge. Like over 15 feet across easily. My Mother went diving with my Dad MANY years ago in Hawaii and decided to do a swim thru a massive ancient lava tube under water. It was 100 yards long...and you could swim out the other end. Well, partway thru my Mother got horrible vertigo because the native fish were swimming thru the tubes....upside down and sideways. She experienced a panic attacked, went thru 2 hours of air in minuets, and started clawing insanely at the walls instinctually trying to figure out “up”. My Dad (military training) restrained her and hurriedly took her out the shortest way possible. My Mother apparently had undiagnosed claustrophobia. While she would go diving again....she NEVER entered underwater caves or enclosed spaces underwater. That was a big NOPE for her. Remember those boys trapped in that cave in Thailand? My Mom agreed 100% that it was a good idea those boys were tranquillized when evacuated. Apparently during early rescue some rescuers got trapped due to waters suddenly raising unexpectedly....and panicked while being evacuated underwater due to natural claustrophobia. This earlier near tragic event is what led them to decide to have the boys sleep very soundly when being pulled out. Even in high traffic areas.........respect and use common sense in caves!

My Great Grandfather worked in the Coal Mines in Virginia before WW2. He was so sick off the conditions he took his entire family back to Eastern Europe and used the money earned to buy a farm. He even left his his newborn baby girl (my Grandma, Mother’s side), back with him. She did not do well on that trip apparently 🤢. My Great Grandfather later died from the thing he feared most...the black lung disease. But when Hitler invaded Cheklosavacia (damn, can never spell it right), my Grandma had to flee because everyone knew she was technically American. Ironically, Grandma (only 14) had to go to Germany and she got on the last boat from Germany to the USA. She, even in her old age, always spoke of coal mines as though they were horrible places. But my ears always perk up when mines....and mining disasters occur. The series “Disasters of the Century”, had some very OLD forgotten disasters on there. Being underground is no joke. It’s deadly. But oddly I like tight spaces and have no natural real fear. I think it’s the autism 🤷‍♀️.
