I also hear vampire bat colonies are known to share blood meals with bats that weren't as lucky to get a meal, but there's also a system in place where if an individual bat tries to "cheat" by never reciprocating if another bat needs a meal, they no longer will obtain blood meals from other bats. I also recall reading that interestingly, vampire bats are relatively uninterested in human blood, and typically prefer the blood of ungulates such as horses, donkeys, etc.

That definitely explain why in all media or stories the vampires can jump in the air and do stuff like that because these little guys can jump really high and the fact that they prefer climbing and walking from flying or how they can feed on people at night unnoticed or how they get fixated on a victim. Honest whoever observed these little guys and created that whole mythology was a genius. (because before folk tales on vampires were different depending on the country and since these guys live in America it is understandable

It's the other way round, first came the mythology, then they discovered these bats in central and south America, making it part of the already existing mythology, that originally was about black cats, wolves and corpses.

Mythology about vampires doesn't always involve jumping and climbing in Europe or Japan especially before the give and take with America from 15th century onward. Myths about vampires exist all over the place since antiquity, not all of them had access to America and vampire bats. My comment was about vampires in media like literature which became popular mainly by 19th century onward. By that time these guys were known and their features were added to the stories of modern literature too. Which explains why Dracula climbs down like a lizard in Bram Stoker's novel while modern day vampires picture them not only climbing but also jumping around. And of course modern day cartoons and anime etc joined the chat

Why did they have to try and make this scary? Sure, bats can transmit rabies, but only .5% of them are carriers; the odds of transmission are pretty darn low, even with vampire bats. They don't target people, preferring larger mammals like cattle, pigs and horses, make a tiny little cut the animal doesn't even feel, and they only drink a few tablespoons' worth. A few tablespoons of blood from something the size of a COW! Plus, they look after one another; if a member of the colony is weak and can't fly out to feed, the others will groom it, and each regurgitate a little bit of food for it, so it can have a full belly. They're kinda sweet, really.

After watching a few videos on bats, never realized there were so many different species of them. Fruit bats are my fave. ❤

Bats aren't dangerous, they barely attack humans, like sharks, they get "misunderstood" but they're really lovely and are the most "human" animal on heart and are harmless to humans, they carry rabies sure but it's very rare to take them, there are only one or two cases a year, even dogs are more danderous

The question are, Did the horse become a vampire too?

If it makes you feel better they have no interest in biting humans, numb the site, and because they are so tiny they only need two teaspoons of blood. Also, if you are really unlucky and get bitten there is a really small chance that you can get rabies (less than 1%). They also are extremely family oriented and are known to adopt orphaned baby bats whether or not they are related to them. Or feed sick members of their colony. Ironically, they are morally one of the best predators around. They mildly inconvenience their hosts (usually livestock), and go home to feed orphans and the elderly. It’s not their fault that they’re kinda creepy looking.

Is it me or do I find these things to be the cutest animals 🦇🥰

It sounds scary, yet I find this utterly fascinating. It's so unreal learning of a bat that actually drinks blood, but also finds a way to do so undetected biologically. Utterly astonishing. Though, I can admit it does have it's downfalls.

Video summary: cute boi has a sippy sippy while narrator and editing crew fail to make him look scary

They also form close friendships where if one bat can't find blood one night, his buddy shares like a bird feeding its chick

Those are the ones that carry the most viruses such as Ebola and Rabies. Which are the most deadliest diseases in the world. Without a vaccine, there is a 99% chance that your will die with rabies. Which means, if you experience rabies symptoms, your dead 💀 🦠

I think this segment was part of a longer piece about bats from South America. Searching the net I did find this: "As a nectar feeder, the lesser long-nosed bat follows the trail of cactus blooms between Mexico and the U.S. One of the plants it also plays a major role in pollinating is agave, which gives us tequila." BUT the videos all came back to this mistitled bit.

Someday, maybe I'll be lucky enough to feed a vampire bat.

Bats are amazing and people are usually scared of them but if anything they're scared of others and its just trying to survive its like the same way humans eat animals. Bats just usually feed off of horses and fruit. (depends what kind of bat) And they can eat over 2k+ Mosquitos!! THANK YOU BATS!! 😍😻

Bats are amazing animals. Their variety and evolution is just fascinating.
