Thanks for the advice. I like the idea of separate resumes. Sometimes employers seem to want more and other times less. This is a good way to break things up.

That’s a very good point! Federal and government jobs might be jobs where you actually upload both resumes: one for HR/the recruiter (this would be your longer, master resume) and one for the hiring manager (this would be your shorter, tailored resume).

Thanks Abby! Very often I stumble with choosing a right approach to each job related descriptions. Could you please tell us if providing a job description from the past job under each job is not acceptable? If not, then how should we approach the bullet points? Is it a summary of what we did at the job on a daily basis (keeping in mind tailoring it to the vacancy) and where/how to list achievements at that job? Achievements are different and I have a hard time incorporating them into the resume. Thanks a lot!!

Great question! So, on a TAILORED resume, it is not a good idea to include the job description. This would be better for a MASTER resume (check out this video on master resumes her: kzread.info/dash/bejne/g62pqrCQhLmrn7g.html) On your tailored resume, only show the most relevant information for the job you are applying to. I recommend the following process to make that decision: 1. copy and paste the job posting into a word document or google sheet. 2. using the highlighter function, highlight keywords and phrases that seem important for doing the job successfully 3. compare your experience to what you've highlighted. If you have any overlapping areas of experience/expertise/knowledge/skills/abilities, keep those in your "tailored" version. You'll be able to narrow down the amount of information included in your resume over time. I recommend staying away from big chunks of text. Bullets are the easiest way for someone to quickly read through your experience. If you're wanting to list your achievements, list each achievement as an individual bullet at the top before you list your other bullets. I hope this helps!

Check out one of my recent videos on how ChatGPT can help with this sort of thing! I'm not sure if you mean write an email to a hiring manager before you apply to a job or after you've interviewed, but this playlist is a good place to start: kzread.info/head/PLzWOz8R0BVKlpCNS8HkEq_6WHS71yaESG

Found this very helpful. I always thought it was odd to write education dates because you're giving your age away. Age-ism can happen if you're both very young or older. My resume is 3 pages because I listed and described each task I am responsible to do. I had thought it was best to be thorough. Would you consider doing a video on writing a statement of diversity? Seems to be getting more common in the job market. Even if a job posting says it's optional to write a diversity statement, should you always write one?

Absolutely! Writing education dates can CERTAINLY lead to ageism! What industry are you primarily looking to apply to? Diversity statements tend to be common for education/academic jobs,, and I can certainly work on putting together a video on this topic! I would recommend writing a statement if it's mentioned in the job posting. It's something the hiring team is likely looking for, and while they can't make any hiring decisions based on if you submitted one or not, not submitting one could reduce your rank in the candidate pool!

@@LifeWorkBalance Thanks for the reply! I am in the higher education field; every new job posting is asking for an optional diversity statement with no indication of length. I wanted to write something I could personally relate to so I went down the socioeconomic route and briefly wrote about financial struggles as a student and it's important to have students from various financial backgrounds have the opportunity to have equal education.

@@Rachel-jq6xy Ahh yes, that makes sense to me! It sounds like you took a pretty good first try at it - honestly, I've never had to write one! I will do some research on this topic and try to get a video posted for you soon :)

For federal jobs, should we even care how a resume scores when running it through a scoring system? Your sample resume would not score high through these systems because the job histories don't include hard numbers and accomplishments but rather just duties. This contradicts every "professional" resume service advice that's charging tons of money for.
