I was taught to carve using a pocket knife at a small but well-known . high school in Mississippi. My teacher was Mr. George Berry. I'm retired now but never lost interest in carving, watching your Videos are a blessing. My skills are returning and I really enjoyed the ball in a cage, which I just finished. If you could would you do a Chain please. I couldn't locate a video of it in your library. You are truly a wonderful craftsman. Thank you for what you do.

I began watching your videos last year and commented here about how I'd like to start carving. Well, I did and then I got a tool set. This summer, I made a small canoe and a spoon! Thank you for your videos (even though you didn't make videos for the things I made, just thanks for the inspiration)!

Mr. Splinters...did you feel the heavens open up and the angels singing this morning??? Thank you!!! For a fun sister's challenge we were all given a chunk of balsa wood and told to "create" something. God did not bless me with the creative gene. Thank goodness I found your videos. I have been puttering away at this ball in the box for three days now and today the ball came free! I am elated!!! I need to do a bit of finish work but it's looking good. I only had a sharpie to work with so it was tedious but I am happy-happy-happy! Thanks again!!!!!

My two favorite carving knives that I use is the Richard Butz woodcarving knife that woodcraft sells. They have stores around the USA and they sell for around $18- (around 5- more to sharpen) They are well made, strong blade and holds an edge. Plus Richard Butzs is a great carver who had a show on public Tv station and wrote a bunch of books. My other favorite knife is a Helvie knife. The blades come razor sharp and the blade is thinner (they have a website-just google it). Safe carving!

Hi-I'm using a Richard Butz knife that wood craft stores sell. I believe they sell for around $17- and for around $4- wood craft will sharpen for you. I also think when you buy the knife they include sharpening instructions. I also use Helvie carving knifes. They come already razor sharp. They vary in price 35- and up. Many carving stores sell the Helvie knives. Here's some carving stores: Little shavers, woodcraft, the wood craft shop, wood carving supply and chipping away. Safe carving-Joe

And last but not least I like Flex cut carving knives. They are made in Pennslyvania, reasonably priced and come razor sharp. If they need to be resharpened and you have trouble doing that, you can send back to the company and they will do for you. Also you can do the same for Helvie knives. Hope this info helps - Happy holidays and safe carving - Joe PS Feel free to email me with more ?s

With re: to my last "carving" I found I had to add and glue things like arms, hat and backpack (based roughfly on french foriegn leigion) So i pressume its not true carving (as in using "one piece of wood" I suppose it would be classed as model making. Oh well still great fun though. Next one i do will be one piece of wood, I tend to work with whatever piece of wood "that comes along" and work to it accordingly I find that a challenge in itself ! Save carving Joe!!!!!!

Hi Again - No problem if you missed the knife description. I use a carving knife with a blade length of around 1.5-inches long. They range from $15- to $35- It depend on the company that makes them. I really like the Richard butz carving knife sold through woodcraft but needs to be sharpened. They will sharpen for aprox. $5- . I also like Helvie knifes. They cost aprox $35- because they have a fancier look to them. They come razor sharp!!
