    The ESRB decided that loot boxes are not gambling, but the reason has nothing to do with the tokens used to buy the boxes not being real money. They say since you always get SOMETHING for your money, it's not gambling, even if what you get is random. They say it's analogous to buying packs of cards for a trading card game. Now I'd argue that those packs of cards are "gambling-lite" for children. But I think the ESRB is under pressure from the AAA game studios to say there is no gambling in the games, otherwise they would be rated Adults Only and therefore sell very badly. kotaku.com/esrb-says-it-doesnt-see-loot-boxes-as-gambling-1819363091

    I mean just because they "give you something" doesn't mean they don't classify as gambling. Let's just say I want a Legendary Winston skin so I spend $100 to try and get it.And if I don't then I just wasted my money.I don't give a shit that "I got something".

    Without a doubt those trading card packs are gambling. It's as simple as can be: You buy a pack for $5, you can either get something worth 10c or $50, it's the luck of the draw and 100% gambling. I'm personally not against gambling at all, but i think it's important to call this what it is.. Unregulated gambling for children.

    No it's actually worse than gambling. The skins you get aren't worth any real money, so you could blow a hundred bucks to get one thing but never have the chance to get that money back. That's how gambling hooks you. You think you could get a whole lot of money back, and what you're spending is just an investment to get to the jackpot. But this time there is no jackpot. Just a chance to get a cosmetic item that isn't worth anything.

    Literally all we need is for ow to copy paladins for once. Reward credits every match (ex. +100 for playing and staying all the way through and/or +25 for backfill, +100 for a win, +50 for a loss. Once you level up you get 250 credits. If you want to speed up this process THEN you pay actual money. Now you can grind for whatever you want without gambling for it.

    In some games lootboxes are okay. in others it's a money-grabbing sin. In Overwatch you can play for your lootboxes and they add up very fast if you play games out a lot, which is what the game wants you to do. You can also pay for them. You have no guarentee you'll get what you want, but more often than not the "disenchant" factor (Auto turns stuff you already have into gold which can be used on other items) makes up for it. I dislike the ratio on legendary skins... But at least it gives you something. Lootboxes will always be "useful" to cosmetic players and never required. There are so many games out there that shell out money to progress, money to gain power through actual gambling. There's a chance what you find will be useless and unusable at all. It really depends on the value... which then asks how valuable is the game to you to be worth playing the slots. I think the best way to tell which one is the sinful one is if the game is locking power behind the box AND insisting you need to pay for it, but, every once a month or two, they'll give their players one... Just to try and lure them into the slot game. If you can grind for it (and the grind isn't super terrible, like, 10 hours of play for a roll), it helps. Usually not the case though unless it's purely cosmetic.

    I mean the primary definition of gambling is "play games of chance for money," you're not getting any monetary return for purchasing loot boxes, so how is it gambling?

  • @chinogambino9375

    @chinogambino9375

    6 жыл бұрын

    The primary definition is bullshit then because things are worth money because people want them. Its like saying Pachinko is not gambling because you win steel balls instead of money, its not the operators fault the players want to sell back the balls for money and prizes but they are happy to oblige. I don't see crystal or tokens any differently offered by loot box the operators. If you are dropping money on the chance of winning something its worth money. The monetary value is also not why gambling is regulated, its done out of public health concern because its an impulsive, seductive and addictive activity that most of the public is more vulnerable to than they realize.

  • @samvise7404

    @samvise7404

    6 жыл бұрын

    Chino Gambino Why would a game like pachinko not be gambling when the reward is a form of currency within the casino? Or slot machines, you get tokens, which are a form of currency that the casino established to trade for another, more viable form of currency. Also, the only game I can think of that has any kind of real gambling is Counter Strike, because their rewards have real monetary value and can be traded with others. In most games you have a choice, but them or dont, you can still get them for free at some point. I've never spent money on a video game besides the initial purchase or a season pass or something. In overwatch, you can buy lootboxes, but you can also earn them by leveling up and playing the game, so why should that be regulated? That's just stupid to try and regulate what people can do with their own money.

  • @eonoflegend2985

    I'm drawn on this issue. On one end it is predatory and ruins large portions of the gaming industry. On the other, I don't know how I feel about government regulating what can be considered art. Maybe preventing it for kids would be wise. If it ruins a game for you, don't play it or pay for it and the market should change. There are plenty of awesome indie games on steam and other market places that don't have loot boxes and it seems many of the main games have many other issues which could also be fixed this way. 1 reason its not considered gambling in other countries is because you always get something, even if its a duplicate of the same crappy item. There is also other issues with digital items being considered material possession. If we do ban it, then I would like to see consistency in laws. For example, Magic the Gathering and other card games should not be allowed to offer randomized packs of cards. You should always just be able to pick the card you want and buy it without any form of mystery box offered. McDonalds shouldn't randomize the toy you get with a happy meal or be able to do their Monopoly contest, and to my understanding some toys have even done the mystery box thing for kids, leading them to buy multiples until they have a full set. I hate loot boxes myself, so I just don't buy games which offer them. I know it's allot of games now and I end up playing allot of retro stuff when I do game, but I don't know if I think they should be banned, at least without everything else that is similar being banned or barred for children. I'm not anti or pro regulation on markets, I just think there is a balance, and that only things necessary for everyday life or things without alternatives warrant regulation. Games are not a necessity and yet there is a choice in games to play which don't offer loot boxes. It's true that it appeals to those who are susceptible to gambling addiction, but so do many other dopamine traps. At some point as a consumer we have to take responsibility for our actions. Maybe the indie designers who aren't trying to take advantage of their consumers deserve some more business. Designers will just find other ways around it. Don't want to buy a randomized box? Buy a run at this hard mini-game which offers randomized loot, You just paid for the mini-game (with hopes of getting specific loot), no longer a loot-box. And what about games with random generated stats on weapons? If that is the standard, is buying a gauntlet or gun, but having the stats randomized still considered loot boxes, or is it just a micro-transaction?

  • @awkwardcultism
    @awkwardcultism6 жыл бұрын

    You are buying something. The difference between a purchase and gambling is that you have a chance of getting your money back. If there is no chance of that happening, ever, you can't call that gambling. If a slot machine doesn't spit out any money, just spins the reels, is it gambling? Japan doesn't think so, they have hundreds of arcade machines for children that do that called medal games.
